The Sanctuary of Artemis Orthia - Sparta, Greece
The Sanctuary of Artemis Orthia was one of the most important religious sites in Sparta, from about 1000 B.C.E. It was notorious in Classical times as the site where Spartan boys were whipped and beaten during their on-going military education. The Romans later added a theater and recreated this event, which was probably far more barbaric. Votive gifts were excavated during the early 20th century, including figurines and masks. Many are now on display at the nearby Sparta Museum.

Ναός Αρτέμιδος Ταυροπόλου, Λούτσα / Sanctuary of Artemis Tauropolos at Artemis, Greece

Drone Flight over Sardis: The Temple of Artemis
original .mov file, shot with a DJI Phantom 3 quadcopter
One of many circuits through the Temple of Artemis, this flight starts at the west end among the standing columns of the Roman west façade and porch. On the left is Church M, a chapel belonging to the late Antique, Christian phase of this sacred temenos. Circling around to the north, the three newly-cleaned columns and Hellenistic cella walls and column foundations stand out against the uncleaned surfaces blackened by cyanobacteria and lichen. The flight circles the two standing columns, showing the stylistic differences between the two contemporary Roman capitals — note the leaf patterns that decorate the capital that now rests skewed, compared to the much plainer capital that rests straight. The flight passes through the east and west cellas of the temple, and over the Altar of Artemis.

The myth;
As the Greek fleet was preparing to sail to Troy to force the return of Helen, the king Agamemnon killed a stag sacred to the goddess Artemis. The enraged deity caused a contrary wind and eventually forced the king to agree to sacrifice his daughter Iphigeneia in order to ensure a favorable wind for the Greek fleet. In one version of the myth, a surrogate sacrifice was provided through the divine intervention of Artemis, and the saved girl then became a priestess of the goddess among the Tauri, a people living near the Black Sea in the Crimean peninsula. Subsequent to these events, Iphigenia returns from among the Tauri with the assistance of her brother Orestes. In Euripides' version of the myth, the goddess Athena reveals that Iphigenia will make landfall in Brauron and there be the priestess of Artemis.

The temple of Zeus (Αθήνα/Athens)
The Temple of Zeus at Olympia, built in 470-456 BC, was the ancient Greek temple in Olympia, Greece, dedicated to the chief of the gods, Zeus. It was the very model of the fully-developed classical Greek temple of the Doric order. The temple stood in the most famous sanctuary of Greece, which had been dedicated to local and Pan-Hellenic deities and had probably been established towards the end of the Mycenaean period. The Altis, the enclosure with its sacred grove, open-air altars and the tumulus of Pelops, was first formed during the tenth and ninth centuries BCE, when the cult of Zeus joined the established cult of Hera.
Main article: Statue of Zeus at Olympia
It housed the cult statue of Zeus which was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The Chryselephantine statue was approximately 13 m (43 ft) high and was made by the sculptor Phidias in his workshop on the site at Olympia. He took about twelve years to complete it. On his head was a sculpted wreath of olive sprays. In his right hand he held a figure of Nike, the goddess of victory, also made from ivory and gold, and in his left hand, a scepter made with many kinds of metal, with an eagle perched on the top. His sandals were made of gold and so was his robe. His garments were carved with animals and with lilies. The throne was decorated with gold, precious stones, ebony, and ivory. The statue was the most famous artistic work in Greece.
The temple was constructed by the architect Libon, with carved metopes and triglyph friezes, topped by pediments filled with sculptures in the Severe Style, now attributed to the Olympia Master and his studio.
The main structure of the building was of a local limestone that was unattractive and of poor quality, and so it was coated with a thin layer of stucco to give it an appearance of marble. All the sculptural decoration on the temple was made of Parian marble, and the roof tiles were of the same Pentelic marble used to build the Parthenon at Athens.
The east pediment, erroneously attributed to Paeonius by Pausanias, who gave a detailed account of its sculptures in the late second century CE, depicted the myth of the chariot race between Pelops and Oenomaus,[6] with Zeus standing in the centre, flanked by standing pairs of heroes and heroines, and the two chariot groups, with recumbent figures in the corners. Hippodameia and her maid stand to Zeus' left (north), and Pelops to Zeus' right. A great part of all fifteen figures has been recovered, in carefully documented excavations; scholars still discuss the placement and interrelationships of six seated or kneeling figures in the composition, and their specific identifications.
The west pediment depicted the Centauromachy, the fight at the wedding of Peirithoos between the Lapiths and the centaurs, who had violated xenia, the sacred rules of hospitality that support the social norms. Apollo[7] stood in the centre, flanked by Peirithoos and Theseus.[8] The Lapiths have been taken to represent the civilised Olympian order of the Greeks themselves, while the Centaurs represent primitive nature of chthonic beings; the frieze also reminded fifth-century Greeks of their victory over the Persians, outsider threateners of the Hellenic order. The statue of Apollo (currently in the Archaeological Museum of Olympia) was depicted on the obverse of the Greek 1000 drachmas banknote of 1987-2001.
The pronaos and opisthodomos, the entrance portico and the balancing false portico at the rear, were constructed in antis, with six metopes at either end, carved with the 12 labours of Heracles, in which Heracles successfully defeats a series of creatures and monsters that threaten righteous order.
The Roman general Mummius dedicated twenty-one gilded shields after he sacked Corinth in 146 BCE; they were hung upon the columns. In 426 CE, Theodosius II ordered the destruction of the sanctuary, and earthquakes in 522 and 551 devastated the ruins and left the Temple of Zeus partially buried.
The site of the ancient sanctuary, long forgotten under landslips and flood siltation, was identified in 1766. In 1829 a French team partially excavated the Temple of Zeus, taking several fragments of the pediments to the Musée du Louvre. Systematic excavation began in 1875, under the direction the German Archaeological Institute, and has continued, with some interruptions, to the present time. (wikipedia)

???????? Artemis Prayer: Wiccan Goddess of the Moon & Hunt ???? [Gratitude Devotional Spell]
????️ Light a white candle during this devotional for Gratitude.
Daily Candle Rituals:
Artemis is the goddess of the wilderness and hunting, she is often seen carrying a bow and arrows. She also became associated with the moon, as her brother Apollo was with the sun. Artemis was one of the most widely venerated deities in Greece and one of the oldest. In later times she was amalgamated with the Roman goddess Diana. In Etruscan mythology, she was known as Artume.
Use this invocation to Artemis as a Wiccan prayer for gratitude or as a ritual for the Moon. This hymn was inspired by the Orphic hymn to Artemis, from the late (Greek) Hellenistic period. It can be used to call upon Artemis in her crescent or full moon aspect.
Learn more about the Orphic Hymns at
Eternally young, Artemis is a very feminine and attractive goddess, usually depicted hunting and surrounded by wild animals. She is also often represented with a lunar torch, matching her symbolism of the Moon.
Offerings to Artemis:
The cult of Artemis in her various facets was very widespread in the ancient Mediterranean world. However, it is very likely that what classical sources collect as rituals in honor of this goddess were only in later dates, and that in their origins these were cults destined for various local divinities that ended up being assimilated by Artemis, the twin sister of Apollo.
In Sparta, Artemis was one of the main divinities, with an important sanctuary whose foundation dates back to before the culmination of the process of formation of the city. In the sanctuary of Artemis Ortia a curious rite of initiation known as diamastigosis was celebrated. This consisted of the provision of a series of food on an altar, which was protected by priests bearing whips. A group of young people had to try to seize the food, and to avoid it the priests had to beat them with the whips with all possible violence. It is possible that this was some kind of initiatory rite for Spartan ephebes. However, in Roman times this ritual ended up becoming a simple violent spectacle where the curious came to witness the bloody mistreatment of young people at the hands of priests.
In Athens, the ritual of the Brauronia was celebrated in honor of Artemis, a rite of passage in which young Athenians were consecrated to the goddess. During the duration of the ritual, the girls were called arktoi, that is, bear cubs, something that is consistent with the connection of Artemis with hunting and wild animals.
A sample of the complex process of syncretism suffered by some local deities until they were identified with Artemis was found in the cults held in the city of Ephesus in honor of this divinity. The Artemis of Ephesus was, unlike the rest of the devotions of this goddess, a divinity of maternal and telluric nature. We do not know the process of syncretism that led to identify this divinity with Artemis, but the sources of classical and late epoch already speak without any doubt of a cult in honor of this goddess.
Nemisis Temple at Rhamnous, Greece
Rhamnous is an archaeological site on the east coast of Greece near Marathon. It's about an hour and a half ride from Athens. I'm here in May which is the best time to visit Greece due to weather and tourists. It is so peaceful and quiet here as I roam the site completely alone. There is a little hut at the entrance where you pay 2-3 euros and it's a nice walk to Nemisis Temple and on down a rugged path to the fortress overlooking the sea. Like many Greek historical sites, there is but a skeleton staff due to fiscal restraints. It's nice to walk the area without hassles. This place is a bit difficult to find unless you get a decent map, but well worth the trip.
