Buffalo Bill State Park near Cody, WY
Loved this park. Near enough to Cody that we could run in to shop or lunch at Irma's. Peaceful. the weather was great. Unfortunately, far enough fro Yellowstone t be a long drive. Still, I want to go back. It had boat ramps, hiking trails, volunteer hosts. It was pet-friendly.
Lousy TMobile - as usual in the west. Iffy phone service and no voicemail.

We stayed at Buffalo Bill State Park over Memorial Day Weekend while visiting Yellowstone National Park. We stayed at the North Fork Campground. We got a lot of rain one night and it washed big boulders down on the road.

Buffalo Bill Dam When completed in 1910, Buffalo Bill Dam stood as an engineering marvel, one of the first concrete arch dams built in the United States. At 325 feet high, it also was the highest dam in the world (surpassing New York’s Croton Dam). The dam was part of the Shoshone Project, which comprised a system of tunnels, canals, diversion dams, and Buffalo Bill Reservoir. Today, the project irrigates more than 93,000 acres, where principal crops are beans, alfalfa, oats, barley, and sugar beets.

Buffalo Bill Dam - Cody, Wyoming - Historical Analysis & Facts - 1910
Buffalo Bill Dam is a concrete arch-gravity dam on the Shoshone River in the U.S. state of Wyoming. It is named after the famous Wild West figure William Buffalo Bill Cody, who founded the nearby town of Cody and owned much of the land now covered by the reservoir formed by its construction. The dam is part of the Shoshone Project, successor to several visionary schemes promoted by Cody to irrigate the Bighorn Basin and turn it from a semi-arid sagebrush-covered plain to productive agricultural land. Known at the time of its construction as Shoshone Dam, it was renamed in 1946 to honor Cody. The 325 feet (99 m) high structure was designed by engineer Daniel Webster Cole and built between 1905 and 1910. At the time of its completion it was the tallest dam in the world. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971 and named a National Civil Engineering Landmark in 1973. The land around the reservoir is maintained as Buffalo Bill State Park.

Buffalo Bill State Park
Wyoming State Parks, Historic Sites and Trails is celebrating it's 75th Anniversary. Buffalo Bill State park and its accompanying reservoir were named for legendary showman William F. Buffalo Bill Cody, who spent many years guiding and sponsoring hunting parties in the area. When it was built in 1905, the dam was the highest in the world at 325 feet. In the 1990's, the crest of the dam was raised an additional 25 feet, resulting in the inundation of existing park areas. New park facilities make this a great stopover for visitors on their way to and from Yellowstone National Park and as a base for visiting the Buffalo Bill Historical Center and other attractions in nearby Cody. Buffalo Bill State Park is six miles west of Cody, WY, on U.S. 16-20-14 (Yellowstone Hwy.) A visitor center at the Buffalo Bill Dam is open daily May 1-September 30. Hours in May and September are 8am to 6pm Monday-Friday and 9am to 5pm Saturday-Sunday. Hours in June, July and August are 8am to 7pm Monday-Friday, and 9am to 5pm Saturday-Sunday. Visitors may stroll to the top of the dam, view exhibits and a short movie in the visitor center, or rent a self-guided audio tour. For more information, log onto wyoparks.org.

The Shoshone River is a 100-mile (160 km) long river in northern Wyoming in the United States. Its headwaters are in the Absaroka Range in Shoshone National Forest. It ends when it runs into the Big Horn River near Lovell, Wyoming. Cities it runs near or through are Cody, Powell, Byron, and Lovell. Near Cody, it runs through a volcanically active region of fumaroles known as Colter's Hell.[3] This contributed to the river being named on old maps of Wyoming as the Stinking Water River.
The current name was established in 1901 due to popular demand.[2]
Buffalo Bill Dam on the Shoshone River
West of Cody the river is impounded in Shoshone Canyon by the Buffalo Bill Dam, created as part of the Shoshone project; one of the nation's first water conservation projects. A number of hot springs along the Shoshone were drowned by the reservoir.[3] Upstream of Buffalo Bill Reservoir the Shoshone splits into the North Fork, which follows a long canyon down from the Absaroka Mountains to the vicinity of the east entrance of Yellowstone National Park, and the South Fork, which originates at the southern end of the Absarokas.
