Japan Spring 2012 - Kyoto, Imperial Palace Ume Sakura
A short movie from our yesterday's trip to Kyoto. During the waiting for English speech contest results we visited the imperial palace park. The Ume (prune) trees were blossoming. It was like real sakura (the cherry trees blossom) with the main difference that there were significantly less people. It was quite a nice experience. Follow us on twitter:

Spring in Japan is known all over the world for its beautiful Sakura Blossoms. But some weeks before the Sakura blooms, another colorful and stunning flower appears and fill with joy the firsts days of spring.
Ume is the word for the Japanese plum (or Japanese apricot). Ume blossoms are an important part of the tradition and history of Japan, being often represented in art and poetry.
Ume is also used to make the famous Japanese liquor called Ume-shu or plum wine.
The Kitano Tenmangu Shrine is one of the most popular places in Japan to enjoy the Ume blossoms.

Plum blossoms Japanese Flowers Spring MUME UME
I like flower viewing very much in Japan. It's done every four seasons. In winter, winter camellia. Tsubaki who puts a deep red flower is appreciated from the inside in the room in a little winter with the bleak color. From February, March is plum. There is a famous plum orchard nationwide Osaka-jo park, Kitano-tenmangu and Kairakuen. This plum is the plum which blooms in Tenmangu in neighborhood. It isn't a flashy flower like Sakura. Pretty flowers. A flower which suits the world of Japanese WABI,SABI.

Plum Blossom In Kyoto - Japanese Spring
Early spring in Japan is plum blossom season.
Less famous than the infamous Sakura (cherry blossom) they are still very pretty and totally worth your time.
They also come with the nice benefit of having to fight other tourists to get a good picture... ;-)

Though Japan may be famous for its cherry blossoms, those knowledgeable about their greenery are aware that there are actually many more flowering trees and plants that are popular for seasonal viewing nationwide.
The precursor to the blooming of sakura, ume (plum trees) were introduced from China hundreds of years ago and come in shades from pure white to dark pink. Plums are a popular food in Japanese cuisine, and you will find them in many forms from your tea to pickles in the center of your rice balls. In addition, plum trees were thought to ward off danger, and it was once common to plant them in the northeast corner of gardens, that direction being considered most susceptible to misfortune.
Plum blossoms may be difficult to distinguish from cherry and peach to the untrained eye, and similar to those other flowering trees they have a somewhat short lifespan. Still, plum trees bloom slightly longer and are usually visible from the colder month of February down through March. Events such as plum viewings and tea ceremonies are also held around this time. If you’re in Kyoto during this season, be sure to keep your eye out for these cheerful flowers blooming despite the chill in the air.

Sakura near Philosopher's Walk in Sakyo, Kyoto
I took a short walk from my new building to the nearby Philisopher's Walk in Sakyo and saw some beautiful sakura about to reach their prime along the way. What better time to have arrived in the beautiful city of Kyoto?
The area around the canal running between Ginkaku-ji and Nanzen-ji is so named as it is thought to have influenced 20th century philosopher Nishida Kitaro and is popular with locals and tourists alike during hanami.

Sakura in Full Bloom: Tetsugaku no Michi, Kyoto 【HD】
The Tetsugaku no Michi, or the Path of Philosophy is located in the Higashiyama area. This stunning walk runs along a peaceful canal with hundreds of Sakura and Momiji trees, from the intersection of the Shirakawa and Imadegawa Streets, to the vicinity of the Eikando Temple.
The Silver Pavilion and many other temples such as the Nanzen-ji and the Honen-in are located nearby. The famous Daimonji Mountain also is accessible from here, from the north side of the Ginkaku-ji (Silver Pavilion).
The Tetsugaku no Michi is one of the most famous spots to see Sakura (Cherry Blossoms) during Spring in Kyoto. In Autumn, the views of the red maple leaves or Momiji are really beautiful too.
So, this is the perfect place to take a walk, enjoy nature and the culture of Kyoto, check out some temples and even do some hiking on one of the most famous mountains in Kyoto.
