Japanese UNAGI EEL Restaurant in TOKYO | Roppongi, Tokyo [4K]
Fighting the Summer heat and fatigue with a beautiful Unagi Eel meal

***Update January 2018***
Manzen has unfortunately closed in December 2017.
Summer is here in Japan, it's really humid and hot outside, what is the best thing to do? Eat some amazing and delicious Unagi eels, known for being rich in Omega-A oils, which helps fight Natsubate (or summer fatigue in Japanese).
Today we head to Manzen, a small shop in the Roppongi Area of Tokyo. They have a Unagi-only menu, where you can choose between either a UNADON (bowl of rice topped with eel), UNAJYU (same as unadon but in a square box instead of bowl), and a TOKUSEN UNAJYU (a Unajyu with extra extra unagi on it).
The eels come from an eel farming company called Yamada Suisan, known for raising 100% organic eels. Compared to eels raised with chemicals and antibiotics, the meat is thick, tender and full of flavor.
The eels are prepared Kabayaki Style which means that they are butterflied, steamed, covered with tare sauce (a sweet thick soy sauce), and then broiled on a charcoal grill. The tare coating almost turns to caramel and gives a delicious sweetness to the unagi eel.
Eel dishes in Japan can be really pricey, but here at Manzen you can try delicious organic eels for less than 1000 yen (10$).

The FATTIEST RAMEN in Tokyo? - Jiro Ramen Mita Honten
We went to a Tokyo ramen staple: The famous Ramen Jiro! Please not that Ramen Jiro has nothing to do with the famous Jiro Sushi. Completely different, I am glad we got that clarified.
Jiro Ramen is a very special kind of ramen. Technically, it is a tonkotsu broth with shoyu added. But it is definitely completely different than any other tonkotsu ramen you ever had. It has lots of suspended fat in the soup and you can even ask for additional bits and pieces of fat to be added on top of your ramen. If you let the ramen sit for a while, the fat will slowly gather at the top of your soup and create a roughly thumb-thick film of fat that covers the whole bowl. It may well be the fattiest ramen you will ever eat it your life. But that is not all. Even with the regular option you will receive huge chunks of pork meat (chashu) that are best described as half meat and half fat. Apparently they are using tenderloin, but often you will have no idea from what part of the pig this chunky piece of fatty deliciousness came from. To top it all off, you will receive a generous heap of cut Chinese cabbage (hakusai) and bean sprouts (moyashi). And let’s not forget about the more thand handful of garlic that will be nicely added on top of your bowl, a bit to the side of the hakusai-moyashi tower.
The noodles deserve a whole video for themselves. They are thick, handmade
Jiro Ramen opened in 1968 and has since then developed a cult following among ramen lovers. There are over 30 Jiro Ramen locations, mainly in Tokyo, but with a few locations around Tokyo as well, like Yokohama and Chiba. The store in the video is the original store, called Mita Hon Ten 三田本店. It is not the one where the Jiro story started, they moved into this building in 1996. Legend has it that you have to work at this store first before you are allowed to open your own Ramen Jiro. While all Jiro Ramen locations have a bit of their own style, the main recipe and idea stays the same. Please don’t let the cleanliness (or lack of it) deter you from giving it a go. You will feel like you are covered in grease anyway, once you take your first couple of bites, so it does not matter that much.
As of making of this video, the regular ramen was only 600 Yen, and already provided a just barely edible size for normal people. If you are not used to the Jiro Ramen size, this is what you want to order. For 100 Yen extra you can add more meat to your bowl and for 200 Yen extra, you can actually double the amount of meat, which is ridiculous (-ly awesome!).
You can also get a bigger bowl for more ramen storage capabilities for little money extra and of course you also have the options to add extra meat to that as well. Unless you are someone of the size of Dway “The Rock” Johnson or a professional Sumo wrestler, I do not recommend going for any of the bigger options. You WILL regret it.
If all that was not enough, you can get additional free toppings with these magical words:
Free Toppings:
Ninniku (Garlic)
Ninniku Mashi (Extra garlic)
Ninnniku Mashi Mashi (Double extra garlic)
Ninniku Sukuname (just a little bit of garlic)
Yasai Mashi (Extra vegetables)
Yasai Mashi Mashi (Double extra vegetables)
Yasai Nashi (no vegetables)
Abura Mashi (Extra fat)
Abura Mashi Mashi (Double extra fat)
Karame (Extra soy sauce)
I highly recommend getting at least the Ninniku or Ninnuku Sukuname options, as the garlic REALLY enhances the flavor a lot. Plus you won’t have to defend yourselves from Japanese girls and guys throwing themselves at your at least for one evening, with that magic garlic breath.
Instead of them waiting for you to tell them about your garlic preferences, they might ask you directly. So if you hear “something something NINNIKU” you simply nod and say “HAI!”.
If you want to learn more about Ramen Jiro, I recommend the post from ramentokyo.com that goes deeply into detail what you should take care of, when you order and how to order.

Luxury Japanese Sukiyaki (すき焼き) at Yoshihashi (よしはし)
When I was in Tokyo I wanted some awesome Japanese Sukiyaki (すき焼き). Get all the details here:
Japanese sukiyaki (すき焼き) has always been a meal that I love, something that's just a great classic flavored dish that goes down well - I would call it a comfort dish. When I was in Tokyo I wanted to maximize the quality of food I could eat with my budget. So I did a lot of research and took my time to decided which restaurants to eat at, carefully. One day I really wanted to eat sukiyaki (すき焼き), and in an article in the Japan Times, I came across the suggestion for a restaurant known as Yoshihashi (よしはし). They mentioned this restaurant was extremely classy with prices to go with it - however, during the lunchtime, at one of the 12 bar seats, they offered an awesome lunch special a very affordable price.
You can be sure I was the first in line at Yoshihashi (よしはし), and my mind and tongue were thrilled to sample their high class sukiyaki (すき焼き). As soon as we arrive to the restaurant I could see just how prestigious it was - there wasn't even a sign on the restaurant. It was just straight clean wood and minimal design. There was nobody waiting in line like at many other restaurants in Tokyo, but rather it just had a feeling of elegance and prestige. So as soon as the clock struck their open hour, we headed in, and then took our seats at the bar to eat sukiyaki (すき焼き). There was no menu in English, but I did my best to just order the normal version of the dish, nothing extra and no other requests. The waitress in a kimono served us a cup of green to begin with, without a hint of a smile, not in an unfriendly way but more in an elegant way.
I wasn't sure if photos or videos were allowed inside Yoshihashi (よしはし) as at many Japanese restaurants they are concerned about such things. So I started off very calmly and tried to keep my voice extremely quiet despite my thrill of eating the awesome food. Our sukiyaki (すき焼き) came in about 10 minutes, and rather than being served in a hot pot style, it was served all assembled in a piping hot copper bowl. The main dish came with an egg and few small garnishes on the side. I whirled up my egg first and then started grabbing bites of the sukiyaki (すき焼き) and dipping them into the raw egg before eating. The beef, though not even their most high quality version, was outstanding. It was tender and literally just fell apart in my mouth leaving a flavor that was accented by soy sauce and rice wine. The flavors were delicate, but extremely smooth and I could taste the definite quality in their ingredients. We did manage to get enough of a video, but like I suspected, after a few minutes, the waitress did ask us not to take any more photos, so we stopped. Hopefully I captured enough of this awesome sukiyaki (すき焼き) meal at Yoshihashi (よしはし) to show a little picture of this awesome restaurant, the elegance, and the quality of the atmosphere and food.
Dining at Yoshihashi (よしはし) was really an amazing experience, and for just $20 it was well worth it. By the way, dinner can cost around $200 or more.
Yoshihashi (よしはし) Sukiyaki, Tokyo, Japan
Address: 1-5-25 Moto-Akasaka, Minato-ku, Tokyo
How to get there: Take the Tokyo Metro (Ginza Line) to Asakasa-mitsuke station, take exit B, and walk straight out of the exit until you come to your first street. Make a right and walk down the road until you come to a Honda store. Turn left and walk almost to the end of the road, but just before that, on your left hand side you'll see a little side street (it almost looks like an alley). Turn left and you'll see Yoshihashi on your right hand side at the end of the alley.
Open hours: 11:30 am -- 2 pm for lunch, Monday -- Saturday
Price: 2,100 JPY ($20), a well spent $20 for a marvelous sukiyaki lunch and an elegant Japanese dining experience

Gourmet Tokyo - JVT 2013-04
Fresh foodstuffs from all over Japan are readily available in Tokyo, and this is also a wonderful place to discover the nation's huge variety of regional cuisines. You don't need to travel to the farthest parts of these islands to try rare local delicacies or cooking styles - there's sure to be a specialist restaurant serving them somewhere in Tokyo. International cuisine is also readily available - part of Tokyo's charm is the ease with which you can dine on dishes from any part of the globe. All of Asia's famous cuisines are well represented, of course, but food from places as far off as Latin America and Africa is easy to find.
