When we sail in the Saronic Gulf, we love to snorkel in the ancient Sunken City. These underwater ruins were the home of a bourgeois family, which has been reclaimed by the sea as sea levels have changed in this area over the centuries. The ruins are easily accessible, since they are under only 2-7 meters of water. They're lit spectacularly by the sun.
Last week, we dropped an anchor here for lunch, took a swim, and then sailed around the bend to moor in the proper port of Epidavros. Epidavros has a tiny village and two amphitheaters. One is a short hike through tan orange grove, and the other, more famous one, is a short taxi ride.
See our Saronic Gulf Tour to find out what other ports we visit on this sailing route. Come sail with Captain Alex. He's an RYA Yachtmaster Instructor. Even if you have zero sailing experience, you can take the helm of our sailing yacht, NISI. Captain Alex will coach you and tell you everything you need to know.

Sanctuary of Asklepios at Epidaurus - UNESCO World Heritage Site
The Sanctuary of Asklepios at Epidaurus is a fascinating and unusual UNESCO World Heritage Site in Greece. It's an ancient sanctuary - a health retreat, dating back 2500 years. Ancient Greeks would come here to be treated and recover from illness, and in some ways it's the birthplace of modern medicine as well. Let's have a closer look!

GREECE: EXPLORING WORLD'S first HEALING CENTER and HOSPITAL COMPLEX ????️(EPIDAURUS)
SUBSCRIBE: - Let's tour the world's largest, and most ancient, healing centre located in central Greece and knows as The Asklepieion of Epidaurus (Ασκληπιείον τής Επιδαύρου). Vic Stefanu, vstefanu@yahoo.com. The asclepeion at Epidaurus was the most celebrated healing center of the Classical world, the place where ill people went in the hope of being cured. To find out the right cure for their ailments, they spent a night in the enkoimeteria, a big sleeping hall. In their dreams, the god himself would advise them what they had to do to regain their health. Within the sanctuary there was a guest house with 160 guestrooms. There are also mineral springs in the vicinity, which may have been used in healing.
Greece is a country in southeastern Europe with thousands of islands throughout the Aegean and Ionian seas. Influential in ancient times, it's often called the cradle of Western civilization. Athens, its capital, retains landmarks including the 5th-century B.C. Acropolis citadel with the Parthenon temple. Greece is also known for its beaches, from the black sands of Santorini to the party resorts of Mykonos.

Diving Sunken City of Epidavros, Greece
A portion of the Greek city of Epidavros flooded over the past 2000 years, with some Roman-era ruins now just offshore. It's so shallow and so close to an easily accessible beach that Meg and I just snorkeled rather than bothering with tanks, but was still pretty cool to see Roman ruins in this sort of environment. This was my last video of the dive, and I focused in on some of the (older) Greek foundations of the Roman villa, as well as getting side-tracked chasing a few fish.
For the technicals: I took this video with a $15 camera less than an inch cube stuffed into the dry-pouch with my car keys. This was my first time actually using it; I don't like it as well has my old fauxpro for diving, but might be able to make it work, especially if I could rig a good mask mount. Or I may just relegate this to disposable tasks like getting duct-taped under a car or something, and get a better camera for diving...

The secret seabed of Palaia Epidavros | Epidavros
A short distance from the village are lovely beaches, such as Gialasi with an organized camp site, beach bars and water sports, Vagonia, Kalamaki and others. For those who like rambling, hiking, bicycling there are pathways leading to the archaeological sites and to beaches.
The clean safe waters are ideal for snorkeling. For those interested in such an experience there is the local Epidive center. Visible along part of the underwater route are submerged ruins of the ancient city. Another of the activities available in Archaia Epidavros is hang gliding. The local Flying Paradise attracts parachutists from Greece and Europe, as the gentle rising air currents of the area favour this sport.
