About West Hollywood:
West Hollywood, occasionally referred to locally as WeHo (/ˈwiːhoʊ/), is a city in Los Angeles County, California, United States. Incorporated in 1984, it is home to the Sunset Strip. As of the 2010 census, its population was 34,399.[7] It is considered one of the most prominent gay villages in the United States.[9]
Geography[edit]
West Hollywood is bounded by the city of Beverly Hills on the west,[10] and on other sides by neighborhoods of the city of Los Angeles: Hollywood Hills on the north,[11] Hollywood on the east,[12] the Fairfax District on the southeast, and Beverly Grove on the southwest.[13] The city's irregular boundary is featured in its logo; it was largely formed from the unincorporated Los Angeles County area that had not become part of the surrounding cities.[14]
West Hollywood benefits from a very dense, compact urban form with small lots, mixed land use, and a walkable street grid. According to Walkscore, a website that ranks cities based on walkability, West Hollywood is the most walkable city in California with a Walkscore of 89.[15] Commercial corridors include the nightlife and dining focused on the Sunset Strip, along Santa Monica Boulevard, and the Avenues of Art and Design along Robertson, Melrose, and Beverly Boulevard.[citation needed]
Residential neighborhoods in West Hollywood include the Norma Triangle, West Hollywood North, West Hollywood West, West Hollywood East, and West Hollywood Heights, all of which are only a few blocks long or wide. Major intersecting streets typically provide amenities within walking distance of adjacent neighborhoods.

Driving Downtown - Sunset Strip 4K - USA
Driving Downtown Streets - Sunset Boulevard - Los Angeles California USA - Episode 80.
Starting Point: Sunset Boulevard .
The Sunset Strip is the name given to the mile-and-a-half (2.4 km) stretch of Sunset Boulevard that passes through West Hollywood, California. The Strip is probably the best-known portion of Sunset, embracing boutiques, restaurants, rock clubs, and nightclubs that are on the cutting edge of the entertainment industry. It is also known for its trademark array of huge, colorful billboards.
Cultural Aspects:
The Sunset Strip portion of Sunset Boulevard in West Hollywood has been famous for its active nightlife at least since the 1950s.
In the 1970s, the area between Gardner Street and Western Avenue was a center for street prostitution. Shortly after a well publicized June 1995 incident, police raids drove out the majority of prostitutes on the Boulevard.
Part of Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood is also sometimes called Guitar Row due to the large number of guitar stores and music industry-related businesses, including the recording studios Sunset Sound Studios and United Western Recorders.
The portion of Sunset Boulevard that passes through Beverly Hills was once named Beverly Boulevard.
At 4334 W. Sunset Boulevard, lies the wall featured on the cover of the late singer-songwriter Elliott Smith's 2000 album, Figure 8. Since Elliot's death in 2003, the wall has become a mural for the artist where fans have left many personal messages over the years.

Los Angeles Night Driving Tour: Cinco de Mayo, Sunset Blvd & Hollywood Blvd
According to a paper published by the UCLA Center for the Study of Latino Health and Culture about the origin of the observance of Cinco de Mayo in the United States, the modern American focus on that day first started in California in the 1860s in response to the resistance to French rule in Mexico.
Far up in the gold country town of Columbia (now Columbia State Park) Mexican miners were so overjoyed at the news that they spontaneously fired off rifle shots and fireworks, sang patriotic songs and made impromptu speeches.
A 2007 UCLA Newsroom article notes that, the holiday, which has been celebrated in California continuously since 1863, is virtually ignored in Mexico.
TIME magazine reports that Cinco de Mayo started to come into vogue in 1940s America during the rise of the Chicano Movement.
The holiday crossed over from California into the rest of the United States in the 1950s and 1960s but did not gain popularity until the 1980s when marketers, especially beer companies, capitalized on the celebratory nature of the day and began to promote it.
It grew in popularity and evolved into a celebration of Mexican culture and heritage, first in areas with large Mexican-American populations, like Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston and San Jose.
In a 1998 study in the Journal of American Culture it was reported that there were more than 120 official US celebrations of Cinco de Mayo in 21 different states. An update in 2006 found that the number of official Cinco de Mayo events was 150 or more, according to José Alamillo, a professor of ethnic studies at Washington State University in Pullman, who has studied the cultural impact of Cinco de Mayo north of the border.[35] Los Angeles' Fiesta Broadway has been billed as the largest Cinco de Mayo celebration in the world, which it most certainly was at its peak in the 1990s when it attracted crowds of 500,000 or more. In recent years attendance has seen a dramatic decrease.
On June 7, 2005, the United States Congress issued a concurrent resolution calling on the President of the United States to issue a proclamation calling upon the people of the United States to observe Cinco de Mayo with appropriate ceremonies and activities. To celebrate, many display Cinco de Mayo banners while school districts hold special events to educate students about its historical significance. Special events and celebrations highlight Mexican culture, especially in its music and regional dancing. Examples include baile folklórico and mariachi demonstrations held annually at the Plaza del Pueblo de Los Ángeles, near Olvera Street. Commercial interests in the United States have capitalized on the celebration, advertising Mexican products and services, with an emphasis on alcoholic beverages, foods, and music
Events tied to Cinco de Mayo also occur outside Mexico and the United States. As in the United States, celebrations elsewhere also emphasize Mexican cuisine, culture and music. For example, Windsor, Ontario, Canada, holds an American-style Cinco de Mayo Street Festival, some Canadian pubs play Mexican music and serve Mexican food and drink, and a sky-diving club near Vancouver holds a Cinco de Mayo skydiving event
RAINBOW BAR AND GRILL - Sunset Strip
The Rainbow Bar and Grill is a bar and restaurant on the Sunset Strip in West Hollywood, California, United States adjacent to the border of Beverly Hills, California. Its address is 9015 Sunset Boulevard.
The bottom level of the building is the restaurant, The Rainbow Bar and Grill. Upstairs is an exclusive club called Over the Rainbow, which consists of a full bar, dance floor, and a DJ booth. The restaurant is next to The Roxy Theatre and The Key Club.
The restaurant was founded in early 1972 by Elmer Valentine, Lou Adler, Mario Maglieri and others,[1] opening on April 16, 1972 with a party for Elton John.[2] At the time, the word rainbow signified peace and freedom. It quickly became known as a hangout for celebrities of all types.[3] John Belushi ate his last meal[4] (lentil soup)[5] at table #16. For many years, the owner was Mario Maglieri.[3]
Before becoming the Rainbow, the restaurant was the Villa Nova restaurant, which was originally owned by film director Vincente Minnelli, at the time married to Judy Garland. Joe DiMaggio and Marilyn Monroe met at the restaurant on a blind date in 1952.[6]
The Rainbow became known as a hangout for rock musicians and their groupies. Notable regulars at the Rainbow in this period include Lemmy, John Lennon, Keith Moon, Micky Dolenz, Grace Slick, Ringo Starr, Neil Diamond, Janis Joplin,[4] Led Zeppelin, Alice Cooper, Lizzy Valentine and many others. Elvis Presley was known to have occasionally visited the Rainbow. The famous group of musicians called The Hollywood Vampires made the Rainbow their home away from home in the early 1970's.
Los Angeles songwriter Warren Zevon referenced the scene at the Rainbow in the last verse of his 1976 song Poor Poor Pitiful Me.
The musical group Rainbow was named after this club.
The track Rainbow Bar & Grill from the Cheech & Chong album Let's Make a New Dope Deal takes place in the bar and restaurant.
Producer Kim Fowley used to hangout at the Rainbow, especially in 1975, when he formed the all-girl group The Runaways.
As musical trends on the Strip changed towards heavy metal in the 1980s, the Rainbow followed suit. Members of Mötley Crüe,[7] Poison, and Guns N' Roses frequented the bar.[8] It was mentioned in a number of songs, such as Sunset and Babylon by W.A.S.P., Vampire by L.A. Guns and Peach Kelli Pop by Redd Kross, and featured in the videos of November Rain, Knocking on heaven's door, Estranged and Don't Cry by Guns N' Roses.
Anthony Kiedis of the Red Hot Chili Peppers noted in his book Scar Tissue that he often sat with his father, Blackie Dammett, at the club along with various members of bands such as Led Zeppelin. Often the waitresses and bartenders were groupies as well as those who frequented the establishment. In Pamela Des Barres' book, Let's Spend the Night Together, the author commented that as an employee in the early 1980s she met a number of celebrities including Billy Idol.[9]
