TONGASS NATIONAL RAINFOREST HIKE | KETCHIKAN | ALASKA | USA
The offshore excursion that I did at our first stop, Ketchikan, was the Tongass National Rainforest Hike. This activity was roughly 2 hours long and can be done by people from all walks of life.
Please note: There are different hikes at different stops and I cannot comment on who can or cannot do those hikes as I personally didn't do them. Please follow the guide suggested by the staff for those.

Tongass National Forest| Northernmost Rainforest in the World | Love Nature
We filmed this amazing footage in the Tongass National Forest, the largest protected rainforest in the United States and the northernmost rainforest in the world. The forest includes most of Alaska’s panhandle near the top of the earth.
In this short nature documentary, we explore how it’s possible that a rainforest exists this close to the top of the Earth. In a place once covered in ice, not much soil was left behind after the glaciers receded. But trees with a rare ability to pump nitrogen into the ground supply life to the rainforest. Drenched in fog, mist, and rain, precipitation hangs heavy in the air. Alaska’s biodiversity of plant life is living testament to the health of the air, water, and soil in Tongass National Forest.
We float magically through the understory as state-of-the-art dactylcam flies us past rainforest ferns in this gorgeous aerial photography. We take a scenic tour through the ancient old growth forest of the Tongass, where 200-foot trees live over 800 years. See the assortment of life that’s sustained when these mighty trees finally fall to the forest floor. They continue to enrich the rainforest and prompt the cycle of growth to begin again, including species as varied as coastal brown bears, bald eagles, and salmon

Alaska Travel Adventures: Rainforest Canoe Adventure and Nature Trail in Ketchikan
The adventure begins with a scenic motorcoach tour to a secluded mountain lake, where you will board Indian-style 37-foot, 20 passenger canoes which are fast, stable, and easy to maneuver. Paddle under the direction of an experienced guide, scan the shore for wildlife and learn the unique natural and Indian history of the Ketchikan area. The lake, part of a lush rain forest, is ideal for canoeing and is surrounded by the Tongass, the largest National Forest in the United States.
Stop ashore for a native-style snack including smoked salmon, clam chowder, rolls with wild berry jams and beverages. A knowledgeable guide will lead a short nature walk highlighting the flora and fauna of the rain forest, including a carnivorous plant, the Sundew, which uses tentacles with an adhesive dew to ensnare small insects. Paddle back to the canoe dock and reboard your motorcoach that returns to the cruise ship pier.
This adventure is a rare opportunity to comfortably explore Southeast Alaska in the manner of its original explorers and early culture.
Hiking Bay Point Trail | Californians Visit Alaska | My First Time in Haines, Alaska
Hey everybody, here's another video from my time in Alaska. Just a casual vlog style video of our second excursion in Alaska - hiking the Bay Point trail in Haines, Alaska. Still a little new to true vlogging, so bear with me here. Full hike and review. Plenty of views as Haines was (personally) the prettiest stop we made in Alaska (also the least touched by humans). Christian does some cool handstand and planche work at one of the look out points, so make sure you stay for that. Take a look at what Alaska looks like at 11pm at the very end - it's a little trippy!

Join an experienced Alaskan trail guide for a walk through natural, unspoiled beauty in the coastal rain forest on a remote island in the Tongass National Forest. The trail takes you through a beautiful old growth forest, by way of a secluded beach, and is mostly boardwalk, about one mile in length and well maintained. Follow your knowledgeable guide through this ancient forest and learn about botanic species native to this region, like Western red cedar and yellow cedar that early Natives were so dependent upon for spiritual enrichment, shelter and transportation and how Sitka spruce was instrumental in the construction of Howard Hughes’ famous “Spruce Goose” and other early vintage fighter planes.
After hiking this gently sloped historic trail, enjoy an Alaskan snack of smoked salmon, cheese and crackers, hot chocolate, coffee, juice and water. Then take some time to explore the natural beauty around you. A motorized rigid inflatable Seahawk provides a short, but exciting cruise along the coast of Clover Passage. Whales, Stellar sea lions, harbor seals, porpoise, bald eagles and migrating seabirds may be spotted on this route. Bring your camera and binoculars!

NASA | Mapping Alaska's Forests
NASA and the U.S. Forest Service are surveying the forests of Interior Alaska. The airborne study using an advanced instrument will create a 3D map of the forest composition. This will enable scientists to see patterns of fire recovery and provide a benchmark for assessing future changes to the region.

Keep Roadless in The Tongass
October 9, 2018 Webinar:
This summer we went north, to Alaska, the “last great frontier” to sit at the frontlines of climate change and begin our humble listening tour.
What makes the fabric of Alaska unique is its remoteness. Alaska is still a wild place. It is also the resource colony of America. When this distant land remains out of sight, it remains out of mind.
Alaska is a wild land under attack. It is a wild land whose struggle for land protection is also a struggle for indigenous sovereignty and human rights.
In 2001, the Roadless Rule was created to ensure nearly 50 million acres National Forests, an American and global ecological treasure, remain roadless.
In the lower 48, where roads are the veins of our modern existence, the concept of a roadless area might feel unfathomable. What does a road have to do with land conservation? Roads equal extraction. First a road is paved, and then the pillaging on behalf of industry begins. Someone, somewhere, made the decisions about the very roads we drive on today that led to the industrialization of all our lands. But Alaksa is still wild.
Home to precious wild salmon, bears, the Haida and tlingit peoples, The Tongass National Forest is Turtle Island’s largest and wildest national forest hosting Ancient Old Growth, icefields, glaciers, rivers, fjords on an archipelago system in Southeast Alaska. There is no forest standing in the world like this. If we destroy her, there will never be another again. This is our forest.
On Aug. 2, 2018, the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced it intends to create an “Alaska state-specific” version of the Roadless Rule, signaling a gift to a handful of timber companies that will mire the U.S. Forest Service in unprecedented, costly and needless controversy for years to come.
In early September, the For The Wild team headed to the first hearing for this Roadless Rule reform in Juneau, Alaska. The entire scene was surreal; the attack on these lands was open again. We were going to have to fight.
This webinar with For The Wild, Sitka Conservation Society and Southeast Alaska Conservation Council highlights imperative role of public comment periods and the attack our national treasure the Tongass National Forest.
