How to Use the Tokyo Subway | JAPAN TRAVEL GUIDE
In this video, I show you everything you need to know in order to use the Tokyo Metro System effectively. It can be complex and intimidating if it's your first time in Tokyo, so hopefully this video will simplify it for you, from buying tickets to finding your destination. Don't be scared of Tokyo Subway! It's probably one of the world's most efficient transportation systems, and can get you anywhere! This is the first video of my Japan Guide series, so stay tuned for more tips and tricks for traveling/moving to Tokyo, Japan!
I have people asking how to calculate their fare for a specific trip, you can use Google Maps which tells you the single ticket fare, so you will pay 5-10Yen less if you are using an IC card. You can also use Tokyo Metro's calculator which tells you all different fares but only available for Tokyo Metro lines (so excluding TOEI/JR lines):

TIPS FOR SAVING $$$
1. Stick to Tokyo Metro lines only - these 9 lines should get you to all touristic destinations (some may require slightly longer transit time, but it won't be much longer than the more expensive route)
2. Avoid buses if you are just traveling - they are expensive and doesn't provide free transfer to metro
3. Buy a combo pass if you arrive from Narita or Haneda Airport, they can save you a lot of money. More info:
4. Group together sights that can only be accessed by subway within the time period limited by the 24h/48h/72h metro pass. Go to sights that are accessible by foot on other days

Japan Trip 2013 Tokyo Shibuya Station South exit Bus terminal 05
Shibuya Station
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Shibuya Station (渋谷駅 Shibuya-eki?) is a railway station in Shibuya, Tokyo, Japan, operated jointly by East Japan Railway Company (JR East), Keio Corporation, Tokyu Corporation, and Tokyo Metro. With 2.4 million passengers on an average weekday in 2004, it is the fourth-busiest commuter rail station in Japan (after Shinjuku, Ikebukuro, and Ōsaka / Umeda) handling a large amount of commuter traffic between the center city and suburbs to the south and west.
Lines
JR East
Saikyō Line / Shōnan-Shinjuku Line (Yamanote Freight Line) - also used by Narita Express trains
Yamanote Line - unusual platform configuration, with both train lines on the same side (east) of platform
Private railways
Keiō Inokashira Line - terminus
Tōkyū Den-en-toshi Line - through service with Hanzōmon Line
Tōkyū Tōyoko Line - terminus
Subways
Tokyo Metro Ginza Line - terminus
Tokyo Metro Hanzōmon Line - through service with Tōkyū Den-en-toshi Line
Tokyo Metro Fukutoshin Line - terminus (through service to Tōkyū Tōyoko Line beginning in fiscal 2012)
Note that the Hanzōmon Line and the Fukutoshin Line are directly connected (without passing through ticket gates), but they are not directly connected to the Ginza Line. There is no direct connection between the two Tōkyū lines either.
Station layout
The main station building is occupied by a Tokyu department store. The Tokyo Metro Ginza Line, originally built and operated by a Tokyu keiretsu company, uses platforms on the third floor. The JR lines and Tōkyū Tōyoko Line use parallel platforms on the second floor, while the Tokyo Metro Hanzōmon Line and Tōkyū Den-en-toshi Line share platforms underground, and the Keiō Inokashira Line uses platforms on the second floor of the Shibuya Mark City building to the west of the main station complex. The Tokyo Metro Fukutoshin Line, opened in 2008 is located on the fifth basement under Meiji Street, to the east of the Tōyoko Line station. The Tōyoko Line will be connected to the Fukutoshin Line station to allow through service between the two lines starting in March 2013.
There are six exits from the main JR/Tokyu/Tokyo Metro complex. The Hachikō Exit (ハチ公口 Hachikō-guchi?) on the west side, named for the nearby statue of the dog Hachikō and adjacent to Shibuya's famous scramble crossing, is a particularly popular meeting spot. The Tamagawa Exit (玉川口 Tamagawa-guchi?) on the west side leads to the Keiō Inokashira Line station.
On November 17, 2008, a mural by Tarō Okamoto, The Myth of Tomorrow, depicting a human figure being hit by an atomic bomb, was unveiled in its new permanent location at the station, in the connecting passage to the Keiō Inokashira Line entrance.

In this regard, Shibuya is one of Tokyo's most colorful and busy districts, packed with shopping, dining and nightclubs serving swarms of visitors that come to the district everyday.
Shibuya is a center for youth fashion and culture, and its streets are the birthplace to many of Japan's fashion and entertainment trends. Over a dozen major department store branches can be found around the area catering to all types of shoppers. I was planning to eat at the convenience store but decided to try Ichiran ramen instead. I didn’t include in the vlog some other stuff like going to Life Supermarket, Mandarake for my husband’s toy, Sansui for my dad’s fishing accessory, and Daiso.

Shibuya, Tokyo - Letters from Japan
Shibuya is especially known for its shopping and trend-setting culture in young fashion. The crossing at the Hachiko exit is a favorite among regular and first-time visitors.
Shibuya station is served by multiple train and subway lines, so the best route will greatly depend on where you're coming from within Tokyo.
Check Tokyo Metro's web site ( to see which train or subway line works best for you. I also recommend Hyperdia (
For researching different activities to do in Shibuya beyond shopping and dining, check out the Shibuya City Tourism Association ( They also have a green bus located outside of the Hachiko exit with staff on site to help you find whatever you're looking for.

Narita Airport to Tokyo - Complete Japan Travel Guide
Here are tips to get to and from Narita Airport. I've lived in Japan for almost 15 years now and this advice is based on all my experiences. Hope this video helps.
Check out more info at
//Timelines//
0:12-Intro
0:13-1:07 Overview of transportation options to Narita Airport
The options are...
-Express Train - Narita Express and Keisei Skyliner
-Local Bus
-Bus - LCC and limousine
-Taxi
Basically LCC buses are the cheapest way to go, and express trains and limousine are about the same price.
1:08-1:28 Overview of express train
-Narita Express is great for people staying in south west area including Shinjuku, Shibuya and Tokyo.
-Keisei Skyliner is great for people staying in north east area including Ueno and Nippori.
1:29-2:52 How to ride the express train
-From the Airport:
When you arrive at Narita Airport, go to B1. You will find RED Narita Express ticket booth and machines on the right and BLUE Skyliner ticket booth and machines on the left.
-To the Airport:
N'EX - Go to your nearest JR station to buy ticket. You can buy tickets even though express train does not stop at your nearest station.
Skyliner - Go to Nippori or Ueno to buy tickets.
2:52-4:05 Tips on express train
Tip 1 - Arrive to the station 15-20 minutes early (on return)
There is always a long line at the ticket booth and the platform to get on the train might be quite far from the gate so make sure to arrive early.
Tip 2 - Use ticket machine when in hurry
Usually you don't need to wait in line for ticket machines to buy a ticket and takes only about 5 minutes. Consider this as an option when you are in hurry.
Tip 3 - Sit at the front of the car
Luggage compartment is located at the front and the end of the each car of express train. People get stuck when getting the luggage upon arrivals. It is stressful to worry about if you can get out or not so it's good to sit at the front. (the end is ok too.)
Note: About tickets
when you buy tickets by credit card, you will receive 3 tickets - an express train ticket, receipt, and credit card receipt. You need to show only the train ticket to the train attendant.
CORRECTION: X 4 ticket → ◉ 3 tickets
(I was with my gf so we had 4 tickets.)
4:05 - 5:22 Bus
- LCC (Tokyo Shuttle and Access Narita) can take you to/from Tokyo and Ginza Station.
- Limousine Bus runs to/from major hotels.
5:23 - 6:05 How to take the bus
-Limousine Bus and Tokyo Shuttle - At Narita Airport on the first floor, you can find ticket machines and man booth.
-Access Narita - All you need to do is go to the train stop and pay on the bus. No reservation needed.

Shibuya was historically the site of a castle in which the Shibuya family resided from the 11th century through the Edo period. Following the opening of the Yamanote Line in 1885, Shibuya began to emerge as a railway terminal for southwestern Tokyo and eventually as a major commercial and entertainment center.
The village of Shibuya was incorporated in 1889 by the merger of the villages of Kami-Shibuya, Naka-Shibuya and Shimo-Shibuya within Minami-Toshima County (Toyotama County from 1896). The village covered the territory of modern-day Shibuya Station area as well as the Hiroo, Daikanyama, Aoyama and Ebisu areas. Shibuya became a town in 1909. The town of Shibuya merged with the neighboring towns of Sendagaya (which included the modern Sendagaya, Harajuku and Jingumae areas) and Yoyohata (which included the modern Yoyogi and Hatagaya areas) to form Shibuya Ward of Tokyo City in 1932. Tokyo City became Tokyo Metropolis in 1943, and the present-day special ward was established on March 15, 1947.
The Tokyu Toyoko Line opened in 1932, making Shibuya a key terminal between Tokyo and Yokohama, and was joined by the forerunner of the Keio Inokashira Line in 1933 and the forerunner of the Tokyo Metro Ginza Line in 1938. One of the best-known stories concerning Shibuya is the story of Hachikō, a dog who waited on his late master at Shibuya Station every day from 1923 to 1935, eventually becoming a national celebrity for his loyalty. A statue of Hachikō was built adjacent to the station, and the surrounding Hachikō Square is now the most popular meeting point in the area.
During the occupation of Japan, Yoyogi Park was used as a housing compound for U.S. personnel known as Washington Heights. The U.S. military left in 1964, and much of the park was repurposed as venues for the 1964 Summer Olympics. The ward itself served as part of the athletics 50 km walk and marathon course during the 1964 games.[1]
Shibuya has achieved great popularity among young people since the early 1980s. There are several famous fashion department stores in Shibuya. Shibuya 109 is a major shopping center near Shibuya Station, particularly famous as the origin of the kogal subculture. Called Ichi-Maru-kyū, which translates as 1–0–9 in Japanese, the name is actually a pun on that of the corporation that owns it — Tōkyū (which sounds like 10–9 in Japanese; this is numerical substitution, a form of goroawase wordplay). The contemporary fashion scene in Shibuya extends northward from Shibuya Station to Harajuku, where youth culture reigns; Omotesandō, the zelkova tree- and fashion brand-lined street; and Sendagaya, Tokyo's apparel design district.
During the late 1990s, Shibuya also became known as the center of the IT industry in Japan. It was often called Bit Valley in English,[citation needed] a pun on both Bitter Valley, the literal translation of Shibuya, as well as bit, the computer term for binary digits.
In 2015 Shibuya passed a local ordinance granting same-sex couples the right to partnership certificates; this made it the first place in Japan — or anywhere in East Asia — to recognize same-sex partnerships.[2]

- HACHIKO
Hachikō (ハチ公, November 10, 1923 – March 8, 1935) was an Akita dog born on a farm near the city of Ōdate, Akita Prefecture, Japan. He is remembered for his remarkable loyalty to his owner, for whom he continued to wait for over nine years following his death. Hachikō is known in Japanese as chūken Hachikō (忠犬ハチ公) faithful dog Hachikō, hachi meaning eight and kō meaning affection. During his lifetime, the dog was held up in Japanese culture as an example of loyalty and fidelity. Well after his death, he continues to be remembered in worldwide popular culture, with statues, movies, books, and appearances in various media.
- DEATH:
Last known photo of Hachikō - pictured with his owner's partner Ueno Yaeko (front row, second from right) and station staff in mourning in Tokyo on March 8, 1935.
Hachikō died on March 8, 1935 at the age of 11. He was found on a street in Shibuya. In March 2011, scientists finally settled the cause of death of Hachikō: the dog had both terminal cancer and a filaria infection. There were also four yakitori skewers in Hachikō's stomach, but the skewers did not damage his stomach or cause his death.
- LEGACY:
After his death, Hachikō's remains were cremated and his ashes were buried in Aoyama Cemetery, Minato, Tokyo where they rest beside those of Hachikō's beloved master, Professor Ueno. Hachikō's fur, which was preserved after his death, was stuffed and mounted and is now on permanent display at the National Science Museum of Japan in Ueno, Tokyo.
