Crafts and damascene processing
TOLEDO-GOLD,
Ornamentation technique called damascene metal is of great antiquity, being the favorite decoration for weapons and armor from time immemorial. It basically consists of embedding a precious metal such as gold or 24K .925 fine silver thousandths other current metal such as steel, copper, iron, bronze, etc. This combination of different metals as a result provides a great beauty of real metal marquetry.
There are numerous examples in museums such as the Metropolitan of New York, the Army Museum and the Royal Armouries to the Royal Palace of Madrid … where we can find swords, armor, guns, saddles and so on of damask elements.
Being a form of oriental inspiration and craftsmanship behind the Arab presence in Spain for seven centuries, it is logical that this technique sink in deep among Spanish craftsmen, who learned and maintained until today, mainly in the city of Toledo, undoubtedly because of its ancient tradition of swordmaking, manufacture of armor and works on metal.

ESPADERÍA SUÁREZ - Toledo
Artisan sword making in Toledo Spain.
There are some artisans in Toledo who, as in the past, still make quality swords by hand.
An artisan in a sword making shop explains how a sword blade is created.
Steel is cut from steel plates that come in various thicknesses. The choice of thickness depends on what kind of blade is needed.
The plate is placed in red/ white hot flames.
When removed, it becomes soft enough to be hammered into the form of a blade.
The shaped form is now heated at extremely high temperatures determined by the kind of steel it is.
After the correct temperature is reached, the blade is submerged in oil.
This process makes the metal extremely strong, but the contracting molecules make it very fragile.
Next, the blade is heated up to 400 degrees C and then submerged in water.
It is now rendered flexible and can be bent without breakage never losing its original shape.
The blade is sanded, polished and engraved before finally being attached to the sword handle.
