Ventura is located northwest of Los Angeles on the California coast. The western portion of the City stretches north along the Ventura River and is characterized by a narrow valley with steeply sloped areas along both sides. The steep slopes of the Ventura foothills abut the northern portion of the community. Much of the eastern portion is on relatively flat alluvial coastal plain lying along the western edge of the Oxnard Plain. The Santa Clara River forms the city's southerly boundary with the city limits reaching up to the beginning of the Santa Clara River Valley at the historic community of Saticoy. Ventura has four college campuses, Ventura College of Law, Southern California Institute of Law, Santa Barbara Business College and Ventura College. Ventura College is a community college, part of the Ventura County Community College District. The Ventura College of Law is a non-profit law school founded in 1969. Ventura lies along U.S. Route 101 between Los Angeles and Santa Barbara, which was one of the original U.S. Routes. The highway is now known as the Ventura Freeway, but the original route through the town along Main Street has been designated El Camino Real, the historic pathway connecting the California missions. During the post–World War II economic expansion, the community grew easterly, building detached single family homes over the rich agricultural land created by the Santa Clara River. The population was 106,433 at the 2010 census, up from 100,916 at the 2000 census. Ventura is part of the Los Angeles metropolitan area. As of the census of 2000, there were 100,916 people, 38,524 households, and 25,233 families residing in the city. The population density was 4,790.6 inhabitants per square mile (1,849.3/km²). There were 39,803 housing units at an average density of 1,889.5 per square mile (729.4/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 78.8% White, 1.4% African American, 1.2% Native American, 3.0% Asian, 0.2% Pacific Islander, 11.1% from other races, and 4.3% from two or more races. Trail to Rose Valley Falls, Los Padres National Forest, Ventura County, CA
We were at Rose Valley Campground at an elevation of 3,450 feet. Here we were walking the trail to Rose Valley Falls. This trail begins at the southwest area of the campground. Follow it for a short 1/2 mile and be at the base of the falls. It truly is spectacular. The cliffs at the falls are arkosic sandstone and crumble easily.
To get there follow Highway 33 north from Ojai 14.7 miles to mile marker 25.84. Turn right at the Rose Valley Road (6N31) turnoff and follow the paved road for 3.1 miles. Turn right again at the Rose Valley Campground sign (across from the lower lake) and follow this road 0.6 miles into Rose Valley Campground. Watch out for rough sections of road.

2018 Men's Stage 2 | Amgen Tour of California
STAGE 2 PRESENTED BY LEXUS
MONDAY, MAY 14, 2018
VENTURA TO GIBRALTAR ROAD
96.3 miles / 155 kilometers
Expected Outcome: Select group of 2-3 riders
Gibraltar Road has been the most requested mountaintop finish since the race began. After the mountain road was paved and therefore able to be contested in the 2016 race, it became an instant fan favorite. The moment the race finished, the chant began for “more…more…more!” In 2018, Gibraltar is back!
The City of Ventura warmly welcomed the race in 2016 as the peloton bid a quick hello passing through to Gibraltar. This year, Ventura will host its first stage – the start of the “Queen Stage” just a few feet from the Pacific Ocean near the Ventura Pier. Will the riders be relaxing and taking in the sun at the start? Probably not. Most will be thinking about the coming assault of Gibraltar Road.
After a neutral parade route through downtown Ventura, the race will head through Oxnard, Santa Paula and Ojai. The riders will climb out of Santa Paula to the first of three King of the Mountain climbs (KOMs) on the day. The 96.3-mile stage has 7,700’ of elevation gain, with the journey to the top of Gibraltar featuring a 3,100’ climb over the final eight miles of the stage.
As with any of the race stages, routes are subject to change due road damage. With the recent fires and flooding in Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties, there will likely be changes to a section of the Stage 2 route that passes through Camarillo and Montecito as several bridges are being assessed for repair or replacement.
Ventura Ranch KOA Campground Overview - Santa Paula, California
Ventura Ranch KOA Campground Overview - Santa Paula, California
When we visited Ventura CA, we stayed at the Ventura Ranch KOA. Here is an overview of what we found!
Nestled in the hills above Santa Paula California on the edge of the Topatopa Mountains ( this campground provides an excellent getaway from the city while still being a short drive to many area attractions and accessing the park is easy along well maintained paved roads.
Here you will find gentle peacocks roaming This 77 acre park that offers 148 sites, varying from primitive tent sites to luxury penthouse accommodations with spectacular views. The park was very well maintained and landscaped and we found it a pleasure just to spend time in.
RV sites are offered in 4 distinct areas with a few more remote options available. Some full hookup sites are available and many are water and 50 Amp electric, however a complimentary pumpout is available for longer stays.
Many tent sites are available through the campground and offer rustic accommodation in beautiful natural settings. Restroom and showers are located in each of the tent sections and throughout the park and were clean and well maintained. For those who don't want to bring their own tent you could stay in one of the Tipi village tipis which offer comfortable beds and furniture. If luxury is more your style, glamour tents are available as well offering the outdoor experience ...along with comfortable “glamping” amenities .
Beautiful Cabins are also available in three different styles. The studio cabin, 2 Bed 2 Bath models, and the Deluxe Model, all including a kitchen, private bath, and all your linens.
If you looking for a luxurious mountain getaway you might even consider one of their penthouse suites that sit atop the hill. These beautiful tiny houses offer all the comforts of home. And spectacular views of the surrounding hillsides and citrus fields.
Amenities at the park include complimentary Wifi though most sites, Propane filling station, Well stocked Campground store, Pool (open during summer months), Pavilion, Laundry, Dump station, Clubhouse available to reserve, RV storage, and activities for the whole family every weekends.
For the adventurous ones, the climbing wall and zip lines provide thrills and tons of fun. Kids will love the ever popular jumping pillow and playground, as well as participating in arts and crafts and the popular gem mining experience, where you get to search for hidden treasures in soil! Also take advantage be sure to take advantage of the hiking trails to spend some time in nature.
For the adventurous ones challenge yourself to the climbing wall, or have fun flying through the trees on the ziplines.
From rustic camping to luxurious accommodations we found the this campground can provide it all! The staff was helpful and friendly and we know you will have a great time when visiting the Ventura Ranch KOA.

Santa Clarita, California
Santa Clarita, officially the City of Santa Clarita, is the third largest city in Los Angeles County, California, United States and the eighteenth largest in the state of California. The city has annexed a number of unincorporated areas, contributing to the large population increase. It is located about 35 miles (56 km) northwest of downtown Los Angeles, and occupies most of the Santa Clarita Valley. It is a notable example of a U.S. edge city or boomburb. Santa Clarita was ranked by Money magazine in 2006 as 18th of the top 100 places to live.
Santa Clarita was incorporated in December 1987 as the union of several previously existing communities, including Canyon Country, Newhall, Saugus, and Valencia, all of which are situated on the land of the former Rancho San Francisco. It is bounded on the west by the Golden State Freeway (I-5). The Antelope Valley Freeway (SR-14) runs northeast-southwest through an irregular east border, and the Newhall Pass is the city's southernmost point.
