Barstow’s Western America Railroad Museum
I you are interested in trains than I have a very interesting museum for you.
I recently visited Western America Railroad museum and I wasn’t expecting to much.
I got out of there with utter amazement.
The railroad museum is located in Barstow in the old Historic Harvey House.
On our trip to see the whole Route 66 on our luxurious Lexus we purchased with the assistance of a guide that was recommended to me by a friend.
We looked at what all of the fuse was in traveling this path.
As I drove in comfort I just was extremely thankful for the ideal to get on the internet go to and download the guide that gave me the ability to drive in an affordable car that I have been dreaming of getting for a very long time.
There are many different museums that you could go to on the way to the Railroad Museum, we just decided that the whole family would have lots of fun if we visited the railroad museum first.
We basically finished looking at the whole museum in about two hours.
I thought that was a healthy amount of time to be in a museum.
The museum is laced with old trains that you could explore and pretend you are one of the conductors.
If railroading is your passion, than this is the place where you need to be.
You get to see all of the trains inside and out and you get to learn wonderful history lessons from each train car you go to.I think the best part of it all was that the museum was free.
Yes, people I am a bit cheap.
They do ask for donations, but of course it is not mandatory.
Go ahead and have the time of your life.
Visit the Western America Railroad Museum.

ABOUT THIS FEED:
Barstow is located on BNSF Railway's Southern Transcon, the former Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway (AT&SF) mainline between Chicago and Los Angeles.
Barstow is fairly busy, both with BNSF traffic on their Southern Transcon, plus traffic of the Union Pacific Railroad (UP). This is where BNSF's Needles Sub from the east becomes the Cajon Sub to the west.
The UP's Los Angeles Sub (the former Los Angeles & Salt Lake [LA&SL]) ties into the BNSF ex-Santa Fe east of Barstow at Daggett.
West of Barstow at Valley Junction, BNSF's Mojave Sub diverges towards Tehachapi Pass, and is another former Santa Fe route, that also sees a good deal of UP traffic.
The (default) east camera looks towards the crossovers (switches) at control point (CP) Barstow, which is a light-on-approach CP, i.e., the signals are dark until a train is within the adjacent/approach signal block(s).
There is an ATCS layout available, but with little to no server (data) coverage.
There is a radio stream available, focused on the line to the west (Hesperia/Upper Cajon):
When’s the next train? Yeah, we get this a lot. There’s no schedule for freight trains, but some of our more knowledgeable members will provide real-time information when it’s available. Please refrain from asking.
Amtrak’s Southwest Chief stops in Barstow (BAR) twice daily: the eastbound #4 at 9:41 PM, and the westbound #3 at 3:45 AM (Pacific time zone).
The concrete pads you see are from when there were more platform tracks here at the station (Harvey House).

Barstow, CA Harvey House Train Station
Like my Facebook page:
The Harvey House Railroad Depot, originally known as the Casa del Desierto, is a former Fred Harvey Harvey House located in Barstow, in the Mojave Desert within San Bernardino County, California, United States. Casa del Desierto now functions as an unstaffed Amtrak passenger station as well as housing Barstow city offices and two museums. It is now often referred to as the Barstow Amtrak Station.
The Casa del Desierto station and hotel was built by the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway and replaced an earlier one built in 1885 that burned in 1908. It was designed by renowned Fred Harvey Company architect Mary Colter in a synthesis of Spanish Renaissance and Classical Revival architecture styles. The historic structure is an elegant presence in the Mojave Desert beside the intermittent Mojave River. Santa Fe then closed the station in 1973. Casa del Desierto was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975. The site was then designated as a California Historical Landmark in 1976.
The City of Barstow obtained the station in 1990 and moved several city offices into the building. The Barstow Area Chamber of Commerce operates out of Barstow Harvey House. Other public institutions located here are the Western America Railroad Museum on the east side and the Barstow Route 66 Mother Road Museum on the north side.

USMC Railhead at Barstow
The Marine Corps operates a busy railhead at Barstow, Calif., for heavy military equipment including M-1 tanks transported by train as seen in this April 2015 production.
Marine Corps Logistics Base Barstow, California has implemented several initiatives that continue to make its railhead not only the largest in the Department of Defense, but also increase its value as a strategic asset. Based at the Yermo Annex of MCLB Barstow, training rotations account for a hefty share of the rail traffic at Yermo, and equipment is often sent to Production Plant Barstow, Marine Depot Maintenance Command there for repair and overhaul. A major training cycle took place in March, with First Cavalry Division out of Fort Hood, Texas on-loading after an 18-day exercise at the National Training Center at nearby Fort Irwin, while First Infantry Division from Fort Riley, Kansas offloaded at the same time for their turn at the NTC.An 80-hour Rail Ops course introduced in February 2014 teaches Army and Marine Corps personnel how to load and offload their equipment. The class averages 20 to 30 students each month. Another initiative is getting the military units to move more equipment by rail rather than by truck, and to get San Bernardino County to allow use of military heavy equipment transporters rather than commercial tractor trailers, which cost around $5,800 each, one way. Produced by Cynthia McIntyre. Videography by Cynthia McIntyre and Keith Hayes. Narration: Keith Hayes

Driving around Inyo County, California in the Mojave Desert
Inyo County is on the east side of the Sierra Nevada and southeast of Yosemite National Park in Central California. It contains the Owens River Valley; it is flanked to the west by the Sierra Mountains and to the east by the White Mountains and the Inyo Mountains.
Mount Whitney, the highest peak in the Contiguous United States, is on Inyo County's western border (with Tulare County). The Badwater Basin in Death Valley National Park, the lowest place in North America, is in eastern Inyo County. The two points are not visible from each other, but both can be observed from the Panamint Range on the west side of Death Valley, above the Panamint Valley. It has the biggest elevation difference of all of the counties and county-equivalents in the contiguous United States.
With an area of 10,192 square miles (26,397 km2), Inyo County is the second-largest county by area in California, after San Bernardino County. Almost one-half of that area is within Death Valley National Park. However, with a population density of 1.8 people per square mile, it has the lowest population density of any county in California.

Barstow Harvey House - Barstow, CA - Railfanning
Also known as Harvey House Railroad Depot and Barstow station, this historic building houses several museums and exhibits. This is a great stop to see several different displays at once. A stop on the Amtrak line it houses the Western America Railroad Museum, the Route 66 Mother Road Museum and currently (through March 30, 2017) the NOAA Science on a Sphere exhibit.
History and science come together at the Barstow Harvey House.
If you're into rail travel, this is a place where you could sit and watch trains all-day-long.
This is my first Rainfanning video, recorded (video and stills) with my phone. That, and the fact that I hadn't had a drink yet, makes for a shaky video. I did this for one person/youtub channel and, if you want to see more railfanning videos hop on over to:

11/22/17 A Great Barstow Railfanning for Jon's Birthday Trip Pt. 1 feat. unusual trains!
Here is part 1 of some awesome trains we captured in the Barstow area starting off with the sub that Jon has been wanting to railfan a bit off, the Mojave Sub! Now the reason we came two days prior to Jon's birthday is because a friend of ours notified that two really unusual train would arrive that morning with the first carrying 4 former California State Railroad Museum engines being transported to the Museum of the American Railroad in Frisco, Texas on a HSTOBAR. Then we were told about an hour or two later, one of Metrolink's new F125s #925 is coming back down from its unusual movement into the Washington state on a HBAKBAR. Both H Trains also had great power on head end as well too. We even got the chance to see one of the UP Trackage Right trains go through the Mojave Sub as well as the Boron Local with BNSF 2515 as one of the trailing units! We also catch a glimpse of UP 3012 as well as 2 3GS21Bs and many other good power there too.
More to come and thanks for watching!
