Tongariro Northern Circuit - New Zealand Great Walks - New Zealand's Information Network
This guide has been compiled by the New Zealand Information Network to introduce you to these crown jewels of our tramping track network. New Zealand's most popular tramping/trekking tracks and a river journey are collectively known as the Great Walks.
Enter into the heart of a vast moonscape of tortured rock that makes up Tongariro, one of the world's first national parks (1887).
The Tongariro Northern Circuit is a 41 km alpine tramp, which winds around Mts Ngauruhoe and Tongariro, and offers superb views of Ruapehu, the highest mountain in the North Island. The tramp includes the Tongariro Crossing, which is rated as 'The Best One-Day Walk in New Zealand', because of its dramatic volcanic formations, glacial valleys, craters and lava flows.
The track is normally walked in a clockwise direction from Whakapapa Village over 5 days, staying in 4 well-spaced huts, or nearby campsites. Great Walks passes can be purchased from the visitor centres at Whakapapa, Turangi or Ohakune before entering the track.
The track starts behind the Grand Chateau in Whakapapa, and winds through red tussock, mountain hebe and beech forest to the Mangatepopo Hut. Day 2 involves a fascinating walk up the lava flows of the Mangatepopo Valley past Soda Springs and up to the South Crater. From here there is an option to climb Mt Ngauruhoe, by following a poled route to the base of the mountain and then zigzagging up to the summit (2 hours return).
Continuing on to the Red Crater you catch whiffs of sulphur in the air. There is a great photo opportunity here as you look down on the brilliant Emerald Lakes and the Blue Lake, which are old explosion craters filled with mineral-laden water. The track then leads across tortuous terrain to the Ketetahi Hut, near an active hot spring area.
On Day 3 a steep descent into a volcanic wonderland of lava formations and waterfalls leads to Oturere Hut, and Day 4 involves numerous stream crossings on the way to Waihohonu Hut. The final day sees a climb to the Tama Saddle and Tama Lakes before passing the Taranaki Falls and returning to the Whakapapa Village.
The Tongariro Northern Circuit offers an intimate view of an active volcanic region, and visions of the contorted landscapes will remain with you for a long time.

Journey into Mordor on New Zealand's Tongariro Northern Circuit Great Walk! This track takes you up an active volcano and through the lava flows of Mt Doom (Mount Ngauruhoe). We walked it in October with 70km/hr winds and some poor visibility which just made it more interesting! :)

Tongariro Northern Circuit Hike with Alpine Crossing - New Zealand Great Walk #3
January 7 – 11, 2020 – TONGARIRO NORTHERN CIRCUIT
We ere supposed to have started the walk on a Sunday, but the Alpine crossing was closed on Monday due to extremely high winds (80 to 90 km/hr) and heavy rain. As such, we delayed our start until Tuesday, and were so glad we did. In total, we spent $132 NZ ($89 US) for the two tent sites and one hut night. The hike itself is free, as is parking at the visitor centre if you have booked DOC camps and/or huts.
From alpine herbfields to forests, and tranquil lakes to desert-like plateaux, we journey through a landscape of stark contrasts with amazing views at every turn in this dual World Heritage site. As the circuit winds past Mount Tongariro and Mount Ngauruhoe, we were be dazzled by dramatic volcanic landscapes and New Zealand’s rich geological and ancestral past.
To the north is Lake Taupo, to the east the rugged Kaimanawa range. On a clear day we ever caught a glimpse of Mount Taranaki on the west coast.
The Tongariro Northern Circuit can be hiked in either direction but we went clockwise. The track is well marked and signposted, but some sections were very steep, some rough and a few even muddy.
Day 1: Whakapapa Village to Mangatepopo Camp; 9.89 km / 6.15mi; 03:15.
Our journey begins by making our way across the eroded plains of the Tongariro volcanic complex, a series of explosion craters and volcanic cones and peaks. Venturing through a landscape carved out by ancient lava flows and stream beds, we were dwarfed by the massive cone of Mount Ngauruhoe on our right. For the final hour the track led us around Pukekaikiore, one of Tongariro’s older steam vents, before reaching Mangatepopo Hut.
Day 2: Mangatepopo Camp to Oturere Camp; 12.56 km / 7.81; 06:07.
Here we join the popular Tongariro Alpine Crossing on the second day, crossing remnants of lava flows and climbing steeply up Te Arawhata to the expansive Red Crater. We were dazzled by the aptly named Emerald Lakes (Ngā Rotopounamu), and the equally amazing Blue Lake (Te Wai Whakaata o te Rangihīroa). These lakes are tapu or sacred to Ngāti Tuwharetoa, so we were not allowed to touch the water. After crossing the peak we parted from the Alpine Crossing track and descend into Oturere valley passing through a landscape of other-worldly lava forms before reaching Oturere Hut.
Day 3: Oturere Camp to Waihohonu Camp; 8.77 km / 5.45 mi; 03:23.
The circuit continues through this unique environment. After crossing stream valleys and open gravel fields, the track gradually sidles around the foothills of Ngauruhoe, before descending into a beech-forested valley and crossing a branch of the Waihohonu Stream. A steep climb took us to the top of the ridge where we got a vista of the Waihohonu Hut.
Day 4: Waihohonu Camp to Whakapapa Village; 16.01 km / 9.95 mi; 04:30.
Our final day was spent following the Waihohonu Stream as we head west towards Tama saddle, cradled by the towering Mount Ngauruhoe on our right and Mount Ruapehu on our left. We then pass the tumbling Taranaki Falls before returning to our starting point at Whakapapa Village.

Distance: 47.23 km / 29.36 mi
Elevation Gain: 1750 meters / 5742 feet
Time: 17:15 (84% moving)

Tongariro Alpine Crossing - Living a Kiwi Life - Ep. 29
The Tongariro Alpine Crossing in New Zealand is incredible! We made it even better with a summit of Mount Ngaurahoe (Mt Doom from Lord of the Rings) and ventured onto the Tongariro Northern Circuit Great Walk to stay one night at the Oturere hut (a few kms off the Alpine Crossing track) turning the Crossing into a 2-day walk and maximizing our adventure. If you have gear to stay overnight this is an amazing option to consider. The section between the Alpine Crossing and the Oturere hut is one of the coolest parts of the Tongariro Northern Circuit (because it looks like Mordor). Not to be taken lightly the Alpine Crossing is long at 19.4km and is a lot of up and down. Bring lots of water! Add 3 hours if you plan to tackle Mount Doom, which we highly recommend :)

An awesome overnight trip in Tongariro National Park, New Zealand, with good mates. We walk the Waihohonu track to Waihohonu Hut, then continue to Oturere Hut, camping out with views to the mountains. My first tramp with the new camera so still getting used to manual shooting.

Tongariro Northern circuit is one of the Great Walks in New Zealand and it is truly amazing landscape to walk through. The path is well marked and signposted, but steep and muddy in places. You can walk in either direction from Whakapapa Village. Once you have seen this video you know why it is definitely worth the effort! In this short video I show you the highlights of the volcanic heart of the North Island.

Mt Doom Trek - Tongariro Alpine Crossing (Tongariro National Park)
The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is one of those must walks of New Zealand. However being New Zealand most winter visitors miss the chance of doing it, because of weather conditions on the mountains. We nearly were one of those visitors who never got a chance to do the crossing. But on my last full day and one of my friend Lucy's last days, the rain cleared and the crossing was open. So on the morning 30th, September we were picked up early from our hostel and dropped at Mangatepopo Carpark, at the start of the Alpine Crossing. The crop was also the film set of Mt Doom from the Lord of the Rings films and Mt Ngauruhoe is nicknamed as Mt Doom.
The crossing is a one way 19.4km trek across the alpine pass of Mt Tongariro and Mt Ngaurahoe. The Department of Conservation class the walk as an advanced trek and recommended between 5hr and 30mins to 7hr 30mins. It took us 6 hours to complete the crossing.
So the route starts at the Mangatepopo Carpark and heads towards Mt Ngaurahoe along the Mangatepopo valley. The first section to the devils staircase is fairly flat, with a small incline. The path is well marked out in the valley and includes a couple of boardwalks. Along with this section, you can see all three of the largest peaks in the national park, Mt Ruapehu, Mt Ngaurahoe and Mt Tongariro. You can also see the glacial landscape that formed the valley and the lava flows that have filled it. Then finally before you start the devils staircase you can see and smell the soda springs. Next head up the step Devils Staircase to the top of the South Crater. Once you arrive at the top, you are able to look back down onto the Mangatepopo Valley and see the signpost for the path to the summit of Mt Ngaurahoe.
The next section has you crossing the South Crater and heading up the ridge towards the summit of the Red Crater. The ridge climb to the top of the Red Crater was steep and the ground was loose. But once you arrive at the top of the Red Crater you have a fantastic view, looking back down towards South Crater, Mt Ngaurahoe and Mangatepopo Valley. Here you can head left to the summit of Mt Tongariro. Continuing along the alpine crossing, you will up onto the highest point of the Red Crater's rim and then back down to the Central Crater and Emerald Lakes. Going down the ground is extremely loose and has you sliding down for part of the way. The Emerald lakes are beautiful clear blue water filled craters or when we crossed mostly iced covered pools. At the bottom of the Central Crater, you also meet by another junction to the Oturere Hut and the Tongariro Northern Circuit. But here, continue straight ahead toward the Blue Lake and Ketetahi Carpark.
The next section heads across the Central Crater which for us was covered in 4 feet of snow/ice which was a bit different. Then the path heads up for the final climb to the Blue Lake. Again for us, it was covered in ice. Next couple of hours has you heading down off the mountain, with beautiful views of the lakes around Mt Tongariro. So you can see Lake Rotoaira and behind that lake, New Zealand's largest lake, Taupo. Also, you see Te Maari Craters and Ketetahi Springs and about half way, Ketetahi hut which is used as a toilet stop and shelter if the weather turns, but I would not fancy staying there as the roof full of holes from past eruption's falling debris. The last section of the route is easy and before you know it you're into the forest below and back at the car park, where we were picked up for us to be returned to our hostel.
Also remember to take the correct equipment and be prepared for the worst. Upon the mountain, the weather conditions can change quickly and not be forecasted. So always only do what you can and what you're prepared for. For the winter season, the crossing can only be done with guides. When we did the crossing the Mt Tongariro and Mt Ngaurahoe summit were closed because there was still to much ice and snow on the mountains. So look up the currently information and warnings. The best place is to visit the Department of Conservation website:

Tongariro Northern Circuit, New Zealand
The Tongariro Northern Circuit, one of the New Zealand Great Walks, is a three to four day tramp in Tongariro National Park, New Zealand. The hike includes the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, a day's march that incorporates the Northern Circuit's most stunning scenery. The complete trail forms a 50 kilometres long loop trail that circumnavigates Mount Ngauruhoe. Approximately 7,000 trampers complete the walk each year. This compares to the approximately 25,000 who walk only the Tongariro Crossing section.
Things To Do Near Tongariro National Park & Taupo
National Park offers the best access to the Tongariro Crossing, one of the greatest one day walks in New Zealand. If you would rather relax and take in the stunning scenery, The Park travellers' lodge offers great facilities including mountain bike hire to take on some of the famous tracks close by.
Be sure to stop in at Blue Duck Lodge for a range of a unique New Zealand farm experience. Blue Duck Lodge has everything from axe throwing, eco tours on a 4x4, kayaking, clay bird shooting and amazing bush tucker.
Taupo has some of the best sky diving in the country, head to Skydive Taupo to take in the central North Island from above.
Raglan is a surf mecca in New Zealand, Karioi Lodge and Raglan Surf School offer lessons for beginners to advanced.
