The changing of the guard ceremony is performed every hour by the Presidential Guard in front of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. The tomb is located in the area between Syntagma Square (Greek: Πλατεία Συντάγματος) and the parliament building. The ceremony is much more elaborate on Sundays and official holidays and includes elaborate traditional dress and an army band.

The Hymn to Liberty or Hymn to Freedom(Greek: Ύμνος εις την Ελευθερίαν) is a poem written by Dionýsios Solomós in 1823 that consists of 158 stanzas, which is used as the national anthem of Greece and Cyprus. It was set to music by Nikolaos Mantzaros, and is the longest national anthem in the world by length of text. In 1865, the first three stanzas (and later the first two) officially became the national anthem of Greece and, from 1966, also that of the Republic of Cyprus.

The Evzones, or Evzoni (Greek: Εύζωνες, Εύζωνοι), is the name of several historical elite light infantry and mountain units of the Greek Army. Today, it refers to the members of the Presidential Guard an elite ceremonial unit that guards the Greek Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
Though the Presidential Guard is a primarily ceremonial unit, all Evzones are volunteers drawn from the Hellenic Army's Infantry Corps. Prospective Evzones are initially identified at the Infantry Recruit Training Centres during Basic Training; there is a minimum height requirement of 1.95 m (6' 5) to join.
The unit is known for its uniform, which has evolved from the clothes worn by the klephts who fought the Ottoman occupation of Greece. The most visible item of this uniform is the fustanella, a kilt-like garment. Their distinctive dress turned them into a popular image for the Greek soldier, especially among foreigners.
