Naoshima Guide 2019
Nioshima FB Live Report:
in FB version:
Naoshima, a small island in Setonaikai (瀬戸内海) Seto inland sea. The whole island is like an Art object thanks to the Benesse Art-site Naoshima project since 1989. The Benesse holdings worked on this island Naoshima, and other two neighborhood islands; Teshima and Inushima. Contemporary art objects produce a great harmony with spectacular nature and architecture. There are 4 museums in this island as of 2019, and all of them are designed by the famous architect, Ando Tadao. The biggest one is Benesse House Museum. This museum (show the detail in caption) has works in outside and inside the museum. The seaside field is free entry and you’ll encounter interesting objects and enjoy the open feeling. Well, bicycle entry is prohibited in this premise though.
Art Museums:
- Benesse House Museum
- Chichuu museum
- RiFan museum
- Ando-tadao museum
All museums except Benesse House Museum are close on Mondays, so please be careful. Bicycle shops in Miyanoura are open but Honmura area’s is close, so please be careful.
So how to get there? From Osaka, go to Okayama by JR or JR bullet train, then from Okayama, go to Uno station by local train. It will take about 1hr. From Uno station to Uno port is very close, less than 3 mins walk. There are two ports in Naoshima for tourists. Miyaura, the bigger one and Honmura. Honmura port is only for passenger jetty. Ferries for Miyaura port only. The ferry ride is quite comfy, as there is wifi and open space deck, and clean toilets. Even vending machines are there. even though it’s just a 20 mins ride. Pats are allowed to board, but need to put into a cage.
Once you arrived at Miyaura port, I’ll recommend to rent a bicycle. there are some rental bike shops. Electric-aid bicycle is also available.
There are local public busses and charter buses as well.
Here is the island map. Here is the Miyaura port, and here is Honmura area, and there is an Ie-project (Art House Project) that artists use local empty houses to exhibit their artworks. You’ll enjoy Japanese local street scenery and outdoor art objects too. Ando museum is in this area too.
You’ll feel the beautiful nature and unique art works! Enjoyable moment guaranteed in this island :)

Free download : Cherry Blossom Photo Guide eBook Tokyo No Sakura
Cherry Blossom Photo Guide eBook Tokyo No Sakura: Although widely spread in the Northern hemisphere, the sakura tree is nowhere as important as it is in Japan, where it holds the status of national flower. The abrupt transience of its blossoms, the delicate and ephemeral beauty of its flower has led Japan to associate the sakura tree with mortality and is therefore richly symbolic. The sakura flower can indeed be found in many aspects of the daily life in Japan: from the 100 yen coins, to dishware as well as on Kimonos.
All sakura trees are not made equal and, believe it or not, there are 200 different types of sakura trees in Japan! They differ by the flowering period, number of petals and each variety features flowers with a unique shape and colour, which ranges from white – often seen in Tokyo – to a deep pink. There is even a more yellowish variety known as the ukon family of sakura.

Sakura Cherry Blossom Festival 2013 @ Osaka Japan [ Hanami ] 花見
Kema Sakuranomiya Park is located in the four kilometers between Tenma-bashi Bridge and the Kema Lock upstream on the Okawa-Bridge. With some 4,800 cherry blossom trees that seem to go on seemingly without end, this is an excellent place for viewing cherry blossoms in a style only to be had in Osaka, the Capital on the Water. Pleasure boats often called water buses leave frequently from Hachikenya Port at Tenma-bashi Bridge, providing a water-bound way to enjoy the cherry blossoms.
Cinematic Japan - Kitakyushu
Explore Kitakyushu and experience the contrast of movement within this beautiful area in Japan.
Kitakyushu is the northernmost city on Japan’s Kyushu Island. Kokura Castle is surrounded by Katsuyama Park, known for its spring cherry blossoms. Riverwalk Kitakyushu is a shopping mall by the Murasaki River. Northeast, Moji Port Retro Area has 1900s buildings, like the red-brick Moji Customs Building and striped Old Mitsui OSK Line Building. Vintage locomotives are displayed at the Kyushu Railway History Museum (Wikipedia).

Japan Offers Cherry Trees To People of San Diego and Port of San Diego
Thirty-one pink cloud cherry trees that the Consulate-General of Japan in Los Angeles recently gifted to the citizens of San Diego now grace the San Diego waterfront, just south of the USS Midway Museum, and on Shelter Island near the Yokohama Friendship Bell.
Board of Port Commissioners Chairman Lou Smith introduced Japanese Consul General Jun Niimi at the cherry tree dedication ceremony on Thursday, March 29, 2012. Smith said that when visitors walk along the downtown waterfront and enjoy the solitude of the Friendship Bell, they will be reminded of the Japanese generosity and friendship. Niimi said the trees will become a lasting symbol of the enduring relationship between Japan and the United States.

Yokohama, Japan, 100 years ago 横浜
Yokohama was the first place I visited in Japan in 1953 (see the vid of my cruise from Hong Kong to Japan), so did many travelers before me when their cruise ship arrived. They sent picture postcards like these to their friends. They show us a world that has disappeared completely.
