The Atlantic Coast Express, Part 2 - 34046 Braunton and 5029 Nunney Castle - 8th September 2014
This tour is to mark the 50th anniversary of the last Atlantic Coast Express. As some of the original destinations are no longer on the rail map, this anniversary tour ran from London Victoria to Penzance. The outward run took place on Friday 5th September 2014. This video is of the return trip from Penzance to London. SR West Country 34046 Braunton and GWR Castle 5029 Nunney Castle took the train from Penzance to Exeter, where SR Battle of Britain 34067 Tangmere took over for the run to London Victoria.

Fremington Quay Cafe & Play Area North Devon UK
Have visited this cafe many times over recent years, and have always enjoyed my times here.. The food is always good here, but like so many places these days it is a bit expensive.. This cafe is actually situated on the Tarka Trail, and is a great place to stop off for a bite to eat for the many cyclists and hikers that pass by here on a daily basis.. They serve a fantastic Devon cream tea in this cafe.. Accompanying me here was my daughter Kim and my grandson Noah...
34067, 45407 and 44871 - The Great Britain VI 20th/21st April 2013
The sixth Great Britain railtour, promoted by Kings Lynn-based operator The Railway Touring Company, would see a change to last years itinerary. In April 2012, the Great Britain V set off from London Kings Cross behind LNER A4 4464 Bittern and headed north to Scotland, before heading south west to Bristol and Penzance on the final few days. It concluded with that memorable dash along the Great Western Main Line with Tyseley-based Castle 5043 Earl of Mount Edgcumbe, with the Earl whistling through Didcot at 70mph... This year, the original plan was to head south west first, before returning north later in the tour. Day 1 of the tour was supposed to see 5029 Nunney Castle, fresh from an overhaul, head to Taunton from Paddington via Newbury, where 34046 Braunton and 34067 Tangmere would take the train over the Devon banks to Newquay. In the event, 34046 and 5029 were not ready for the trips, and so 70000 Britannia was announced as the replacement for 5029, with the starting point changed to London Victoria, and 34067 starting at Exeter with 777 Sir Lamiel (the replacement for 34046). Unfortunately, after an operational incident meant that 70000 would not be available, and gauging issues meant that the sole-surviving N15 would not be able to take the tour from Exeter to Newquay.
With only a few days to go before the tour departed, the roster was altered again, with 34067 Tangmere taking the first leg to Exeter via Salisbury and Yeovil, and Ian Riley's ever-reliable Black 5s, 45407 and 44871 taking the train on to Par (not Newquay due to pathing issues).
Because this was the first time I was available for two days that the Great Britain railtour was in the south west, I decided to chase it into Cornwall - my first time filming on the Cornish main line properly (I had filmed at Liskeard in 2012, but only on the Looe Branch platform).
We begin this video at Woking, with 34067 Tangmere. Smack bang on time, and with green signals ahead, the Great Britain VI accelerated through, heading for the water stop at Winchfield. A few minutes later, 47245 raced through platform 4, and would attach to the train at Salisbury.
Having completed the 15 miles between Woking and Winchfield, the second camera captured the GBVI as it arrived at the water stop. Less than 15 minutes later, the tour accelerated away from Winchfield at Potbridge.
While the train watered at Woking, I jumped ahead of it and returned to my old favourite, Andover. Although the whistle and speed were good, the zoom wasn't...
While more water was taken at Salisbury, I reached Sherborne. With no one on the platform, it made for a clear shot at 34067 (and the supporting diesel) as it rounded the bend. With water being taken at Chard Junction, there was just enough time to reach Honiton station, and see the train wait for an up passenger service. It seemed half the town came out for the Great Britain VI, as the car park was packed when it came to departure time.
After catching the next train, I reached Exeter St David's with seconds to spare, and saw the departure to Riverside yard with 34067 still at the helm.
At Exeter, the two Black 5s took over from Tangmere for the run down to Par. I concluded day 1 of chasing with a risky shot, a panoramic from Exmouth across the Exe Estuary. I think this paid off though rather handsomely, with the two Black 5s at race speed. In this 3 minute shot, you can see the pair as they pass Exminster, before working their way round to Starcross and Cockwood Harbour.
Having stabled overnight in St Blazey depot in Par, the Black 5s are next seen on day 2, as they storm up the 1in60 bank to Liskeard station. From Liskeard, the pair watered at Plymouth, and there was just enough time to reach Totnes, at the bottom of Rattery bank. I wasn't expecting particularly much in terms of sound, and indeed I was right...
With another stop at Dawlish Warren, the duo were caught accelerating through Exeter St David's once again, with their 12 coach load in tow. Yet another pathing stop was made at Tiverton loop, and that allowed for one final shot of the Black 5 pair as they accelerated away towards Whiteball.
After the two Fives reached Bristol, they were taken off the train, and replaced by 34067 Tangmere. Having successfully climbed Filton Bank, 34067 is seen accelerating away from Filton Abbey Wood, while on the last leg of the journey to Cardiff (via Gloucester).
The video concludes with 34067 passing through Hook, while on a light engine movement back to Southall from Cardiff Canton.

Royal Windsor Black 5 - No. 44871 at Sunneymeads ( 25th June )
The fourth week of running the Royal Windsor Steam Express and Sunset Steam Express witnessed a change in boh forms of motive power for these trains as Black 5 no. 44871 replaced B1 no. 61306 Mayflower and a class 33 Crompton replaced the previous-used class 47. At least the latter was authentic Southern motive power! we see the train at lunchtime on Tuesday 25th June passing through the little station at Sunneymeads on the Windsor line.

Early Morning Solo Hike, Yelland North Devon England UK
While out for a early morning hike, i was surprised to see so many wrecked and abandoned boats on this stretch of beach which is close to my home.. Some were tied up, but looked like they had been there for years, and somehow forgotten about.. You don't often come across many people in this part of Yelland, as it's not what i would call on the tourist trail, so only the locals would know this area i would imagine.. This stretch of the beach is behind Isley Marsh, and one can access the Marsh from the Tarka Trail...

There are so many places in Bideford where one can eat, and this place has become one of my favourites.. This cafe/bar is onboard a ship that is permantly moored on Bideford Quay.. The food here was real nice, and the cafe is set in a wonderful location and setting.. On a day when the weather is nice, one can sit on deck enjoying the views over the River Raw while eating your meal or having a drink, and when the weather is not so good one can sit below in a really nice decorated surroundings.. This place is a bit quirky, but i love quirky places (Grin).. This place also takes bookings for special events like birthdays etc.. If anyone finds themselves in this area then i highly recommend you pay this place a visit...
5043 'Earl of Mount Edgcumbe' - 'The Berks & Hants Aquae Sulis' - 12/04/14
Having had a successful test run the previous week, 5043 'Earl of Mount Edgcumbe' was back out in force with the 'Berks & Hants Aquae Sulis', a trip previously run by Vintage Trains in 2011. As with the last tour, the trip would run from Solihull to Bristol via Didcot and Newbury, then back via Swindon.Since dad was unavailable, it was off on the train for this one. Which meant I couldn't do certain shots I'd planned such as Crofton and Dauntsey Bank. However, I did manage to do a few certain spots which I've been meaning to do for a while, as you'll see. Starting off, we see the Earl speeding towards Oxford through Tackley, a very close call with the approaching Voyager, another 10 or 15 seconds later and I would have been clean bowled, phew! Afterwards it was off to Cholsey, where she is seen storming along the Great Western Main Line after leaving Didcot. And just to make it that extra bit special, I managed to catch a Doppler Effect from her whistle, something I've been waiting for for a while! The last of the outward run shots brought me to Bath, where I went for the riverside shot looking up to the bridge, a shot I've been meaning to do but never got around to. It was worth the wait though, because the Earl's departure was quite something......the noise!
Bristol was the next port of call, and it is here where we're able to get a good look at the Earl before she moved off with the stock ready for servicing and turning. The final shot of the day brought me to Chippenham, where the Earl races through on the return to Solihull. I did have another shot planned where I would see 5043 at Tackley again, however, I didn't fancy a late finish. So I called it quits at Chippenham and headed off back home to Swindon.
A very enjoyable day out and it was great to see the Earl again after nearly six months.

The Great Britain VI - Days 1 & 2 with 34067 Tangmere, 45407 and 44871
After several changes to the motive power, and one change to the start point, the first leg of The Great Britain VI left Victoria, (not Paddington) on Saturday 20th April, behind 34067 Tangmere (not 5029, 70000 or 60019), bound for Par.
A rather leisurely schedule down the ex LSWR main line meant that we could begin at Richmond, with the crossing of the Thames, jump ahead of the Winchfield water stop to Worting Junction, then, while more water was taken at Salisbury, move on to Tisbury. Taking advantage of a pathing stop at Gillingham, and another at Yeovil Junction, we made it to Sutton Bingham for a shot across the reservoir. Another water stop at Chard Junction made it possible to reach the bridge near the summit of Honiton bank, and a final pathing stop at Honiton allowed for one more shot at Feniton.
At Exeter, Tangmere's work was done, and loco and support coach then ran to Bristol in readiness for their part in Day 2, and are seen at Stoke Canon.
From Exeter, the train was worked forward by Black 5s 45407 and 44871. We wanted to capture the pair leaving the yard at Exeter and then move on while they waited their allotted 19 minutes in the platform at St Davids, but as time passed with no sign of movement we abandoned that idea and went straight to the down platform at Exeter St Thomas.
The crossing of the Tamar should have been covered by both cameras, but the fifteen minute early arrival of the train caught out Alan, who was still looking for a suitable vantage point.
Day two began on the pitch-and-putt course at Newquay Zoo, one of the few places from which you can see the full length of the viaduct that spans the valley close to the end of the platform at Newquay station. Sadly, although you can see the length of the viaduct, you can't see the height of this most impressive structure.
Not having much experience of the Newquay branch, we had no idea what could be achieved, so we were quite surprised to find, on reaching White Cross, that we were ahead of the train. Piling out, we managed a bonus roadside shot.
Moving on to the station at Roche, we could hear the locos struggling up to the summit of the line, just around the corner, and then easing off and gathering pace before sweeping past the camera.
A rather timid coach driver, descending the gradient outside St Austell, held up all the traffic and we only just made it to the level crossing on the final approach to Par.
The half-hour stop at Par made it possible to get to Riverside and make a proper job of covering the crossing of the Tamar this time.
Another lengthy stop at Plymouth allowed us to seek out a suitable spot alongside the river Plym. At this point we have a confession to make. Somewhere between Saltash and here, the microphone on the B camera had been accidentally turned off and so, rather than waste the shot, the sound of the 5s crossing the river bridge has been borrowed from another clip. This has the advantage of losing the intrusive sound from the A38 that would have been on the original.
We managed to outrun the train to the site of Silverton station, before dashing to Yatton, passing the 5s as they took water in the loop at Tiverton Junction.
At Yatton, the presence of cameras caused quite a bit of interest, drawing several patrons from The Railway and sending one elderly gentleman, who had come to meet his wife off a local train, hurrying back to the car for his camera.
On arrival at Temple Meads, the 5s handed the train on to Tangmere for the last lap to Cardiff via Gloucester. We had planned to catch Tangmere on the sweeping curve at Rodford, where the line to Gloucester diverges from the line to London, but this was not possible, and so we ended up on the roadbridge at Yate.
From Yate, we were to have continued to either Chepstow or Severn Tunnel Junction, but on finding that we were expected to pay £6.20 to cross the Severn, and not knowing if that was each way, we declined and returned to our temporary base in Devon, from where this video was uploaded.
Old route through Barnstaple
This is currently the route through Barnstaple from the A361 link road (Tiverton) to Pottington. The new route will use part of the A39 to Bideford and the new bridge. This will in turn bring more traffic to Braunton, bringing it to a complete standstill, yes, more than normally.
