The National Art Center, Tokyo
Special Exhibition Gallery 2E
April 11 (Wed.) – May 28 (Mon.), 2018
Closed on Tuesdays (except for May 1)
Imagine some 300 koinobori (carp streamers) designed by Reiko Sudo, one of Japan’s preeminent textile designers, vigorously swimming around the gallery. Taking her inspiration from the traditional Japanese koinobori event, Sudo created this collaborative project with French exhibition designer Adrien Gardère, and presented the work at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington D.C. in 2008 and the Guimet Museum in Paris in 2014. For Sudo’s new version of the work, produced for the National Art Center, Tokyo’s largest gallery (2000m² of floor area, 8m high), she will join forces with Seiichi Saito, a noted member of Rhizomatiks. For everybody to better enjoy and participate in the installation, a hands-on experience corner will also be set up at the venue. Don’t miss this opportunity to enjoy the multicolored koinobori as they come alive “now!” in this incredible atmosphere.

In 2004, joined Group to Establish Solaputi Kids' Camp organized by the pediatricians and park-planning specialists and devoted to build a private camp with medical care. With offered 16 ha landmass from Takikawa city in Hokkaido, he started to live in Hokkaido in 2007.Group to Establish Solaputi Kids' Camp has developed from general incorporated foundation to public interest incorporated foundation in 2010, with success of 700 million yen donation in 7 years and with building facilities of stay, dining and bath room and medical care unit. He and Solaputi Kids' Camp have realized to invite children with serious or life threatening illnesses such as cancer freely. Children enjoyed riding horses or playing in forests with the support of the camp and he also played with kids, called Ken-san from them.
Almost of the operation and building cost of the camp are covered by donation in this Japan, where the donation culture is not usual compared to West countries. He has strong will toward it with I want to change Japanese donation culture. The change is now getting realized, such as the official support from Tokyo Marathon. He dreams to invite children to the camp from all over Asia.

The Okura School of Kyogen by the Shigeyama Family (Workshop)
Kyogen is Japan's oldest form of theatre. It is closely associated with Noh drama and was originally performed between the acts of Noh theatre. But while Noh themes are mostly solemn, Kyogen presents a comical or satirical view of everyday situations. Orginating from the Muramachi Period of the 14th Century, the humorous stories in Kyogen theatre are derived from typical domestic quarrels and situations. The Shigeyama family has been performing Kyogen for over 400 years. During their North American tour, with shows at the Smithsonian Freer Gallery in Washington D.C. and at the University of Chicago's International House, the Okura School will perform Kaki Yamabushi (the Persimmon Theif). Kusabira (Mushrooms) and Sanbaso (Fertility, Good Harvest and New Year).

Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago.
Learning by listening is a great way to:
- increases imagination and understanding
- improves your listening skills
- improves your own spoken accent
- learn while on the move
- reduce eye strain
Now learn the vast amount of general knowledge available on Wikipedia through audio (audio article). You could even learn subconsciously by playing the audio while you are sleeping! If you are planning to listen a lot, you could try using a bone conduction headphone, or a standard speaker instead of an earphone.

SUMMARY
=======
Tokyo (東京, Tōkyō, ; Japanese: [toːkʲoː] (listen)), officially Tokyo Metropolis (東京都, Tōkyō-to), one of the 47 prefectures of Japan, has served as the Japanese capital since 1869. As of 2014, the Greater Tokyo Area ranked as the most populous metropolitan area in the world. The urban area houses the seat of the Emperor of Japan, of the Japanese government and of the National Diet. Tokyo forms part of the Kantō region on the southeastern side of Japan's main island, Honshu, and includes the Izu Islands and Ogasawara Islands. Tokyo was formerly named Edo when Shōgun Tokugawa Ieyasu made the city as his headquarters in 1603. It became the capital after Emperor Meiji moved his seat to the city from Kyoto in 1868; at that time Edo was renamed Tokyo. Tokyo Metropolis formed in 1943 from the merger of the former Tokyo Prefecture (東京府, Tōkyō-fu) and the city of Tokyo (東京市, Tōkyō-shi).
Tokyo is often referred to as a city but is officially known and governed as a metropolitan prefecture, which differs from and combines elements of a city and a prefecture, a characteristic unique to Tokyo.
The 23 Special Wards of Tokyo were formerly Tokyo City. On July 1, 1943, it merged with Tokyo Prefecture and became Tokyo Metropolis with an additional 26 municipalities in the western part of the prefecture, and the Izu islands and Ogasawara islands south of Tokyo. The population of the special wards is over 9 million people, with the total population of Tokyo Metropolis exceeding 13.8 million. The prefecture is part of the world's most populous metropolitan area called the Greater Tokyo Area with over 38 million people and the world's largest urban agglomeration economy. As of 2011, Tokyo hosted 51 of the Fortune Global 500 companies, the highest number of any city in the world at that time. Tokyo ranked third (twice) in the International Financial Centres Development Index. The city is home to various television networks such as Fuji TV, Tokyo MX, TV Tokyo, TV Asahi, Nippon Television, NHK and the Tokyo Broadcasting System.
Tokyo ranks first in the Global Economic Power Index and third in the Global Cities Index. The GaWC's 2008 inventory classified Tokyo as an alpha+ world city – and as of 2014 TripAdvisor's World City Survey ranked Tokyo first in its Best overall experience category (the city also ranked first in the following categories: helpfulness of locals, nightlife, shopping, local public transportation and cleanliness of streets). As of 2015 Tokyo ranked as the 11th-most expensive city for expatriates, according to the Mercer consulting firm, and also the world's 11th-most expensive city according to the Economist Intelligence Unit's cost-of-living survey. In 2015, Tokyo was named the Most Liveable City in the world by the magazine Monocle. The Michelin Guide has awarded Tokyo by far the most Michelin stars of any city in the world. Tokyo was ranked first out of all sixty cities in the 2017 Safe Cities Index. The QS Best Student Cities ranked Tokyo as the 3rd-best city in the world to be a university student in 2016 and 2nd in 2018.
Tokyo hosted the 1964 Summer Olympics, the 1979 G-7 summit ...
Japanese old lady square dancing, Kamagaya Culture Festival 2015
This was so bad I have to post it. The caller is attempting to use English but is using Japanese Katakana pronunciation. The video wobbles because I was trying to stop myself from giggling and laughing out loud. The video clip is short also because I nearly lost it!
If those of you in the public want to comment on this, bear in mind, I posted this just to show how Japanese will try to copy elements of foreign culture they like, rather than understand.

I Genuinely Can't Believe The Things You Can Do In Japan | Our First 24 Hours In Tokyo
Tokyo has so much to do you could spend weeks exploring this epic city! But if you only have a short time, what things should you prioritise? Check out our first 24 hours in Tokyo for some ideas, inspiration and some giggles!
Digital art museum - Awesome for some surreal selfies and the odd collision with a mirror in the dark! Heads up - It gets SUPER busy, even if you arrive before it opens. If you are visiting with kids definitely get upstairs, there is an awesome kid friendly section that your little ones will love.
Karaoke - Loads of places around, super cheap and lots of fun :-) Sorry we had to edit our WONDERFUL singing out due to copyright requirements - I think you might be grateful for that!
Beautiful city temple - called the Atago shrine and is only a short walk from Shimbashi train station (JR line). To be honest we have visited MANY temples in Asia, but this one has a real charm and beauty that surprised us for an inner city temple. It is ornate, beautiful and very Jap-tastic.
Crazy rainbow food and a clash of esoteric Japanese fashion - Harajuku street and the surrounding walking streets are perfect for crazy fun and food that doesn't look real. Things are pretty pricey - so it is worth seeing it as an experience and enjoying the random craziness.
The Shibuya crossing. This giant crossing is too much fun - like many enamoured foreigners we found ourselves going back and forward and filming the chaos.... but the absolute best part for us was how ridiculously cute baby boy was... it melts us every time we watch it!
Genki sushi: A 2 minute walk from the Shibuya crossing - just of Shibuya Centre Street (a walking street) - great prices for Japan and the sushi was a dream. We ate far too much and did NOT regret it!
Awesome budget hostel - Bocchi Hostel was cheap, clean, comfy and pretty spacious. It is a little out of the way. It is about a 15 minute walk from Minami-senju station (which is on the JR line). Book in advance.

This weekend, the WNC Japanese Culture Center opened on Fifth Avenue West. It was created by a Japanese couple who met in Hendersonville in 2009.
Director of the center, Emiko Suzuki, says visitors will learn about traditional Japanese culture and participate in ceremonies.
Mainly this is like a teaching place, like a classroom, Suzuki said. So weekly lesson of Ikebana and also tea ceremony lessons here. So this is more about the classroom.
