Greece: Athens mosque likely to open by September, official says
Greek capital's first formal mosque in more than 180 years is set to open for prayer within months.
Greece's education and religion minister says the country's long-delayed first state-sponsored mosque is likely to begin operating in September, about three years after its construction was approved by Parliament.
Kostas Gavroglou spoke on Friday during a visit to the nearly complete mosque on the outskirts of the Athens city centre, accompanied by representatives of the Muslim community. Its construction has been controversial, with some opposing a mosque in the Greek capital.
It is particularly good that soon there will be the first prayer from the imam of the Athens mosque. We hope this will happen in September at the latest, Gavroglou said.
Supervised by the Greek state, the 350-capacity mosque, which has neither minaret nor dome, is situated in the industrial area of Eleonas, near a refugee camp.
The $967,000 construction project has none of the ornate grace typical of Islamic places of worship
Tens of thousands of Muslim migrants live in the greater Athens area, and have been using informal prayer rooms in basements and disused stores.

History Of The Ottoman Tzistarakis Mosque In Athens
Tzistarakis Mosque (Greek: Τζαμί Τζισταράκη) is an Ottoman mosque, built in 1759, in Monastiraki Square, central Athens, Greece. It is now functioning as an annex of the Museum of Greek Folk Art.
The mosque was built in 1759 by the Ottoman governor (voevoda) of Athens, Mustapha Agha Tzistarakis. According to tradition, Tzistarakis used one of the pillars of the Temple of Olympian Zeus to make lime for the building, although it is more likely that he used one of the columns of the nearby Hadrian's Library.
The mosque was also known as the Mosque of the Lower Fountain (Τζαμί του Κάτω Σιντριβανιού) or Mosque of the Lower Market (Τζαμί του Κάτω Παζαριού) from its proximity to the Ancient Agora of Athens. During the Greek War of Independence, the building was used as an assembly hall for the local town elders. After Greek independence, it was used in various ways: thus it was the site of a ball in honour of King Otto of Greece in March 1834, and was also employed as a barracks, a prison and a storehouse.
In 1915 it was partly rebuilt under the supervision of architect Anastasios Orlandos, and was used to house the Museum of Greek Handwork from 1918 (in 1923 renamed to National Museum of Decorative Arts) until 1973. In 1966, it was provisionally refurbished to provide a place of prayer during the stay of the King of Saudi Arabia, Saud, in the city.
In 1973 the main functions of the Museum of Greek Folk Art moved to 17 Kydathinaion Str., with the mosque remaining as an annex to it. The V. Kyriazopoulos pottery collection of ceramics remains in the mosque to this day. In 1981 the building was damaged by an earthquake and was re-opened to the public in 1991

New Athens Mosque Set to Open Its Doors in Time for Ramadan
A Muslim mosque, the first in the Greek capital since the end of the Ottoman occupation, is expected to open its doors in time for Ramadan, which starts on May 6.
The 1,000-square-meter building, in the district of Elaionas, will not have a minaret. It is designed to hold 350 people and will be segregated by gender.
The administrative committee which will oversee its operation has presented Moroccan-born Zaki Mohammed as its candidate for the position of Imam. His candidacy must be approved by the Greek minister of Education, Costas Gavroglou.
Greek daily newspaper Kathimerini reports that prospective imam Mohammed, aged 50, came to Greece approximately 25 years ago. He holds Greek citizenship and is the father of two children.
He speaks Arabic, Greek and French and has studied theology and mathematics. He is an imam at one of the five makeshift prayer rooms in Athens which have received permits from the state.
The revenue earned from any potential donations to the mosque will go toward funding its operations. If donations exceed operational needs, it will be up to the mosque’s board to decide if further donations will be accepted.
Greece’s 250,000 Muslims have been pushing the government to build a mosque for years. Currently, they pray at makeshift sites, sometimes in basements or warehouses, and these sites have been targeted by vandals in the past.
