Thun is a municipality in the municipality of Thun in the canton of Bern, Switzerland.
Thun is called the gateway to the Bernese Oberland. The city is located at the outflow of the Aare from Lake Thun. Thun is the eleventh largest city in Switzerland. The agglomeration of Thun has about 90,000 inhabitants.
The castle towers proudly over the late medieval old town with the famous sidewalks. Here you can stroll, shop and feast on two levels. Culinary and cultural Thun has something to offer for every taste and is also an ideal starting point for sports activities or excursions in the Alps.

Lake Thun (Thunersee) is an Alpine lake in the Bernese Oberland in Switzerland. It took its name from the city of Thun, on its northern shore.
On the northern edge of the Alps, in the midst of the Bernese Oberland, Lake Thun is surrounded by famous mountains such as the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau and the awesome pyramid of Mount Niesen.

Switzerland playlist Interlaken makes a perfect home base for exploring the beautiful mountains all around the central region of Switzerland, offering many hotels, restaurants and shops, and wonderful train and bus connections to get up to the mountain sites. Tourists have been coming to Interlaken and the area since about 1800 when it was first popularized by some romantic painters and then tourism really increased in the 1890s and early 1900s with the opening of railway service.
Some of the world's most spectacular mountain scenery is waiting for you just outside of Interlaken in the heart of the Swiss Alps. In this movie we’re focusing on how to get the most out of your visit to the town. For the more adventurous you can go paragliding. Or for something less adventurous you can just rent a bicycle and go peddle around. There's a lot to see in the Interlaken area. The town itself is relatively flat and you can peddle through the shopping areas and up into the residential zones.
A main activity in town is shopping – all sorts of souvenirs for sale, clothing, you can buy some hiking gear. It's a great place for backpacks, for boots, hats, clothing of all kinds, walking sticks and a T-shirt that says Interlaken.
There's not much of a pedestrian zone that's free of automobiles here but they do have one little lane that's for pedestrians. But the rest of town is very friendly for walking around, the sidewalks are wide and there's always things to look at and things to do.
The great meadow forms a major park, beautifully landscaped and kept in a semi-natural state with flowers and trees and the meadow along one side and grand hotels on the other.
If you’re a gambler there is a casino like there is in most Swiss towns and it's an elegant place. It’s part of the Kursal complex which for 100 years has been a cultural center of the city, set in a beautiful park with fountains and flowers.
Another major attraction worth seeing near Interlaken is the city of Bern the political capital of Switzerland and it's just one hour away by train.
The Bern train station is right next to the old town so your walk through the historic zone begins the moment you arrive. The main street proceeds directly from the front of the train station right through the historic center. It's one street about ten blocks long, but it changes name several times. By the station and it's the Spitalgasse, then it becomes the Marktgasse, then the Kramgasse, then the Gerechtigkeitsgasse. Today, it's the main street of Bern, as it has been for centuries. This road is remarkable, not only for the ancient buildings and arcades that cover both sides, but for the spectacular Renaissance fountains down the middle. Today it's a popular shopping street with surprisingly modern shop interiors, and there's a slight curve with a long line of Baroque façades that combine to produce one of Bern's most impressive streetscapes. This Kramgasse and its buildings are part of the UNESCO World Heritage site that encompasses the entire old city of Bern – a very impressive honor that UNESCO has designated all of the historic area as a World Heritage Site.
At the end of town across the river they have their famous bear pits. In recent years the government has greatly expanded this bear habitat to make it really a pleasant place for the bears to live.
Another important building is the Gothic cathedral with the nation's highest church tower at 328 feet, which you may climb for a bird’s eye view of the historic center. Construction of the cathedral began in 1421 in the Gothic style. It is a three-nave basilica without a transept or aisles, 85 m long and 34 m wide – it is quite huge. The walls outside are supported by flying buttresses and the majority of the building is constructed with local sandstone, and bricks were used for the ceiling for the vaults.
On the train ride back to Interlaken it is easy to get off at the picturesque city of Thun and spend a few hours walking around, enjoying the special ambience of this place, with a river running through the middle of the Old Town and a unique two-level sidewalk on the main pedestrian street. Then return to Interlaken and continue our exploration of this great city.

Thun is an excellent destination to travel to if you want to admire the beauty of nature in Switzerland. It is conveniently located in the centre of the Bernese Oberland region and it is a perfect mix of lake and mountain amidst mild weather that lasts well into autumn.
Thun’s most recognizable landmark is the Thun Castle, also known as “Schloss Thun”. With history going back all the way to when the first settlers arrived in the city in 2,500 B.C, this building has a lot of stories to tell. The castle’s fortification tower was built in 1180 and since then it has been converted into a museum with over five floors of cultural development. It houses historic artifacts from around 4,000 years, as well as medieval objects, weapons and uniforms from the 18th and 19th century. There is also the magnificent Knight’s Hall, restored in modern times but dating back to the 12th century.
The Old Town in Thun perfectly compliments the castle. With its raised pavements and museums you’ll feel like you have stepped back in time. In a way, the Old Town is highly traditional with the town church dating back to 1330, and the town hall erected in the 16th century. However, Thun has also caught up with modern times, as there are a few brand new cinemas in the town and many restaurants offering local and international cuisine. The top activity here, though, is shopping – with almost 1,000 shops offering anywhere from watches, sports equipment, and clothes to souvenirs, handicrafts, and art objects.

It looks like a caste from a fairytail
and beside the castle
there are many other old buidlings how could also be in a fairytail. So many buildings with towers or galerias.
The river Aare even splits in two rivers to create an island
And than the rivers gets back to one

The lake of Thun offers different types of watersports.
Next to the lake there is a swimming pool.
There a lots of mountains you can hike up
Ofcourse you van do differt types of sports on the land in the mountains to.
The mountains have differt higjts here from a little above 1000 to 4000 meter
So for everybody his or her type of mountain.
and yes
there are restaurant, cafes, bars and squares where you van relax and chill
There is a great park with a castle which is now a very nice hotel
Traveltip, holidaytip:
Eat a rösti.
It is typical Swiss food and it comes in lot of variaty also with or without meat.
I love Switzerland
I grew up going on holidays in these area. Most it was Austria.
The love for the mountains and the lakes i got from my parents
I will always be gracefull for that love
It gave me the love for traveling
Travelling is the only thing that cost money and makes your richer!

Thun is located at the head of the lake to which it gave its name and standing at the lakeside we have wonderful views of the mountains of the Bernese Oberland. The centre of Thun is located on the Aare, a river which drains from the lake forming in parts islands with pleasant walkways.
I got there from the Camping Stuhlegg campsite in Krattingen ( The campsite provided a pass for travel around Lake Thun which includes free use of the bus around the lake as well as various discounts on tourist attractions.

It is located where the Aare flows out of Lake Thun (Thunersee), 30 kilometres (19 miles) south of Bern.
Lake Thun (German: Thunersee) is an Alpine lake in the Bernese Oberland in Switzerland named after the city of Thun, on its northern shore.
The lake was created after the last glacial period. After the 10th century, it split from Lake Brienz, before which the two lakes were combined, as Wendelsee (Lake Wendel).The culminating point of the lake's drainage basin is the Finsteraarhorn at 4,274 metres (14,022 ft) above sea level.
Lake Thun's approximate 2,500 km² (970 sq mi) catchment area frequently causes local flooding after heavy rainfalls. This occurs because the river Aare (German: Aare), which drains Lake Thun, has only limited capacity to handle the excess runoff. The lake is fed by water from Lake Brienz to the southeast, which is 6 metres (20 ft) higher than Lake Thun, and various streams in the Oberland, including the Kander.
