North Tyneside Has Lost Its Way (desktop version)
North Tyneside campaigners oppose 'mega-estate' housing plan for Murton.
Objections have been raised against the draft North Tyneside Council Local Plan, which could allow for 3,000 houses to be built at Murton Gap.

Council are building on what attracts people to live in this area - fields, bridal ways, paths, generally just the joy of having open space to walk and relax. This can only have an impact on our quality of life and property prices, making houses built in 1923 look like the poor relations. What once was an opportunity to live on an established estate surrounded by open fields will now be an enclosed space with narrow streets liable to flooding. The sprawl of houses is encroaching on individual communities so that there is no differentiation between Monkseaton, West Monkseaton and Wellfield. The houses currently being built opposite Wellfield, West Park, have a West Monkseaton address, how far can the 'kudos' of living in Monkseaton be stretched to line the pockets of developers, Monkseaton Village being ruined years ago. Within this proposed plan Murton Village will no longer be a small quiet village, surrounded by fields. I can only imagine how upsetting this must be for the residents who chose to live in a village and what impact this will have on their community and local businesses, the riding school especially. Although the proposed plan is for houses to be built up to the Metro lines from Rake Lane Hospital it is only a matter of time before it will continue on to Earsdon, linking North Shields, New York, Monkseaton, West Monkseaton, Murton Village, Shiremoor, Wellfield and Earsdon, creating an urban sprawl with no community identity. The proposed new road to Earsdon will enable this to happen. Houses on Wellfield which currently back onto open fields will face the prospect of having a major road at the end of their back garden shortly followed by houses. Surely even 'our' council can appreciate this is not acceptable on several levels- loss of open views, increased pollution (noise and air), quality of life diminished, increased traffic.
Wellfield suffers badly with flooding however this has only been the case in recent years.The result of building work, significantly Earsdon View and Northumberland Park has meant there is nowhere for rain water to drain therefore it runs towards Wellfield. I appreciate that work has been carried out on Shiremoor playing field however Wellfield playing field is still flooded. I am fearful of saying this as it may signal a green light from another field to be built on. The small band of land we have been left with cannot deal with heavy rain fall which is only going to get worse with the global warming situation. More houses will need more amenities, one of which being schools, how will our local schools take the influx of children.
North Tyneside is full up. Please, please think very carefully about building up our area into a massive traffic jammed, concrete, overpopulated, ugly town. Transport links, infrastructure, schools and medical services just simply cannot cope. Waiting times at GP surgeries and also at hospitals are not coping now. How will they manage with another 3000 households.
This area needs another Cramlington New Town built on a completely new site. Out of this coastal area, with new road links and a new centre. There is land west and north of Cramlington to create this. The only new housing in North Tyneside should be on existing brown sites. Quality of life is so important. We need green spaces and views to catch the breath. Places to play. Places to relax. Don't let then disappear. North Tyneside Council should concentrate on improving the area as it stands. They can't even manage a grand plan for the seafront - Save Our Green Spaces.
