Navy Pier - San Diego California [4K]
In the plaza next to the USS Midway is a set of statues commemorating Bob Hope's commitment to the US military. Sit along the waterfront to hear recordings of Hope entertaining the troops. Walk a few yards down to see Unconditional Surrender, more famously known as the Kissing Statue.
The USS Midway was the United States' longest-serving aircraft carrier of the 20th century, from 1945 to 1992. The USS Midway Museum is a historical naval aircraft carrier museum located in downtown San Diego, California at Navy Pier. The museum consists of the aircraft carrier Midway. The ship houses an extensive collection of aircraft, many of which were built in Southern California
Unconditional Surrender is a series of sculptures by Seward Johnson resembling a photograph by Alfred Eisenstaedt, V–J day in Times Square, but said by Johnson to be based on a similar, less well known, photograph by Victor Jorgensen. The original statue was first installed in Sarasota, Florida, then was moved to San Diego, California and New York City. Other versions have been installed in Hamilton, New Jersey; Pearl Harbor, Hawaii; and Normandy, France.

ALS Ice Bucket Challenge 2014 - San Diego USS Midway and Unconditional Surrender
I was challenged by my sister-in-law to do the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. Challenge.. Accepted! I decided to make it scenic. The USS Midway is in the background as well as the new Unconditional Surrender Statue.
I now nominate Alex Sokolovsky, Mike Yebba and Derek Gau to dump an ice bucket on their heads within 24 hours or donate $100 to ALS.

San Diego (Spanish for Saint Didacus) is a major city in California, on the coast of the Pacific Ocean in Southern California, approximately 120 miles (190 km) south of Los Angeles and immediately adjacent to the border with Mexico. With an estimated population of 1,381,069 as of July 1, 2014, San Diego is the eighth-largest city in the United States and second-largest in California. It is part of the San Diego–Tijuana conurbation, the second-largest transborder agglomeration between the US and a bordering country after Detroit–Windsor, with a population of 4,922,723 people. San Diego is the birthplace of California and is known for its mild year-round climate, natural deep-water harbor, extensive beaches, long association with the United States Navy and recent emergence as a healthcare and biotechnology development center. Historically home to the Kumeyaay people, San Diego was the first site visited by Europeans on what is now the West Coast of the United States. Upon landing in San Diego Bay in 1542, Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo claimed the entire area for Spain, forming the basis for the settlement of Alta California 200 years later. The Presidio and Mission San Diego de Alcalá, founded in 1769, formed the first European settlement in what is now California. In 1821, San Diego became part of the newly-independent Mexico, which reformed as the First Mexican Republic two years later. In 1850, it became part of the United States following the Mexican–American War and the admission of California to the union. The city is the seat of San Diego County and is the economic center of the region as well as the San Diego–Tijuana metropolitan area. San Diego's main economic engines are military and defense-related activities, tourism, international trade, and manufacturing. The presence of the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), with the affiliated UCSD Medical Center, has helped make the area a center of research in biotechnology:

Road trip #18 - Last day in the US in San Diego
That was our last day in the US. Visiting San Diego before going back to Los Angeles for our flight back to the UK.
The Kiss Statue USS Midway San Diego
The 25 ft tall Kiss statue is of the famous photograph taken by Alfred Eisenstaedt during the VJ Day celebrations in Times Square in 1945.
Located next to the USS Midway Museum in downtown San Diego the statue is quite popular with couples striking the same pose and having their picture taken next to the huge figures
The official name of the 6,000-pound sculpture is Unconditional Surrender however most people just call it the kiss statue. The work of art was dedicated on February 11, 2007 and has been turning heads ever since.
On valentines day 2013 a new permanent bronze kiss statue replaced the original foam core version.
Edith Shain the woman who is being kissed in the statue attended the unveiling of the original statue , she died in 2010 at age 91.

USS MIDWAY AIRCRAFT CARRIER-SAN DIEGO PEACE STATUE-SAN DIEGO CA-EP47
When visiting the USS Midway Aircraft Carrier, in San Diego California, learn from our mistakes. DO NOT park in the lot directly south of the carrier, the meters ($7.50) are only good for three hours. Plan to get to the actual carrier parking lot ($10/day) before the 10 am opening time to snag a spot. You will need at least 5 hours to do this museum justice if you are the type to stop and read things, and listen to the audio tour along the way. The cafe in the rear of the indoor hanger, with an outside deck seating area looked like a good plan to break up the day.
The USS Midway is the second longest serving aircraft carrier and was home to 200,000 military personnel from 1945 to 1992. It serves now as the largest museum in the world devoted to carriers and naval aviation. We visited on 01-04-2019 which was a Friday, and the crowd was very light, but still was busy.
If your time is limited, skip waiting in line for the tour of the “Island”, namely the Main Deck Control Tower. Tours run every 10 minutes, and only takes 20 people at a crack. Tour is about 20 minutes. Rooms are tight, and steep steel ladders are involved.
You can look at the line ahead of you and do the math. Although the tower is really interesting, this would be a bad trade-off if you miss all the other displays and rooms below deck! That's where the real action was!
