1940s FLORIDA TRAVELOGUE MOVIE THIS LAND OF OURS MIAMI, TALLAHASSEE 42654
This 1947 color travelogue film about Florida is part of the Dudley Pictures Corporation “This Land of Ours” series. It opens with the gates of St. Augustine, founded by the Spanish in 1565 (:45). Two children take a drink from Ponce de Leon’s Fountain of Youth (1:04-1:10). Just outside the gates is the 1672 Castillo de San Marcos, renamed Fort Marion in 1821. (1:13-1:35). People pick celery and cauliflower (1:37-1:55). Carrots are picked using a mechanical digger (1:57). Men climb ladders to pick citrus. Shown are overflowing trucks of oranges pulling into the processing and canning plant, where the products next travel by train (2:00-2:20). Longleaf and slash pine trees are tapped for the crude gum from which turpentine and various oils are distilled (2:22-2:37). A phosphate processing plant produces fertilizer (2:39-2:55). Jacksonville [the largest city at that time of the film] is a port city (2:56-3:12). One of its largest products is cigar making, as shown by men hand-rolling them at a cigar factory (3:14-3:29). Pensacola is the home of the United States Naval Air Station (3:33-3:42). Shown in Tallahassee is the capital building (3:45), the Florida Agricultural and Mechanical College (4:00), and the Florida State College for Women (4:06). The University of Florida is in Gainesville (4:15). The camera travels down Biscayne Boulevard in Miami with its coconut palm trees (4:24-4:40) until it reaches the beaches of Biscayne Bay, covered in sunbathers (4:41-4:52). Palm Beach has luxury hotels (4:45). Huts in the Everglades house the Seminole Indians (5:14-5:50). Southern belles are shown working at Cypress Gardens (5:55), which also has a water show (6:13). The Singing Tower is at Bok Tower Gardens (6:18), Silver Springs has glass-bottomed boats through which an underwater swimming show can be seen (6:30-7:03). Crocodiles are seen at the Florida Reptile Institute, as are rattlesnakes (7:05-7:15). Dolphins perform at Marine Studios (7:16-7:37). The film summarizes Florida by showing snippets of the same clips already shown.

More information about the video content bellow:
1. Florida was the first part of the continental U.S. to be visited by Europeans. Spanish conquistador Juan Ponce de Leon gave it its name, meaning flowery land, because it was the Easter season, which in Spanish is named Pascua Florida.
2. Florida is the 3rd most populous state in the U.S., with a population of 20.6 million people. It’s also one of the most densely populated states, with 121 people per square kilometer. Florida culture is a reflection of influences and multiple inheritance; Native American, European American, Hispanic and Latino, and African American heritages can be found in the architecture and cuisine.
3. The capital city of Florida is not Miami. It’s Tallahassee, a city of just 190,000 people. But both of these cities are dwarfed by Jacksonville, which isn’t just the largest city in Florida, but by area is also the largest city in the contiguous United States. Miami is much smaller, although its metropolitan area houses over 6 million people.
4. Contrary to popular belief, Kansas is not the flattest state in the U.S. Florida is.
5. Area code 321 is the area code serving Brevard County, Florida. The area code has been in use since November 1, 1999; it was assigned to Florida (instead of suburban Chicago) after a successful petition led by local resident Robert Osband to commemorate the Space Coast's impact on Brevard County. The code refers to the countdown sequence which has launched many spacecraft from Cape Canaveral.
6. There exists a “space station of the sea”, a permanent underwater laboratory 3.5 miles off of the Florida Keys.
7. Disneyland in Orlando is its own city. It was built between two counties. Disney petitioned the Florida State legislature to let the company govern its own land, essentially making Disney World a separate city.

State Capitals Song
State Capitals Song by
This song is intended to help children memorize the state capitals of the 50 states of America.
The capitals of the United States are expected to be learned by all American school children. We have deliberately tried to cycle through the states in a fairly obvious geographical order -- with a few small jumps to enable the lyrics to have a nice rhyme and rhythm.
We have set the lyrics to what we hope is catchy but unobtrusive music to aid in the memorization process.
Even for children and adults who don't live in the USA, an awareness of the 50 capital cities and states is an advantage.
Please feel free to give us any feedback with regards to pronunciation of the capitals and states in the comments section. As will be clear from a quick listen we are not actually from America, but we hope that each state and capital city has been pronounced correctly -- despite not being said with an American accent!

A Note From Jeb:
My life changed forever when I was a young man on an exchange program in León Guanajuato, Mexico. Across a plaza, I saw a girl. For me, it was love at first sight. From the moment I got to know her, I knew that I wanted to spend the rest of my life with her. In the years ahead, whether I was changing baby diapers in Caracas, Venezuela, building a business in Miami or leading a state in Tallahassee, Columba has been with me, my best friend in all of life’s challenges and joys. Together, we have built a family with three wonderful kids: Noelle, George P., and Jeb Jr. Each of our kids has given us blessings, and now they are giving us grandkids who seem to think I’m their personal climbing gym. They call me “Gampy,” and, together with their grandmother, they keep me honest. I’m never as happy as I am when I’m with my family, and that’s been true all my life.
So when I became governor, I could be pretty relentless about getting the people’s business done. We defended and protected the most vulnerable in our society. I have always believed that as a nation, we reveal our values by how we govern those moments when life is most vulnerable. So I rolled up my sleeves, and working with the state Legislature, we enacted reforms that helped businesses, saving hundreds of millions of dollars a year– keeping jobs in the state, and making sure that Florida’s economy could work for everyone.
My Administration attacked issues like that with the same focus. We cut taxes every year. Cut the state workforce by 13,000. One year, we enacted six laws aimed at protecting our citizens’ right to bear arms. My opponents called me a lot of names, but the one I liked best was Veto Corleone. I vetoed over 2,500 line items in the state’s budget. We assessed the problem, took on the challenges and gave people the freedom to be creative and come up with solutions. When I was governor, I always believed doing the people’s work was a great joy and an incredible responsibility. I knew that as governor, I had the power to make things happen—not just give speeches. At the beginning of my second term, a friend of mine gave me a clock, which was ticking off the seconds, minutes, hours and days until my term of office was to end. It was a pretty good reminder that my ability to serve Florida was limited only by two things: time and how I used it. There were always more people to help. Jobs to create—we created 1.3 million of them. Small businesses were starting—we had more than 80,000 small businesses start in Florida when I was in office. We had prosperity to launch—and Florida’s households were earning over $1,000 more per year when I left office than when I began. We had a budget to balance, and with the help of $2 billion in vetoes, we achieved a AAA-bond rating.
That is a record I am proud to claim. That is a record I would like to bring to Washington, D.C. And that’s why I am running for President. I’m Jeb Bush, and I want your vote.
