ACATENANGO VOLCANO HIKE in Antigua GUATEMALA with OX Expeditions
In 2018, Acatenango Volcano in Antigua, Guatemala killed hundreds of people.
Today, we're doing the Acatenango volcano hike to see it ourselves.
I'm not sure I accurately captured how insanely difficult this hike was. I quit at least 4-5 times on the way up. For the first hour or two, you are on a constant hike up in sand deeper than your ankles carrying a pack that's 30-40 pounds.
When I say (many times) that it was the most physically challenging thing I've ever done, I mean it.
But it's worth it. If you do this hike and decide, like me, that you want to quit, I hope you also do what I did and continue.
As you'll see in this video, you're going to be treated to some of the most incredible sights you'll ever see.
Oh, and forget about sleeping. Volcan Acatenango will keep you awake all night! ????
Want to do the Volcan Acatenango Guatemala hike yourself? You can get it cheaper with other companies, but I highly suggest you do it with OX Expeditions. The equipment they provide is excellent, the guides are friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful, and the food is great!
This experience is definitely one of the best things to do in Antigua, Guatemala!

Hiking Acatenango and Fuego Volcanoes in Guatemala
A 3 day/2 night hike up Acatenango and Fuego Volcanoes in Guatemala. Trip was booked through Old Town Outfitters in Antigua, Guatemala. Fuego is the active volcano that erupts throughout the video. We camped on the side of Acatenango which overlooks Fuego. Acatenango is the 3rd highest volcano in Guatemala and is dormant.
TRAVELLING YOGI VLOG 2: Acatenango Volcano Trek - Antigua, Guatemala
Have you ever wondered what it might be like to climb a volcano?! Like a moth to a flame, I was drawn to the fire of Volcán de Fuego, near Antigua, Guatemala. Rather than climb this rather active fire-breathing dragon, I trekked up her sister Volcán de Acatenango, for arguably one of the best views I've ever experienced!
We climbed from 2450 m above sea level to 3975 m as we summited with the rising sun.10 km up, 10 km down. Traversing many ecosystems. Moving through many shifting internal and external weather patterns. From the forest, to the moon, and back. Join me on two challenging and profoundly beautiful days that changed my life forever.
First there is a mountain.
Then there is no mountain.
Then there is.

An interpretation of this Zen Koan:
First, our feet are planted firmly on the ground. Then, we have our head in the clouds. Finally, we learn how to become both ways of being.

Acatenango & Fuego Volcano Hike - Overnight Tour Antigua Guatemala
Acatenango Volcano Hiking Tour from Antigua Guatemala with an extra hike to see Fuego Volcano erupting. The tour starts in Antigua Guatemala at around 8-9 AM and after a 1h drive to La Soledad the hiking begins. The first part of the hike is the toughest and lasts 1h. After another 2h on easier terrain, the lunch is served. The final hike of the first day is also easy (except the last 10 min) and you arrive at Acatenango Basecamp. Some tours require that you carry the tents with you but the one I booked has a permanent camping near the summit (pfiu!). Some guides can offer an extra hike to see Fuego Volcano (the active one) from up close. This extra hike takes 3h and it is tough. The next day at 4AM is the hike to Acatenango summit to see the sunrise and Fuego erupting. Afterwards, you return to basecamp for breakfast and start the descent which takes ~2h.

HIKE UP TO CERRO DE LA CRUZ - ANTIGUA, GUATEMALA - AUGUST 2018
I took a hike up to a scenic viewpoint that overlooks the colonial town of Antigua called Cerro De La Cruz (The Hill of the Cross). It got it's name from the large cross that is at the top that overlooks and guards the city. It was only about a 10 or 15 minute walk up a modestly steep incline all the way to the top, well worth the trek, even though I was not in shape at this point (as you can probably tell from the shaky camera and huffing and puffing). If you are ever in Antigua I highly recommend this hike up to Cerro De La Cruz (The Hill of the Cross).
Acatenango trek by Tropicana hostal

Acatenango trek is an incredible experience by @tropicanahostelantigua The tour includes breakfast served on the terrace of the hostel roof at 8 am. At 9 am. The shuttle service leaves the hostel and is approximately an hour's drive to the bottom of the volcano. Around 11 a.m. We started our walk. The guides go to the rhythm of the group so there is no pressure, stopping every 500m to take a break and once for half an hour around 1pm for lunch. The walk to the camp takes an average of 4 hours including campfire, dinner, tent and sleeping so all you need to climb is to relax and enjoy the views of the Volcano of Fire that erupts in front of you. Climbing a volcano is one of the experiences that you can not miss.

This video shows the day hike up Volcano Acatenango in Guatemala, which is the second largest volcano in the country. Sunset Pacaya Volcano Hike - Guatemala
Nov 10, 2017 - Hike an active volcano! No, that wasn't on my bucket list, but while in Antigua, there's the nearby Pacaya Volcano, one of three active volcanoes in Guatemala. With a little prodding from Danielle Scher, our energetic youngster of our OAT travel group, Cindy Henley, Sheryl Ott, and I followed her lead. We also invited our driver, Daniel, who tagged along to keep us in line. Pacaya first erupted over 23,000 years ago and is currently one of the most lively volcanos in Central America. It just erupted on Nov 27th; we're sure glad it didn't happen when we were there. Thank you Carlo for guiding us and keeping away from the 'lava' droppings. About Quetzaltrekkers Guatemala
We are the only all non-profit, all volunteer-run trekking and outdoors association in Guatemala.
Quetzaltrekkers was founded in 1995 as a means of self-sustainable, grassroots fundraising for the functioning of Associación Escuela de la Calle (EDELAC), with the overall aim of combating the unfortunate reality of children living and working on the streets of Quetzaltenango. Our job is to see that tourism dollars directly benefit those Guatemalans that need them most: namely, street children and children at risk of becoming street children. We do this by running tourist-oriented, guided-treks through the beautiful Guatemalan highlands: hence the slogan, ’Hike and Help’.
Join us on one of our awesome hikes!
