Bootleggers, Flappers, and Gangsters - Prohibition, The Noble Experiment
Interactive videoconferencing program presented by The Herbert Hoover Presidential Library and Museum in West Branch, IA. The Presidential Primary Sources Project is a collaboration between the National Park Service, U.S. Presidential Libraries and Museums, other cultural and historic organizations, and the Internet2 community.
Presentation Date/Time:
Wednesday, February 23, 2017
Program Description:
In 1920, the 18th Amendment to the Constitution went into effect, which banned the production and sale of most alcoholic beverages. Even though the majority of Americans favored Prohibition, the law inadvertently encouraged increased drinking, spawned organized crime and disrespect for law, and made the decade the roaring 20s.
When Herbert Hoover ran for President in 1928, he promised to find a better way to enforce Prohibition. In May of 1929, President Hoover appointed George Wickersham to head the National Commission on Law Observance and Enforcement, also known as the “Wickersham Commission.” Join us as we look at campaign promises regarding prohibition in 1928 and 1932, learn about the Wickersham Commission, the rise of organized crime, and the society that did not follow the law.

Pomono | Great underwear, great outcome
Premium basics without the upcharge. For every item sold, an item will be distributed to someone in need.
At Pomono our focus is and always will be to deliver great products and services. To create an intuitive, seamless and enjoyable experience while making the cost of premium comfort more accessible.
We also believe everyone has the right to clean underwear.
There are over half a million people living without a home in the United States. On any given night these people are sleeping on the streets, in their cars or in homeless shelters. Of that number nearly 75,000 are reported to be living in New York City, making it the city with the highest rate of homelessness.
New York City is our home and our home can use a lot of our help. Through our research we found that underwear is the least donated item, making it the most requested item at homeless shelters, and charities. To help fulfill this request, Pomono ensures for every pair of underwear sold, a pair is distributed to someone in need.
Quite simple actually. Great underwear, great outcome.

What Is Coronavirus?
Health officials around the world are racing to gauge the danger posed by a new SARS-like virus that emerged in central China last month and spread rapidly, sickening hundreds and killing at least six.
Authorities are acting aggressively as the number of cases in China has grown to more than 300 and stretched to five additional countries, including the first diagnosis in the U.S. The World Health Organization will decide Wednesday whether to declare the virus an international public health emergency, a designation used for complex epidemics that can cross borders.
As they did during the SARS and Ebola outbreaks, health officials and scientists are tracking patients and testing samples of saliva and other fluids to determine the exact cause and severity of their ailments. They’re identifying and monitoring people with whom the patients were in contact to see if the virus is spreading easily from person to person. And they are placing restrictions on travel to try to limit the exposure to scores of new people.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention expanded its inspection of airline passengers who had spent time in China to airports in Atlanta and Chicago on Tuesday, building on the 1,200 people who had been screened in California and New York over the weekend. No new cases were uncovered. Six patients in China have died from the infection, which also sickened health-care workers who were caring for them.
“This is an evolving situation,” said Nancy Messonnier, director of the CDC’s National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases. “We do expect additional cases in the United States and globally.”
Researchers at the National Institutes of Health and the CDC are working on a test that will allow doctors to rapidly diagnose the virus in the field, said Schaffner, though Messonnier cautioned that it could take time.
They also started preliminary work on a vaccine to prevent the infection, Schaffner said. That could also take time, however. A vaccine for Ebola that was recently approved in the U.S. took several years to develop following outbreaks in Africa in the past decade.

Drug Special: This is How You Identify Magic Mushrooms
There are a lot of people in the world who have tried psychedelic drugs. In the United States alone, there are currently at least 30 million people who’ve taken them, and among these, magic mushrooms—colloquially known as “shrooms”—are one of the most popular choices. Playboy talks to Dr. Dina Perrone, the vice president of the board of directors at harm reduction organization DanceSafe, about different types of magic mushrooms. The purpose is to promote psychedelic harm reduction, a set of strategies and principles to reduce negative consequences associated with drug use.

World Without Cancer - The Story of Vitamin B17 by G. Edward Griffin (1974)
G. Edward Griffin (born November 7, 1931) is an American author, lecturer, and filmmaker. He is the author of World Without Cancer where he argues that cancer is a nutritional deficiency that can be cured by consuming amygdalin, a view regarded as quackery by the medical community. He is an HIV/AIDS denialist, supports the 9/11 Truth movement, and supports John F. Kennedy assassination conspiracy theories. He believes Noah's Ark is located in Turkey at the Durupınar site. [...]
In 1974, Griffin wrote and self-published the book World Without Cancer and released it as a video; its second edition appeared in 1997. In the book and the video, Griffin asserts that cancer is a metabolic disease like a vitamin deficiency facilitated by the insufficient dietary consumption of laetrile. He contends that eliminating cancer through a nondrug therapy has not been accepted because of the hidden economic and power agendas of those who dominate the medical establishment and he wrote, at the very top of the world's economic and political pyramid of power there is a grouping of financial, political, and industrial interests that, by the very nature of their goals, are the natural enemies of the nutritional approaches to health. Since the 1970s, the use of laetrile to treat cancer has been identified in the scientific literature as a canonical example of quackery and has never been shown to be effective in the treatment or prevention of cancer. Emanuel Landau, then a Project Director for the APHA, wrote a book review for the American Journal of Public Health, which noted that Griffin accepts the 'conspiracy' theory ... that policy-makers in the medical, pharmaceutical, research and fund-raising organizations deliberately or unconsciously strive not to prevent or cure cancer in order to perpetuate their functions. Landau concludes that although World Without Cancer is an emotional plea for the unrestricted use of the Laetrile as an anti-tumor agent, the scientific evidence to justify such a policy does not appear within it.

DEAN KEVIN LURIE, M.D. Vs. Kaiser Permanente - Mid-Atlantic Filed 2006
Dr. Lurie repeatedly attempted to raise the quality of care standards within the Mid-Atlantic Kaiser Permanente system. In retaliation he was accused of padding his time records. A age discrimination suit has followed his sudden termination by the Permanente with charges of padding his time. He had served the Kaiser patient population for nearly 17 years. Since leaving the Permanente Group, said Group has consistently interfered with Dr. Lurie's private practice in an attempt of further employment retaliation.
MARY H. NICHOLS OPINION v. Record No. 981388 April 16, 1999
KAISER FOUNDATION HEALTH PLAN
In this action for damages, the plaintiff alleged that while being seen by a Kaiser physician in April 1995 for respiratory disease she was given a prescription for medrol, a steroid medication. The plaintiff further alleged that the prescription was filled at Kaiser's pharmacy at Falls Church and refilled at Kaiser's pharmacy at Reston during that month. She also alleged that, without her knowledge, the pharmacies negligently provided the wrong medication, namely dexamethasone, a steroid five times more potent than medrol. The plaintiff further alleged that in May 1995 she discontinued taking the wrong medication and resumed taking the correct medication. Thereafter, plaintiff alleged, she was treated by Kaiser's physicians in an effort to relieve the pronounced side effects she suffered from taking the wrong medication.
Stephanie A. Strass v. Kaiser Foundation Health Plan of Mid-Atlantic
Description: Breach of Contract - Wrongful Termination - Human Rights Act - Employment - This case involves claims of breach of contract and wrongful termination of employment under the District of Columbia Human Rights Act, D.C. Code § 1-2512 (a)(1) (1992) (Human Rights Act or the Act), which prohibits an employer from discharging an employee for discriminatory reasons, including physical handicap. After being terminated from her employment, plaintiff, Stephanie Strass, sued her former employer, Kaiser Foundation Health Plan of the Mid-Atlantic States, Inc. (Kaiser), alleging that her employment had been terminated because of her physical handicap, hypertension, in violation of the Human Rights Act and contract of employment.
Outcome: The jury returned a verdict in favor of Strauss in the total amount of $525,047.00. The trial court set aside the verdict and granted judgment as a matter of law to Kaiser on both the breach of contract claim and violation of the Human Rights Act. The trial court concluded that Strass failed to prove that her physical condition could be accommodated reasonably.
v. Kaiser Georgetown Health Plan, 309 Md. 641, 526 A.2d 46 (1987), Medical malpractice claimant, who rejects arbitration award, must file notice of action and complaint to nullify in same court.

Brian Keating: Losing the Nobel Prize | Talks at Google
Professor Brian Keating ( is an astrophysicist with UC San Diego’s Department of Physics. He and his team develop instrumentation to study the early universe at radio, microwave and infrared wavelengths. He is the author of over 100 scientific publications and holds two U.S.Patents. He received an NSF CAREER award in 2006 and a 2007 Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers at the White House from President Bush for a telescope he invented and deployed at the U.S. South Pole Research Station called “BICEP. Professor Keating became a Fellow of the American Physical Society in 2016. He co-leads the Simons Observatory ( Cosmic Microwave Background experiments in the Atacama Desert of Chile.
His latest book, Losing the Nobel Prize: A Story of Cosmology, Ambition, and the Perils of Science's Highest Honor (link below), has been selected as one of Amazon.com’s Ten Best Nonfiction Books of the Month and one of Nature Magazine’s Six Best Books of the Season.
Brian discusses the difficult problem of exploring the beginnings of the universe, moments after the Big Bang. His quest for the Nobel Prize in Physics was stymied when his experiment which was thought to have discovered definitive proof of the Big Bang ended up just being space dust. To add insult to injury, he was then asked to be part of the nominating committee for the following year’s Nobel Prize award. His journey of self-discovery and introspection opened his eyes to the ways in which the Nobel Prize process itself is broken, and has diverged from what was originally intended by its founder, Alfred Nobel.

Biblical Series I: Introduction to the Idea of God
Lecture I in my Psychological Significance of the Biblical Stories series from May 16th at Isabel Bader Theatre in Toronto. In this lecture, I describe what I consider to be the idea of God, which is at least partly the notion of sovereignty and power, divorced from any concrete sovereign or particular, individual person of power. I also suggest that God, as Father, is something akin to the spirit or pattern inherent in the human hierarchy of authority, which is based in turn on the dominance hierarchies characterizing animals.
