The Weekend Theater of Little Rock Presents Southern Cross
Southern Cross
By Jon Klein
August 10, 11, 17, 18, 24, 25.
Southern Cross is an epic play that navigates the river of history in the Southern United States, uncovering cycles of retribution and deliverance. The paths of many historical figures cross, from the Civil War to the era of Civil Rights. The more familiar stories include General William T. Sherman's march to the sea, Huey Long's rise and fall, Martin Luther King's struggles in Selma, and the exploitation of Elvis Presley. Lesser known figures also share the stage: defiant landowners, runaway slaves and brave martyrs to the cause of freedom. And a steam boat captain is on hand to contribute a little typical folklore. Historical moments are juxtaposed to show the echoes and resonances of history. For example, the humorous, joyful adventure of a slave who ferried hundreds of people to freedom across the Ohio River, is followed by tear gas and clubs as a freedom marcher attempts to cross the Edmund Pettis Bridge. Finally, all the different stories of the play come together in a chilling finale.

Fun Things To Do In Little Rock Arkansas
I know when you think of cool places to visit Little Rock may not be the first place that comes to mind but honestly if you live anywhere in the area or are an outdoor enthusiast it should be.
Little Rock, Arkansas sits on the banks of the Arkansas River located in the center of the state. And with a population of nearly 200,000 people, it's the largest city in Arkansas and definitely the place to find a good time at a great value.
Go actually find the “Little rock” little rock is named after. This can be found in La Petite Roche Plaza in Riverfront Park on the Arkansas River. Such a great place for kids to explore with a park that incorporates its surroundings into the playground and sights that will put a smile on everyone's face. (Free)
The arts flourish in Little Rock, Arkansas with the gallery at the Arkansas Arts Center, offering free admission and housing one of the most-acclaimed collections of works on paper in the country. (Free)
The Big Dam Bridge spans the Arkansas River and Murray Lock and Dam between Little Rock and North Little Rock and is open only to pedestrian and bicycle traffic, which is awesome if you love getting away from traffic like we do.. At 4,226 feet in length it is the longest pedestrian/bicycle bridge in North America that has never been used by trains or motor vehicles. (Free)
MacArthur Museum of Arkansas Military History. Located in the historic Tower Building of the Little Rock Arsenal--the birthplace of General Douglas MacArthur--the museum preserves the contributions of Arkansas men and women who served in the armed forces. Exhibits feature artifacts, photographs, weapons, documents, uniforms and other military items that vividly portray Arkansas's military history at home and abroad. (Free)
Museum of Discovery, not free, Adults $10, children $8. The museum has many fun, hands-on exhibits with a focus on STEM learning. They have the one of the world's largest bi-polar Tesla coils, a tornado ally experience and hands-on looks at geology, anatomy, and math. It's a great museum for kids and adults. We had one extremely rainy day in Little Rock so we were very grateful for the museum of discovery at that time.
Pinnacle Mountain is also supposed to be an pretty neat experience but on our personal trip we opted for the Big Dam Bridge instead due to wanting to drive less and children’s nap times.
Thank you so much for watching. Make sure to subscribe. I hope you enjoyed our adventure. Now go out there and make your own!

The Weekend Theater of Little Rock Presents Judgment at Nuremberg
Judgment at Nuremberg
By Abby Mann
December 2, 3, 9, 10, 16, 17
While Judgment at Nuremberg concerns a specific time, a specific place, and specific actions by particular people, the issues it raises reverberate from World War II and challenge us today -- exactly what is a war crime, how good people can perpetrate evil, how easily fear can be manipulated.
Abby Mann's riveting interpretation of a 1947 trial of former Nazi judges accused of war crimes opens with a performance at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 2, at the Weekend Theater, Seventh and Chester streets in downtown Little Rock.
Performances continue at 7:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays through Dec. 17. To reserve tickets, $16 for general admission and $12 for students and seniors age 65 and older, call (501) 374-3761 or visit the Web site at weekendtheater.org.
While rehearsing, director Ralph Hyman and the cast have been mindful not only of the sobering history behind the play, but also current reports of American military atrocities occurring during the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and the prison camps at Guantanamo Bay and Abu Gharib.
Says director Ralph Hyman, The reason I wanted to produce and direct 'Judgment at Nuremberg' this year is because I believe that people forget about how abusive all humans can become if we do not get reminded over and over that it is so easy to slip into denial and rationalization.
Some of the greatest minds in the world allow their use of power to become abuse of power by committing one inappropriate act, convincing themselves of that act's not being 'really bad', and duplicating it over and over until they can no longer recognize how greatly their morality has been lost. This theatrical production reminds us that even the 'good people,' perhaps especially the 'good people,' become deaf, dumb, and blind with the use, misuse, and eventual abuse of power.
Mann first dramatized the trials depicted in Judgment at Nuremberg for a 1957 television program, then a famed, Academy Award-winning 1961 film; he reworked the script for live theater in 2001. The trial he depicts was part of the second wave of post-war tribunals attempting to bring various Nazi functionaries to justice.
Four judges, including Ernest Janning, (Alan Douglas), are accused of using their positions to further Nazi policies they knew were unjust -- in their case, the prosecution of an elderly Jewish man who was sentenced to death for an improper relationship with an Aryan woman.
As the accused make their defense before a panel headed by chief judge Dan Haywood (Tom Crone), and the atrocities come to light, Haywood is determined to push ahead despite political pressures -- West Germany was emerging as an ally of United States against the Soviet Union, complicating the proceedings.
Also in the cast are Matt Maguire as Colonel Parker, Frank Butler as General Merrin, Ebon Jones as Captain Byers, Tucker Steinmetz as Judge Ives, Chris Biagini as Judge Norris, Thomas Sullivan as Emil Hahn, Wyatt Jones as Fredrich Hofstetter, Ovid Lamb as Werner Lammpe, David Anderson as Oscar Rolfe, Byron Taylor as Dr. Wickert, Jenifer Hamel as Mrs. Halbestadt, Deb Lewis as Mme. Bertolt, Johnnie Brannon as Rudolf Peterson, Drew Ellis as Geuter, Samantha Porter as Maria Wallner, and Patti German as Elsa Lindnow.
One of the main themes underlying the proceedings is how an entire culture, an entire nation, can with careful manipulation of fears, turn into a hateful thing, says cast member Tucker Steinmetz. Good, decent people were corrupted and either participated or looked the other way.
And just as the Jews were made scapegoats for the German defeat in World War I to justify their persecution, some see a parallel in the current demonization of all Muslims for the actions of the terrorist minority that perpetrated the 9/11 attacks and other attempted actions. In this line of thinking, if you demonize an entire group, it doesn't matter what you do to them -- they're bad, so it's justified.
Judgment at Nuremberg reminds us that justice should be tempered with humanity -- and humility.
The Weekend Theater of Little Rock Presents The Laramie Project: Ten Years Later
The Laramie Project: Ten Years Later
By Moisés Kaufman, Leigh Fondakowski, Greg Pierotti, Andy Paris and Stephen Belber
January 13, 14, 20, 21, 27, 28
In 1998, the murder of gay University of Wyoming student Matthew Shepard in Laramie shocked the nation, brutally illustrating just what a hate crime was -- and providing the inspiration for a powerful stage play, The Laramie Project.
In 2008, playwright Moises Kaufman and his Tectonic Theater Project crew --Leigh Fondakowski, Greg Pierotti, Andy Paris and Stephen Belber -- revisited Laramie to once again explore how the tragedy has affected the city.
The Laramie Project: Ten Years Later, the result of all those interviews, opens Friday, Jan. 13, at the Weekend Theater, Seventh and Chester streets in downtown Little Rock.
Showtimes are at 7:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays through Jan. 28. Tickets, $16 for general admission and $12 for students and seniors age 65 and over can be reserved by calling (501) 374-3761 or online at weekendtheater.org.
Sponsors for this production are Canvas Community Church, Quapaw Quarter United Methodist Church, Open Door Community Church, and New Beginnings Church of Central Arkansas.
Duane Jackson, who directed the first Laramie Project for Weekend Theater a few seasons ago, also directs the new show. Local actors David Anderson, Johnnie Brannon, Alan Douglas, Jeremy Estill, Julie Atkins, Sally Graham, Regi Ott, and Roben Sullivant each take on multiple roles to portray the various interviewees.
It has been a joy to see these actors give voice to all of these Laramie residents and make them real people, Jackson says. Kaufman and the cast did interview some of the original people from the first 'Laramie Project,' but there are different residents for this epilogue. The focus is more on how Laramie has changed, if at all, and the effect this has had on its residents.
It does focus on the right for equality and how Matthew's death has changed the opinions of some of the Laramie residents, including one of the investigators on the murder case.
Among the new interviewees are Aaron McKinney and Russell Henderson, the young men who brutally beat Matthew and left him for dead after he left a local bar with them; they are each serving two life terms for the murder. And Judy Shepard, Matthew's mother, gets her say. Both segments, Jackson says, are riveting in what they reveal.
As the play starts, the murder of Matthew Shepard might seem somewhat of a remote, distant memory -- it has been a decade, after all. However, the memory soon becomes fresh and raw all over again.
We find a population struggling with the legacy of the tragedy, and their place in history. Attitudes have changed for the better, as exemplified by the Shepard Symposium for Social Justice, held every year at the University of Wyoming. But there is also a let's just move on feeling among several citizens, and the play doesn't shy away from presenting those viewpoints.
The first staged reading of Ten Years Later was in 2009, and even since then, there have been a few changes, so Jackson and his cast have been mindful of updating some information in the script -- for example, the 2011 repeal of the Don't Ask, Don't Tell, rule for gays and lesbians serving in the military, as well as the recent hate crimes act signed into law.
Good change has occurred, yes, but society still has quite a way to go in achieving true tolerance.
People sometimes think that we've moved forward and that hate crimes are a thing of the past or don't happen here in Arkansas, but that is not the case, Jackson says. This problem still exists, whether it be in the form of true physical violence or verbal abuse.
Calling someone a derogatory name based on their sex, race, sexual orientation or gender identity is the seed of hatred that leads to these types of crimes against individuals.
The Laramie Project: Ten Years Later is a bold new work that reminds us not to be complacent.

VLOG | Last Day of Vacation | Date DAY | Road Trip into Little Rock
Hate to see this week come to an end, but I gotta get back to the daily grind. We had an eventful day. Caught a matinee at our favorite theater, drove through downtown Little Rock and by War Memorial Stadium as well as the Capital Building. Then, it was on to our favorite restaurant, Texas Roadhouse. Phone was almost dead after that, but we stopped at Baskin Robbins for a double scoop on the way home. It was a good day! Enjoy the footage!
