Timken Museum of Art, San Diego, California
The museum displays European old master paintings, sculptures, and tapestries. Supplementing the European holdings are collections of American paintings and Russian icons.
The groundwork for the museum was laid in 1951 when Walter Ames helped sisters Amy and Anne Putnam to form the nonprofit Putnam Foundation to own and manage their art collection. The sisters had settled in San Diego in the early 20th century and made donations to the San Diego Museum of Art in its early years. At first the Foundation loaned items from its collection to noteworthy museums across the United States. When the Timken Museum opened in 1965, the Putnam Foundation Collection provided its initial material and Walter Ames became its first director.

Timken Museum Recognized for Reducing Energy Use
On Tuesday, May 19th, U.S. EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy and San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer awarded the Timken Museum of Art with the 2014 EPA Battle of the Buildings Energy Star award. The museum, located in San Diego’s historic Balboa Park, was recognized for reducing its energy use by more than 50%, preventing more than 80 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions from being released into the environment. As part of its effort to reduce energy use, the museum converted 50-year-old light fixtures to advanced LED lighting and installed new timers, dimmers, and sensors. More than 5,500 buildings across the United States competed in the fifth annual Energy Star Battle of the Buildings: Team Challenge. Together, the competitors saved more than $50 million, cut their energy use by more than two billion kBtus, and prevented more than 250,000 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions—equal to the annual energy use of more than 37,000 homes.

San Diego Balboa Park
Balboa Park is a 1,200 acre (4.9 km²) urban cultural park in San Diego, California, United States named after the Spanish explorer Vasco Núñez de Balboa. The trees here were planted by the famous American gardener Kate Sessions. Placed in reserve in 1835, it is one of the oldest sites in the United States dedicated to public recreational usage. Besides open areas and natural vegetation, it contains a variety of cultural attractions including museums, theaters, gardens, shops and restaurants as well as the world-renowned San Diego Zoo. Balboa Park was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1977.[2][3] The park is managed and maintained by the City of San Diego Parks and Recreation Department.
Many of the park's attractions are along El Prado, a long, wide promenade running through the center of the park. Most of the buildings lining this street are in the Spanish Revival style, a richly ornamented eclectic mixture of Spanish and Latin American architecture.[2] Along this boulevard are many of the park's museums and cultural attractions, including the San Diego Museum of Man, the San Diego Museum of Art, the Museum of Photographic Arts, the San Diego Art Institute the San Diego Model Railroad Museum, the Natural History Museum, the San Diego Historical Society, Reuben H. Fleet Science Center, the Reflection Pond, the latticed Botanical Building (which is always free), the Bea Evenson Fountain, and Timken Museum of Art.
Adjacent to the promenade is the world famous San Diego Air & Space Museum.

Rembrandt in Southern California
In a collaborative effort between The Paul J. Getty Museum, Norton Simon Museum, The Hammer Museum, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Huntington, and The San Diego Museum of Art, Southern California brings together the third largest assemblance of Rembrandt paintings in the United States.
Through March 7, 2010, The San Diego Museum of Art's From Rembrandt's Studio: The Prints of Ferdinand Bol focuses on printmaking in Rembrandt's Holland and documents the efforts of the Dutch painter and printmaker Ferdinand Bol to arrive at his own style while working with Rembrandt, the greatest artist of his time.
The San Diego Museum of Art's exhibition is timed to coincide with Drawings by Rembrandt and His Pupils: Telling the Difference, a major exhibition on view at the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles December 8, 2009 through February 28, 2010. The exhibition, focusing on the artistic relationships between Rembrandt and his followers, will also provide the opportunity to study drawings by Rembrandt and Bol side-by-side.
Within San Diego, The San Diego Museum of Art joins forces with the Timken Museum of Art to present a strong combined showing of Rembrandt and Bol in Balboa Park.
Other related exhibitions on Rembrandt and his circle will be held at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles and the Norton Simon Museum in Pasadena.
