GEORGIA TRAVEL: TRIP FROM TBILISI TO INCREDIBLE KAZBEGI MOUNTAINS & GVELETI WATERFALL (PERFECT DAY)
✔ We Released the Georgia Travel Guide Ebook
We visited Georgia in June 2017. In this video we describe a part of our journey - a trip from Tbilisi to Kazbegi along the Georgian Military Road, how it is better to get to Kazbegi, where to stop along the way and what to do in the mountains. We went to Kazbegi with a guide by car, so we had a great opportunity to stop in the interesting and beautiful places of the Georgian Military Road. Mtskheta and Jvari, Zhinvali reservoir, Ananuri fortress, Gudauri, the Russia-Georgia Friendship Monument, Sno village - we turned the trip from Tbilisi to Kazbegi into an adventure. After that we spent 3 more days in the mountains of Kazbegi, walked up to the Trinity Church in Gergeti and even higher, visited the Dariali Gorge and Gveleti waterfall, and when the weather turned bad, we spent all the time in hotel, but it did not upset us at all, because the view of the mountains from the Rooms Hotel Kazbegi is fascinating in any weather!

2017 - Georgia Hike (Mestia to Ushguli)
This was by far one of the best trips I've ever had! Seven of us escaped the heat in Dubai towards the end of June 2017 to do this promising 4-day hike between the town of Mestia and Ushguli. Ushguli is one of the highest continuously inhabited settlements in Europe. If you haven't visited the country of Georgia and like to hike, I fully recommend this trip as it offered beautiful landscapes, glaciers and historic villages; this place was timeless!
At the end of each day we were able to find accommodations within the villages with a chance to eat the local foods which was quite welcoming after a long days hike. This hike is very popular and we had the chance to meet many people from various countries also visiting Georgia to do this particular hike. We were like one big family after a while as you started to see the same faces after a while.
I have to take my hat off to my wife as she was over 3 months pregnant during this hike. We had already planned the trip and booked our flights when we then found out she was pregnant. She was a little slower than usual, but she finished the hike like a champ.

Georgia: Trekking in the High Caucasus
Georgia sits astride the mighty Caucasus Mountains between the Black and Caspian Seas and offers a breath-taking variety of landscapes and habitats. The range of flora is absolutely astounding. Following the bloodless Rose Revolution of 2003 and the Russo-Georgian War of 2008, it is becoming a very popular trekking destination due to its beauty and the rich cultural heritage it offers. Wild camping is permitted almost everywhere, and rustic homestays in authentic mountain villages provide a great way to meet the local people. Our film was shot in July of 2017 and features some of the best trekking areas of Kazbegi, Khevsureti and Svaneti. The settlements featured include the highest permanently occupied village group in Eurasia - Ushguli. Read our Georgia travel blogs:

Juta to Roshka trek via Chaukhi pass (3 431 m) [Drone + GoPro] Caucasus mountains Georgia
After climbing Mt.Kazbek and one restday it was time to take the backpacks on again :)
We decided to make something little bit easier - this highly recomended 2 days trek starting from the village Juta in Kazbegi region and ending in the village Roshka in Khevsureti region. All the time we had beautiful views of Chaukhi massiv known as Georgian Dolomites. The highest point of trek lies in 3 431 m Chaukhi pass. Camping near Abudelauri lakes.
Hope you'll enjoy :)

Hiking in Svaneti (Georgia) - Ushguli to Mestia
Every year we, Wald & Don, decide to leave our luxury life behind and camp in the most remote and beautiful area’s we can find. This year fate and google maps had brought us to the amazing Southern Caucasus mountains of Georgia, or to be more precise: the Svaneti National Park. Starting our trip in Tbilisi we immediately got familiar with the weather in Georgia around May. It can be sunny and warm in Tbilisi but cold, rainy and cloudy in the Caucasus mountains. This resulted in the cancellation of our dream flight over the mountains from Tbilisi to Mestia. So no inspection from the plane but instead a long ride by car taking us via the E60 until Zugdidi and up the mountain road to Mestia.
Once in Mestia our trip really started by gathering some information about the conditions in the mountains. Soon we realized that the chances of us completing our 4-5 day hike from Zeskho to Ghebi would be very challenging. It turned out our intelligence gathered from a reliable source in The Netherlands didn’t turn out to be so reliable. The mountains where still covered with snow, even the lower areas. We decided to go to Ushguli and see it with our own eyes with a backup plan ready in case everybody was right. After hitchhiking with a very nice older couple that was telling us beautiful stories about the area, their house, their view on the Russian Georgian conflict, traditional Georgian sausage making etc. etc. we arrived in Ushguli. Unfortunately they were only speaking Georgian and Russian so I can’t share any more details of the conversation.
In Ushguli we stayed at Guesthouse Angelina. In Geogia every house can be turned in to a guesthouse with a friendly smile, but Guesthouse Angelina was had something special: Angelina and family. She provide us with the live recordings used under our footage. Thanks for that and good luck with your singing career! Next to that the accommodation, food and of course the dogs where amazing. They also convinced us to forget about our Zeshko – Ghebi adventure and alternatively choose for the hiking routes that would lead us back to Mestia.
This turned out to be a very good alternative as well. Although we spent less nights out in the woods and more nights in the comfort of a family home, we experienced the real Georgian mountains and the hospitality of the people living there. Snowy days and frozen limps where followed by a burning sun but always with these massive peaks in the background. It was a beautiful trip combining one of the oldest cultures in the world and also one of the oldest landscapes of the world!
Who knows we will be back some day to complete the Zeshko – Ghebi hike... Please let us know if you did it or if you can recommend us any other places we should definitely go to!

Mestia to Ushguli Trek in Svaneti, Georgia (Caucasus)
This is the 3rd day of the trek where we started in Adishi Village en route to Ushguli. The hike required crossing glacial waters with rapids which went as high as my thigh. Quickly we had to climb up the ridge on a steep slope to be up close with the Adishi glacier seen in this clip. Gorgeous trek in Svaneti region to experience the Caucasus in Georgia.

Undoubtedly the finest trek in Georgia. 4 days (plus an extra day in Ushguli) through the spectacular scenery of Svaneti. Majestic mountains, forested valleys, dramatic glaciers and atmospheric historic villages with stone towers commanding the landscape.
This truly is one of the world's great treks!

3-day hike from Mestia to Ushguli in Caucasus Mountains
In September 2018 we hiked the popular and picturesque route from Mestia to Ushguli in Svaneti area in Georgia. Greater Caucasus Mountains are breathtakingly beautiful, and the hike goes over several mountain passes and a small, ice cold river coming straight from a glazier. We stayed the nights in local guesthouses, and enjoyed delicious (and huge) traditional meals.

(*Tips and map for the Mestia to Ushguli trek are at the end of the post)
Traveling Georgia has got to be one of my favorite experiences so far. To start our journey here, as new digital nomads, turned out to be the best decision. The country surprised us in its beauty, in its flavors, and mostly in its amazing people and interesting culture. I can’t wait to see more of what else this place has to offer in the two weeks we have left.
The first episode was shot on a four-day trek between Mestia to Ushguli in the Svaneti region of Georgia. I decided to make the first video with a few words and a lot of visuals of mountains, animals, rivers, and snow - to show how it really is.
I hope you enjoy watching it as much as I enjoyed making it.

- TIPS FOR THE TREK -
1. Download MapsMe app -
2. Download this trek route into the MapsMe app
3. My best tip is to stay more nights in the villages during the trek. Especially in Iparali and Ushguli. Don’t do it in four days! Just do a picnic in the mountains, go horseback riding, rest a bit or just read a book. (If you have the time)
4. Iparali village (third night) - Stay at the “Betegi Guesthouse” - Incredible views, best shower, and delicious food.
5. Ushguli village (last night) - “Caucasus Guesthouse” - great location, amazing homemade food, and super nice hosts.
6. I recommend going horseback riding from Ushguli to the Shakra Glacier
7. In Ushguli - Check out the Svaneti Cafe and ask for the mint cheese. (You will thank me later) ;)
