Socialist Party in West Virginia by Dr. Fred Barkey
On January 8, 2013, Dr. Fred Barkey presented The Socialist Party in West Virginia, at the Tuesday evening lecture in the Archives and History Library in the Culture Center in Charleston.
For his doctoral research, Barkey examined the rise of the Socialist Party in West Virginia at the end of the 19th century through its weakening before and during World War I. Socialists were prominent in several craft trades, glass and cigar making for example, and proved popular with coal miners. Socialists were a factor in the Paint Creek-Cabin Creek Strike of 1912-13.
Dr. Barkey received his bachelor's and master's degrees from Marshall University, and he earned his Ph.D. in history with a concentration in United States labor history from the University of Pittsburgh in 1971. Professor emeritus at West Virginia Graduate College, he also has taught history at the University of Charleston and the Institute for Labor Studies at West Virginia University. He was named a Danforth Associate in recognition of his outstanding college teaching. Barkey is the author of Cinder Heads in the Hills: The Belgian Window Glass Workers of West Virginia (1988) and articles for several publications, including West Virginia History and Goldenseal.
His most recent book is entitled Working Class Radicals: The Socialist Party in West Virginia, 1898-1920 (2012) and is available from West Virginia University Press.

The 10 Best Places to Visit in Maryland, U.S.A.
Maryland is a state in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States, bordering Virginia, West Virginia, and Washington, D.C. to its south and west; Pennsylvania to its north; and Delaware to its east. The state's largest city is Baltimore, and its capital is Annapolis. Among its occasional nicknames are Old Line State, the Free State, and the Chesapeake Bay State. The state is named after the English queen Henrietta Maria of France. Maryland possesses a variety of topography within its borders, contributing to its nickname America in Miniature. It ranges from sandy dunes dotted with seagrass in the east, to low marshlands teeming with wildlife and large bald cypress near the Chesapeake Bay, to gently rolling hills of oak forests in the Piedmont Region, and pine groves in the Maryland mountains to the west. Here are the top 10 best places to visit in Maryland.

Today's FOCUS report takes us to the plains and prairies of the American West. Over 70,000 mustangs are now thought to roam free across a string of states, and the number is increasing. Ranchers and farmers have long been calling on the government to do more to limit the population of wild horses, but federal laws state they can't be culled. Authorities have begun rounding up and rehousing the mustangs, but animal rights groups say that techniques used are too cruel. Our team has more.

War of 1812 in the Old Northwest
In 1812, a very young United States of America had its sights set on expansion to the north and the west. But the British wanted to keep its former colony tightly contained. In the balance were the lands of the Northwestern Frontier.
England's Canadian provinces wanted a buffer zone between their lands and what they perceived as a hostile United States. The native peoples who called this land their home, wanted it declared a self-governing Indian territory; an independent nation. The United States wanted to settle the frontier, as they felt they had been promised at the end of the Revolutionary War.
The frontier was a gateway to further western expansion; a Great Lakes highway to natural resources; and a military challenge to the combatants.
The War of 1812 would decide who controlled the lands of the Northwestern Frontier, and the future of a continent.
