Tokyo City View | 45th Floor | Metropolitan Govt. Building |
The Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building in Shinjuku is often visited by tourists for its free observation decks which provide good panoramic views of Tokyo and beyond. The 243 meter tall building has two towers, and each houses an observatory at a height of 202 meters. It had been the tallest building in Tokyo until it was overtaken by the Midtown Tower in 2007.
With favorable weather conditions, famous landmarks such as Mount Fuji, the Tokyo Skytree, Tokyo Tower, Meiji Shrine and the Tokyo Dome can be seen from the observatories. Each observatory has a cafe and a souvenir shop. The North Observatory remains open later at night, making it a popular spot to catch night views of the city.
The towers and the surrounding buildings contain offices and the assembly hall of the metropolitan government of Tokyo. Visitors are therefore subjected to bag checks prior to boarding the elevators as part of the security measures.
On the second story of the building, there is a tourist information center with lots of information about Tokyo, but also about various other tourist destinations across Japan. Periodically, the center holds fairs during which local products from selected regions are introduced and put on sale.

Free Observation Deck | Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building | Japanese Pancakes | Tokyo | Japan
Do you like free things? So do we! That's one reason we chose to visit the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building in downtown Tokyo.
We spent the day walking around the streets of Tokyo and wanted to end the day by looking out toward the city. One of our favorite ways to do this is to get to the top of a big building. One of the best times of day we have found is close to sundown. Go early enough that you can still see the city in the day light, but close enough to sundown (for sunset) that they will begin turning on the lights. You get two very different experiences.
After looking out over Tokyo we went into down for some food. Akane took me to a place where she could make some Japanese Pancakes. Let me assure you, they are very different than the pancakes we are used to in North America. Although I do like ours here, the ones there were delicious! So much flavor to them.
Although our after dinner plans (going to karaoke) fell through, we did make up for it with beer!
