Louisville Cardinals vs Western Kentucky Hilltoppers - December 20, 2014
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. -- Montrezl Harrell's sudden meltdown appeared costly for fourth-ranked Louisville until Terry Rozier stepped up to provide composure for the Cardinals.
Not to mention some timely baskets and a career-high 32 points.
Rozier took charge after the first-half ejection of Montrezl Harrell to score 26 points in the second half and lead the Cardinals past Western Kentucky 76-67 on Saturday.
We knew it was going to be tough playing without Trez, Rozier said after making 9 of 16 from the field and 11 of 13 from the foul line. It was big losing him, so we all had to step up. I wasn't the only one making shots. We all did something.
Rozier closed Louisville's scoring with five free throws down the stretch that followed three 3-pointers to quash the Hilltoppers' hopes of seizing momentum following Harrell's exit with 38.7 seconds remaining in the first half. The preseason first-team All-American was assessed a flagrant-2 foul for throwing an elbow following a shoving match after a loose ball scramble.
After the officials reviewed video, Harrell was assessed a Flagrant 2 foul and ejected. Western Kentucky's D.J. Clayton received a technical foul, along with technicals issued to both benches.
Harrell departed with 14 points and six rebounds and apologized to his teammates at halftime. He was remorseful after the game and said his outburst was spur of the moment. It was a heated situation in a dog pile and it took a turn for the worst, honestly. It was just a bad day. ... I know I shouldn't have reacted in that way and I'm truly sorry and apologize for the way I reacted.
Louisville's top player then asked Cardinal teammates to pick things up in his absence.
Chris Jones added 10 points for Louisville (10-0), which made 5 of 10 from long range in the second half to keep a safe cushion against WKU (5-5). Freshman 7-footer Anas Mahmoud added six points and five rebounds as the Cardinals outrebounded their in-state rival 37-35 and made 26 of 30 free throws.
We always talk about keeping a level head no matter what the environment may be, Louisville assistant Kenny Johnson said afterward in place of head coach Rick Pitino. Montrezl owned up to his part in the mistake and that's what happens in everyday life as well as in basketball, people make mistakes.
Basketball is a game of adverse situations and that was an adverse situation that we had to overcome.
T.J. Price scored 24 points and D.J. Clayton 14 for the Hilltoppers, who got within 73-67 with 39 seconds left before Rozier added three free throws to seal the victory in a game was at times ragged and chippy.
I don't think it had anything to do with (Louisville missing) Montrezl, WKU coach Ray Harper said. It had to do with us missing free throws on the front end with one-and-ones. You can't beat good teams and shoot 60 percent from the free-throw line.
---
TIP-INS
Louisville: Rozier also had five rebounds and three steals. ... The Cardinals evened the series at 39 wins each.
Western Kentucky: The Hilltoppers trailed 29-24 at halftime, their lowest first-half total this season. WKU scored 26 points against Bowling Green on Dec. 3.
TEED UP
Besides Harrell earning his first career ejection, WKU's Clayton received a technical foul for his part in the first-half tussle. T.J. Price and Louisville's Mangok Mathiang received second-half technicals.
RUMOR MILL
Jones called crazy a social media buzz this week that the Memphis native would transfer to play for the hometown Tigers. My high school coach called me to ask was I transferring and I was like, `What are you talking about?' the senior guard said. I haven't done anything to get kicked off the team. ... It is what it is, trying to get us off focus.
UP NEXT:
Louisville: Hosts Cal State Northridge on Tuesday.
Western Kentucky: Hosts Brescia (Kentucky) on Saturday.

WKU Soccer's Amanda Buechel Talks about WKU's 5-0 Win over UALR 9-23-12
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - WKU completed the opening weekend of the Sun Belt Conference play 2-0 following a 5-0 blanking of Arkansas-Little Rock at the WKU Soccer Complex on Sunday. It was the third straight win and shutout for the Lady Toppers.
WKU (7-3-0, 2-0-0) has now shutout five straight opponents in Sun Belt Conference play and nine of their last 11 SBC opponents overall. WKU has recorded five shutouts in 2012 and 17 in the last two seasons combined.
The win aided the continuance of a recent string of dominance for Western Kentucky University in fall team sports in Sun Belt Conference play. Since Sept. 30, 2011, WKU's soccer, volleyball and football teams have a combined 35-3-3 record against SBC competition. WKU Soccer is 10-1-3 during the time period and are unbeaten in their last seven SBC outings. WKU Volleyball is 18-1 in SBC play during the span, including 16 consecutive wins. WKU Football is 7-1 since Sept. 30, 2011, having won their last seven conference games.
Sophomore Nicholette Sartori (Malabar, Fla.) found the back of the goal in the seventh minute after hooking up with Amanda Buechel (Cincinnati, Ohio) to open the scoring for the Lady Toppers. It was the fifth time this season that WKU has scored in the first seven minutes of a game.
Buechel added her third goal of the weekend and brought her weekend point total to seven in the 27th minute when Chrissy Tchoula (Noblesville, Ind.) connected with the Lady Toppers' leading scorer.
Sartori added her third goal of the season in the 62nd minute.
Freshman Lauren Moats (Nixa, Mo.) added a pair of late goals, included a beautiful header in the 71st minute off passes from senior Christen Sims (Madison, Ala.) and Haley Haffner (Noblesville, Ind.), to put the game away.
The Lady Toppers' five goals were the most since a 5-0 win over Louisiana-Monroe on Oct. 15, 2010. The mark was just one off the school record for a conference outing.
WKU swept its opening weekend of Sun Belt Conference competition for the first time since 2007 when the Lady Toppers won the Sun Belt Conference regular season championship. It marks the fifth time in program history that WKU has started conference play 2-0.
Freshman keeper Nikki Hall (Cincinnati, Ohio) faced just three shots in the game and just one on goal as the WKU back line led by senior tri-capatain Ali Stahlke (Naperville, Ill.) helped give the Lady Toppers their fifth shutout of the year. Only two teams have scored more than one goal against the Lady Toppers this season. Hall has now played 720 consecutive minutes in goal for the Lady Toppers.
WKU returns to the field next weekend with a two-match swing through the Sunshine State. WKU faces Florida Atlantic on Friday, Sept. 28 at 6:00pm CT before traveling to Florida International on Sunday at noon CT.
WKU next's home match is Oct. 12, 2012 against South Alabama at the WKU Soccer Complex. WKU to Conference USA Press Conference 4-1-13
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — Western Kentucky University has entered into a membership agreement with Conference USA for its athletic programs beginning on July 1, 2014, university President Dr. Gary Ransdell and Director of Athletics Todd Stewart announced Monday.
Conference USA is an established, nationally prominent athletic conference that sponsors intercollegiate competition in 20 sports. Conference USA will have 16 member institutions in 2013-14, including 14 that compete in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS).
Conference USA sponsors competition in 20 sports - nine for men (baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, soccer, tennis and indoor and outdoor track and field) and 11 for women (basketball, cross country, golf, rowing, softball, soccer, swimming and diving, tennis, indoor and outdoor track and field and volleyball).
The league sponsors numerous academic awards, including the Commissioner's Honor Roll and the Commissioner's Academic Medal, indicative of outstanding achievement in the classroom. Conference USA annually awards 12 postgraduate scholarships, along with the Sport Academic Award, Scholar Athletes of the Year and the Institutional Academic Excellence Award. The league also added a Spirit of Service Award, recognizing student-athletes three times a year for a combination of significant community service efforts, good academic standing and participation in their elected sport.
Conference USA membership in 2013-14 will include Charlotte, East Carolina, FIU, Florida Atlantic, Louisiana Tech, Marshall, Middle Tennessee, North Texas, Old Dominion, Rice, Southern Miss, Tulane, Tulsa, UAB, UTEP and UTSA, with Charlotte and Old Dominion not competing in football.
In addition to reuniting with current Sun Belt Conference members FIU, Florida Atlantic, Middle Tennessee and North Texas, beginning in 2014-15 WKU will once again be in a conference with former Sun Belt Conference foes Charlotte, Louisiana Tech, Old Dominion and UAB. Furthermore, WKU and Marshall were founding members of the Ohio Valley Conference in 1948.
Conference USA teams and individuals have made over 650 appearances in NCAA postseason competition since its inception, including 67 bowl game bids for its football programs, 102 men's basketball and 85 women's basketball postseason trips and 57 baseball appearances. The league has also seen 36 volleyball teams, 61 men's and women's soccer teams and 34 softball teams earn NCAA Tournament bids.
Conference USA institutions are among the nation's best in academic performance among student-athletes, bolstered by the fact that student-athletes at league schools have a higher graduation rate than the general student population. Among Conference USA's 5,000 student-athletes, there are champions off the playing field as well. In 17 years, 169 student-athletes earned national Capital One Academic All-America honors, while 588 were named All-District. In addition, more than 22,000 student-athletes have been named to the Commissioner's Honor Roll or received the Commissioner's Academic Medal, indicative of outstanding achievement in the classroom.
Conference USA enjoys significant television exposure through partnerships with FOX Sports Media Group, CBS Sports Network and ESPN. The multi-tiered selection process that is rooted in partnering with all three networks has substantially increased the number of national and regional appearances for football, men's and women's basketball, and all other conference sports.
