San Diego Air & Space Museum (SDASM, formerly the San Diego Aerospace Museum) is an aviation and space exploration museum in San Diego, California, United States. The museum is located in Balboa Park and is housed in the former Ford Building, which is listed on the US National Register of Historic Places.[5] SDASM was established by articles of incorporation on October 12, 1961 and opened to the public on February 15, 1963.[1]

The museum was first opened to the public on February 15, 1963 in the Food and Beverage Building, which had been built in 1915 for the Panama–California Exposition.[10] In 1965 the museum was moved to the larger Electrical Building.
On February 22, 1978 the Electrical Building and the Museum were destroyed in an arson fire.[11][12] Several one-of-a-kind aircraft were destroyed, including the Beecraft Wee Bee, the world's lightest aircraft, and her sister craft the Queen Bee. A reproduction of the Spirit of St. Louis, built in 1967 by some of the same people who built the original, was also destroyed, along with more than 50 other aircraft, an extensive collection of artifacts and archives, and the International Aerospace Hall of Fame.[12][13] Owen Clarke, the museum's executive director, said of the $4 million in losses, This is unbelievably tragic. When you've spent that length of time acquiring history, building something up to where it had international prestige, then see it all disappear in a couple of hours, what else can it be?[14]

USS Fort Worth Departs San Diego for Deployment
On Nov. 17, the U.S. Navy deployed its third Littoral Combat Ship (LCS), USS Fort Worth, on a 16-month journey to Southeast Asia. While deployed, the ship will visit ports, collaborate with international navies and expand LCS capabilities. USS Fort Worth, which has traveled more than 40,000 nautical miles already, is the second ship built by the Lockheed Martin-led industry team. The ship was delivered to the Navy in 2012, two months ahead of schedule.

SDASM promotes itself as one of the largest aviation museums in the nation, containing the third-largest collection of archives and library. SDASM has two restoration facilities, one on site, and the other located at Gillespie Field. The Gillespie Field Annex is open to the public with numerous aircraft on display outdoors, a Convair SM-65 Atlas ICBM, museum model shop, and a restoration shop. The museum's library contains an extensive collection of aircraft books and historic photographs of aircraft and aircraft manufacturing.

Reliving Operation Frequent Wind Aboard the USS Midway Museum
In 1975, during the Fall of Saigon, the USS Midway played a heroic role, rescuing thousands of fleeing Vietnamese men, women, and children. The flight deck was full of out-of-gas helicopters. But dozens of helicopters filled with frightened refugees were inbound with no place to land on Midway’s chaotic, dangerous flight deck. The only thing to do was clear the flight deck, no matter the cost.
And so the order was given……
Midway Members had the unique opportunity to relive Operation Frequent Wind on July 11, 2019! They heard personal accounts of the amazing historic event from Admiral Larry Chambers, former commanding officer of the USS Midway; Vern Jumper, Midway’s steadfast Air Boss; and Stephanie Dinh, then a bewildered rescued child.

USS Midway Museum
USS Midway (CV-41) in Arctic Tests - March 1946
USS Midway, first of a three-ship class of 45,000-ton large aircraft carriers, was built at Newport News, Virginia, and commissioned in September 1945. Following shakedown, she began eight years' service with the Atlantic Fleet. In March 1946, Midway made an cruise to Arctic waters for experimental cold weather operations. The following year, her flight deck was the site of a at-sea test launching of an ex-German V-2 ballistic missile. Also in 1947, the carrier undertook the first of several Sixth Fleet tours in the Mediterranean sea. She also periodically deployed to North Atlantic waters, including participation in the NATO Operation Mainbrace in 1952. In October of that year, she was reclassified an attack aircraft carrier, changing her hull number from CVB-41 to CVA-41
Late in 1954, Midway left the Atlantic, steaming past the Cape of Good Hope to join the Seventh Fleet in the Far East. In September 1955, following this cruise, she entered the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard for the first of her two major modernizations. Recommissioned two years later, as the work neared completion, Midway now had an angled flight deck, enclosed bow, three steam catapults and other features that enabled her to better operate high-performance aircraft. She conducted a Seventh Fleet deployment in 1958 and was a regular visitor to Asiatic waters during the next eight years. Her 1965 Far Eastern tour included active participation in the then-expanding Vietnam War. From February 1966 until mid-1970, Midway was again in shipyard hands, receiving an extensive modernization that included installation of a greatly enlarged flight deck.
Upon her return to commissioned service, Midway again took part in Southeast Asian conflict combat operations. In October 1973, she changed her homeport to Yokosuka, Japan, allowing the Navy to maintain a greater carrier presence in the Far East than would have been possible from a U.S. base. During this time, she was active in the Western Pacific, Indian Ocean and Persian Gulf areas. The ship was redesignated CV-41 in June 1975 and received a major refit in 1986. In 1990-91, Midway participated in Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm, which contained and then reversed Iraqi aggression against Kuwait. After additional activity in the Philippines area and elsewhere in the Seventh Fleet area, the ship returned to the United States for the first time in some eighteen years. USS Midway was decommissioned in April 1992 and placed in the Reserve Fleet. Stricken from the Naval Vessel Register in March 1997, during 2003-2004 she was converted to a museum and is now a prominent attraction at San Diego, California, .

A great video recording of US Military services live flame exercise with machine helicopters and guns. FORT BRAGG, N.C. - Your heart is racing. The planet earth is trembling under your foot from the artillery hearth pounding the ground. You can't see due to dust and rubble filling the environment. You can't inhale because of the clouds of smoke cigarettes filling your lungs. You are able to barely hear the man next for you shouting into the ear within the roar of gunfire and explosions. That is combined arms fight, and it's really a sensory overload.
Paratroopers from 1st Battalion, 325th Airborne Infantry Regiment discovered to combat through the chaos and bafflement of battle throughout their Combined Forearms Live Fireplace Exercise which took place from March 13 19 at OP 13 here.
It looks frantic, but it's really not. You merely have to tune everything out and do your job, said Spc. Keith Stevens, a telephone and radio operator with A Co, 1st Bn., 325th AIR.
The goal of staging a CALFEX is to apply synchronization between the various elements in the deal with in the most reasonable environment possible, said Lt. Sean Gailey, battalion air functions officer.
How often have you got artillery, air support, and infantry in the same fight? It's great because it builds confidence in every the different models to work together, Gailey said.
The mission during the CALFEX was to carry out a tactical motion to a target, gain access by breaching the security perimeter, assault and clear a building, and then defeat an opponent counterattack.
The exercise gave company commanders the chance to employ almost all of the different mixed arms assets that would be available to them in real combat, including artillery support, mortars, anti-tank weapons, and demolitions.
Each company in the battalion completed multiple iterations of the assault over the course of the entire week. After beginning with dry runs and blank fire rehearsals, the exercise culminated in independent night and day live fireplace assaults.
It was very realistic with all the current rounds traveling around, said Pfc. Chuck Garcia, a medic using a Co. I asked my platoon sergeant how often people actually get shot on these things, and he said, don't ask, or you'll jinx it.
Garcia's sergeant may have just been endeavoring to scare him, however the risks were real. With artillery open fire being earned as close as it can be to the Paratroopers on the floor, the chance of friendly-fire casualties was high. But hearth support specialists like Pfc. Phillip Settles helped the artillery battery power to put appropriate rounds on target.
My job is to relay battlefield information. If information up gets scrambled, it could get unsightly out there, Settles said.
Pfc, Marc Phillips, another fire support specialist having a Co, said the CALFEX was a valuable exercise since it demonstrated the value of fire support to the infantry.
With plenty of time and enough firepower, the infantry can triumph over any obstacle. Only, they might have to take ten casualties. If the forward observer is doing his job, he can blow the obstacle up without (the infantry) even needing to move, said Phillips.

When visiting the USS Midway Aircraft Carrier, in San Diego California, learn from our mistakes. DO NOT park in the lot directly south of the carrier, the meters ($7.50) are only good for three hours. Plan to get to the actual carrier parking lot ($10/day) before the 10 am opening time to snag a spot. You will need at least 5 hours to do this museum justice if you are the type to stop and read things, and listen to the audio tour along the way. The cafe in the rear of the indoor hanger, with an outside deck seating area looked like a good plan to break up the day.
The USS Midway is the second longest serving aircraft carrier and was home to 200,000 military personnel from 1945 to 1992. It serves now as the largest museum in the world devoted to carriers and naval aviation. We visited on 01-04-2019 which was a Friday, and the crowd was very light, but still was busy.
If your time is limited, skip waiting in line for the tour of the “Island”, namely the Main Deck Control Tower. Tours run every 10 minutes, and only takes 20 people at a crack. Tour is about 20 minutes. Rooms are tight, and steep steel ladders are involved.
You can look at the line ahead of you and do the math. Although the tower is really interesting, this would be a bad trade-off if you miss all the other displays and rooms below deck! That's where the real action was!

Camp Pendleton Assists With Lilac Fire
Camp Pendleton Assistant Fire Chief Jeff Cunfliffe-Owen and Cal Fire firefighter Bryan Carter discuss air support provided during the Lilac Fire. The Lilac Fire got as close as one mile away from base and is currently 90% contained. USS Edson tour part2
USS Edson (DD-946) is a Forrest Sherman-class destroyer, formerly of the United States Navy, built by Bath Iron Works in Maine in 1958. Her home port was Long Beach, California and she initially served in the Western Pacific/Far East, operating particularly in the Taiwan Strait and off the coast of Vietnam. Her exceptionally meritorious service in 1964 in the Gulf of Tonkin was recognized with the first of three Navy Unit Commendations. During the following years she was shelled by North Vietnamese land forces, and apparently received friendly fire from the US Air Force.
Following an onboard fire in 1974, Edson returned to the West Pacific and was later commended for her roles in the evacuation of Phnom Penh and Saigon.
She was decommissioned in 1988, but the following year became a museum ship at the Intrepid Sea-Air-Space Museum in New York. Returning to Navy lay-up in 2004, it was agreed in 2012 that she should again become a museum ship, at Bay City, Michigan. A National Historic Landmark, she is one of only two surviving Forest Sherman-class destroyers.

Defining Place/Space: Contemporary Photography from Australia represents the current state of contemporary photography in Australia through the work of thirteen artists including several whose work is being shown in the United States for the first time. The featured photographers were nominated by five Australian senior curators of photography; finalists were selected by MOPA’s Executive Director and Chief Curator, Deborah Klochko.
The exhibition shows that art-making in Australia is not just about the flora and fauna of the country. The artists reflect many different perspectives on the creativity that exists in the country. The nomination of four Aboriginal artists touches upon the country’s relationship with indigenous people, and the ways that history affects art-making. Defining Place/Space is more than what people will expect. It shows a country at the forefront of photographic image-making, opening a dialogue with the rest of our world about the place Australia holds in the creation of art.
Artists featured in the exhibition include: Hoda Afshar, Polly Borland, Pat Brassington, Michael Cook, Rosemary Laing, Ricky Maynard, Tracey Moffatt, Polixeni Papapetrou, Trent Parke, Patrick Pound, Jacky Redgate, James Tylor, and Justine Varga.
A fully illustrated catalog will accompany the exhibition, and be available for purchase from MOPA’s store and website.
