Most Shady Place in Japan: Kabukicho, Shinjuku | Tokyo's Red Light District
Shinjuku is one of the most famous metropolitan cities in Tokyo. It is also a great place to grab some drinks with friends. However, there are a few areas that can be a little dangerous if you don't know what to look out for. Kabukicho, Shinjuku's Red Light District and home of the Robot Restaurant, is one of those areas. Kabukicho is an area filled with bars, restaurants, host and hostess clubs, as well as love hotels. Kabukicho's name came from the late 40's plan to build kabuki theater in that area, that while was not built, the name stuck. One of the dangerous things about Kabukicho is the kyaku-hiki or pulling in of customers by staff of hostess clubs and certain bars. There are a few clubs and bars that will overcharge for drinks, have hidden fees, or worst case scenario slip drugs into your drinks. While this is a rare occurance, it does happen and can cause some real problems for those that cannot speak Japanese. Kabukicho isn't all bad, but if you do end up there just make sure to be careful.

Tokyo Ramen Top 5 Must Eat at Shinjuku | Japanese Food Guide
Tokyo Ramen Guide - Top 5 Shinjuku Ramen Shops that you must-try if you come to Tokyo Japan. This Japanese Food Guide will visit 5 unique Ramen Shops in Shinjuku Tokyo. The 5 Shinjuku ramen shops we visit are Mensho San Francisco, Hosenka, Misoya Hachiro Shoten, Oreno Sora and Manrai. Each Ramen Shop in Shinjuku has its special ramen, whether it be miso ramen, shoyu ramen, tonkutsu ramen... and one of these is a Michelin star Ramen Shop in Tokyo. Some may consider these shops the best ramen in tokyo shinjuku and some maybe even the best ramen in japan.
5. Michelin star restaurant, Mensho San Francisco was originally opened in SF by Japanese Chef Tomoharu Shono, and was later reverse-imported to Tokyo. It’s hidden away on the 7th floor of Myload (mirodo) which is directly connected to the south exit of JR Shinjuku station. The shop presents a stylish cafe like interior attracting a larger female audience when compared to most ramen shops.
So I threw down on their A5 Black-hair wagyu beef shoyu ramen. The beef on top is from Kagoshima, silky smooth and extremely tender. The soup was made from Beef Genkotsu and Bonito flakes, creating a strong yet light flavor.

Hosenka is the second ramen shop produced by the owners Hayashida Ramen, which is another popular ramen shop in Shinjuku.
Misoya Hachiro Shoten is under the famous Ramen shop group, Nantsuttei which is famously known for its creamy tonkotsu broth soup. So without missing any flavorful notes, Misoya Hachiro Shoten’s also implements a creamy tonkotsu broth but in the miso variety.
Oreno Sora is a well-known ramen shop in Takadanobaba and this is their second shop. As for their menu, you can choose from 3 types - Kake buta soba, Tsuke buta soba, and Ae buta soba. This is Kake buta soba, literally translated to poured pork noodle, which is their regular standard ramen.
Manrai has been in business since 1961. I love the chic interior, reminds me of nice soba shop. It looks new but that’s because they moved location a few years back.

Shinjuku Experience - Kabukicho
Most of the things I learned about this area was from 李小牧 (Li Xiaomu) due to a book he wrote. He was a Chinese exchange student in Tokyo when he realized just how expensive life in Japan was for him at that time (1988). He then began to make money guiding tourists to establishments owned by Yakuza. There's a lot more to the story and I encourage you to do a bit of research on it when you have time. It was the first ever book in Chinese that I read from start to finish.
That said, this place is famous either way so it would've been on my list of places to visit yet having read about it beforehand made it even more interesting of an experience. Many restaurants and there's always things to do in the area.
Here's a quick article about Li Xiaomu

Tokyo Nightlife in Japan: TOP 30 Bars & Clubs

NEW: 7-Day Tokyo Pocket Itinerary
+ tons of Tokyo discount tickets
Tokyo is absolutely massive, with most popular nightlife hot spots located in Shibuya, Roppongi and Shinjuku districts. There are so many bars and nightclubs in Tokyo, you may wonder - Where do I start? Based on age, I would say Shibuya is for the Japanese youth/teenagers, Roppongi for the 25+ crowd and Shinjuku for the 35+ crowd.
Join the Tokyo Pub Crawl for just $24 + 20% discount!

Osaka Nightlife: TOP 20 Bars & Clubs (NEW)
The best possible thing you can do is join the Tokyo Pub Crawl on Friday in Roppongi and explore the nightlife of Shibuya on Saturday, those are the best days for an epic weekend in Tokyo.
If you make new friends in Tokyo, you will eventually be asked to be added to LINE. LINE is 'the' chat app in Japan, so if you do not have DATA on your phone during your stay, make sure to rent a dirt cheap pocket Wifi station at the airport. You can take these pocket Wifi stations all over the country and allow you to connect many of your devices. It even fits in your back pocket. Luckily, there is a 30% discount on Ninja pocket Wifi stations on Voyagin. I personally rent this device everytime when I visit Japan.
30% discount on Ninja Pocket Wifi rental, pickup at Airport
- just $6 USD per day!
(works all over Japan)
Nightlife in Japan is beyond incredible! The most popular nightclubs in Tokyo include Club Camelot in Shibuya, ELE Tokyo in Roppongi and Ageha Nightclub in Koto City. Ageha is the best nightclub in Japan, it will be an all night event since it is quite far from downtown but on a big event night you will be amazed by the gorgeous girls, cool dudes and a fantastic sound system. This mega club stays open until 5am and should be high on your Tokyo party bucket list.
Tokyo has the best quality of food in the world, that's why you have to visit at least one of its many izakaya's to try a bunch of authentic Japanese dishes, like Eihire (grilled stingray), Sakura (raw horse meat) and Yakitori (skewered chicken meat). Visit izakaya's Umiya or Sumire in Shibuya to enjoy these dishes.
After dinner join the Tokyo Pub Crawl on Friday @ 8pm which lasts until 12am (4 hours) during which you will visit 3 bars and 1 epic nightclub. Tokyo Pub Crawl is a great event to meet travelers, locals, expats and fully hosted in English. What many travelers do not realize is that English isn't commonly spoken at bars and nightclubs, thus the pub crawl is a great first start. The Tokyo Pub Crawl is ONLY $20 USD for 4 hours of fun, you truly cannot go wrong.
Studying a bit of Japanese and learning common phrases prior to your arrival will definitely make your nightlife experience in Japan 10x times better. I've made many incredible friends during my 6 visits to Japan and these have been some of my most treasured memories by being able to speak a bit of Japanese.
I truly have seen it all in Tokyo since my first Tokyo Nightlife experience back in 2007 - I've seen many bars and clubs come and go, that's why I decided to compile the best possible list for an epic party weekend in the capital of Japan.
Food in Tokyo is very important to me, I highly recommend you also watch my video: 10 MUST-EAT Foods in Tokyo. Also, do not forget to join the insane Mario Kart Tokyo experience which you can purchase with a 37% discount for Mario Kart Tokyo, speaking of discounts, there is a 34% discount for the Robot Restaurant as well.
34% OFF Robot Restaurant
In conclusion, the Tokyo Nightlife is one of world's finest but often travelers have no idea where to go or where to start. There seems to be a lot of confusion as to where the good parties are in town that's why I decided to create this master Tokyo nightlife list of all the things I learned about Tokyo during my 6x visits in the past decade.

Tokyo's Yakitori Alley: Shinjuku 360 ★ ONLY in JAPAN
One of Tokyo's most famous food alleys is at Shinjuku's West gate where loads of yakitori and motsunabe restaurants date back to the late 1940s. It's a street food paradise where you can see and smell the grilling and frying -- hungry, you will be!
In this episode, John and Shingo visit OMOIDE YOKOCHO (思い出横丁) or Memory Lane. Have a look around the alley and shops in 360 VR!
Food featured:
★ Yakitori / やきとり
★ Motsunabe / もつ鍋
★ Ramen / ラーメン
★ Yakisoba / 焼きそば (fried noodles in sauce)
★ Yukhoe (Korean based dish of seasoned raw beef with egg)
※ Best seen in 4K (2160p) / change the settings and watch with WIFI on for super clear views.
Omoide Yokocho is most famous for motsunabe (stewed giblets) and yakitori. Why?
THE HISTORY:
Following WWII, flour was a government regulated good and ramen / noodles weren't available to street stands. Instead, restaurant owners turned to non-regulated ingredients like pig and cow enthralls which were readily available and cheap from American servicemen occupying the city. From this, motsunabe (stewed giblets) and yakitori (from enthralls) were born.
It's much better tasting than it sounds! About 20 shops in Omoide Yokocho still serve motsunabe like they did back in the mid 1940s.
The alley retains its old Showa period charm despite all the modern new buildings surrounding it. It's like entering a world trapped in time and definitely worth a stop on anyone's trip to Tokyo.
This place used to be called Piss Alley but who'd want to eat at a place with piss in the name? It was changed to Memory Lane which is simply more appetizing although I do make a trip to the toilets to see if they are modern washlet style or totally Medieval holes int he ground.

Naoki From Tokyo Select: Top 3 Ramen in Shinjuku
With so many options of ramen in Tokyo, and especially in Shinjuku, how do you choose the best ramen?? Naoki, a local ramen expert, will introduce to you his top 3 ramen in Shinjuku, so you can see for yourself what all the fuss is about.
The main ingredients in RAMEN are not just noodles, soup, chashu, and menma, but also HEART and PASSION. The masters of these ramen restaurants poured their sweat and tears into these bowls; which is why they taste so salty. (warning: no actual sweat and tears)
Through our top 3 ramen shops, we'll also introduce the stories of three ramen masters, and tell you how they each came to be some of the most respected in a highly competitive scene. We hope you decide the restaurant to visit not just for the delicious taste, but also for the unique story that helps you understand its real roots!
