The Trench of Bayonets, near Verdun, France
The Trench of Bayonets (Monument de la Trenchee des Baionnettes), near Verdun, France is a very poignant and peaceful memorial to French soldiers in World War One.
The memorial came about when the original French trench came under intense German artillery bombardment in June 1916. The effect was so defastating that many French soldiers were killed buried in the trench...all that could be seen was end of bayonets sticking out of the earth.

Bayonet Trench Verdun: Among many revered memorials on the battlefield is the Bayonet Trench, which marks the location where some dozen bayonets lined up in a row were discovered projecting out of the ground after the war; below each rifle was the body of a French soldier. It has been assumed that these belonged to a group of soldiers who had rested their rifles against the parapet of the trench they were occupying when they were killed during a bombardment, and the men were buried where they lay in the trench and the rifles left untouched. However, this is probably not historically accurate: experts agree that the bayonets were probably affixed to the rifles after the attack, and installed by survivors to memorialize the spot.

Bajonettegraben Verdun: Nach dem Krieg wurde östlich einer kleinen Schlucht am Thiaumont, die „Ravin de la Mort“ (Totenschlucht) genannt wurde, ein Graben entdeckt, aus dem die Spitzen der aufgepflanzten Bajonette der Soldaten herausragten. Untersuchungen ergaben, dass die Soldaten tatsächlich noch Kontakt zu ihren Gewehren hatten. In den 1930er-Jahren wurde eine Legende aufgebaut, dass diese Soldaten des französischen 137. Infanterieregimentes während Angriffsvorbereitungen auf das Zwischenwerk Thiaumont lebendig und stehend durch eine Granate verschüttet worden waren. Die Aussagen eines Leutnants der 3. Kompanie, der die Soldaten angehörten, ergab ein völlig anderes Bild: „Die Soldaten waren während eines deutschen Vorstoßes am Morgen des 13. Juni 1916 gefallen und in ihrem Graben liegen geblieben. Die Deutschen beerdigten sie (sie schütteten den Graben zu) und ihre Gewehre dienten als Markierung der Grabstelle.“ Eine Exhumierung 1920 bestätigte seine Erklärung: Keine der sieben Leichen stand aufrecht, vier konnten nicht identifiziert werden. Heute ist der Ort in dem Denkmal La Tranchée des Baïonnettes zu besichtigen, das von einem amerikanischen Industriellen errichtet wurde. Bis vor einigen Jahren waren an manchen der Ruhestätten des Bajonettgrabens noch die einzelnen Bajonette vorhanden beziehungsweise zu sehen. Inzwischen ragen dort keine Bajonette mehr aus der Erde (sie wurden von pietätlosen „Andenkensammlern“ abgebrochen), jedoch sind an einzelnen der Ruhestätten noch die Mündungen der Gewehre mit der Arretierung der Bajonette zu sehen. Teilweise sind diese auf Bodenniveau heute in Beton eingefasst, um sie vor weiterem Vandalismus zu bewahren. (Quelle:Wikipedia)

Heavy artillery: various shots of guns and shells exploding. Includes back view huge gun with camouflage paint; rotating; side view another gigantic French gun; only part of its long barrel showing; a gun hidden in haystack; etc. MS as French soldiers consult map. Shot looking down at several French soldiers digging around entrance of dugout. MS one man inside crevasse; drilling (?) into rock as another stands smoking pipe; they come out; a sort of hose stretches from cave upwards and off screen. MS as French soldier crouches looking into hole in a wall. Shot looking through hole with jagged edges out at desolate burned battlefield. Same soldier inserts something into hole.
Large explosion in distance. (Not certain if that had anything to do with the activities in the previous shots - they may have been mining an enemy position). Shot looking down at a few soldiers in crevasse. CU soldier's arm with wristwatch; held up to tell the time. Several soldiers stand bent over behind wall of sandbags (shaky camera due to shelling). Shot of soldiers' feet running. MS as soldier stands in parapet looking through binoculars. Wide shot empty flat field. MS man with binoculars. MS German prisoners being brought in; walking through misty woods. Group of prisoners and one French guard stand together. 2 French soldiers unload shells from wagon; assembly line style. Huge gun silhouetted against sky. French troops wait in trench in woods; then start to move out to attack. Troops run past ruins. Many mixed-up shots in quick succession follow. Lookout with binoculars. Wide shots; explosion. Troops running across wide field. Troops carry wounded back to same ruins. intense fire on ground from flame throwers. Group of soldiers take cover behind mounds / in shell craters; some throw grenades or smoke bombs; others keep low. They then advance in short bursts. Next; shots panning on desolate battlefield: big piles of rubble; burnt tree stubs. A few men walk past abandoned artillery equipment. Wide shot soldiers running in distance. Others walking across smoky field. Soldiers crouch behind rocky hills in area already decimated by battle; firing rifles; smoke blowing around. CU German POW eating bread. French artillery team firing big gun; they use small crane to move the heavy shells. Side view another gun firing. MS soldier poses with big shell; on it is written A ta Sante! (To your health). Shot from just behind huge gun. Series of big explosions in distance. Series of gigantic rail-mounted guns firing. Next; 2 soldiers running up steep hill toward camera. Verdun Part One: Arriving at the Douaumont Ossuary, Verdun, France.
In one single shot lasting over 5 minutes, I arrive in the battlefield area to the north east of the city of Verdun. I pass the Trench of Bayonets, the Douaumont Ossuary (not a brilliant view as the weather is quite bad) before heading off towards Fort Douaumont. The second half of this video looks at the features on top of the central part of the fort including the creepy viewing positions which look like futuristic alien heads and the quite incredible rising gun turrets. I Part Two (a separate video) I go inside the Fort.
