Copper Mountain Skiing - 3D Fly Thru
My recent ski trip to Copper Mountain was aided by two new toys. A GPS Tracker app on my phone allowed me to record all my movement around the mountain and map into into Goggle Earth where I can relive the vacation via a 3D Fly-Thru of the entire day (21 March 2012) on the slopes.
The other toy was my GoPro Helmet Cam, that produced the live segments of this short video.
Enjoy!

Alpine skiing, or downhill skiing, is the sport or recreation of sliding down snow-covered hills on skis with fixed-heel bindings. It is characterized by the requirement for mechanical assistance getting to the top of the hill, since the equipment does not allow efficient walking or hiking, unlike cross-country skis which use free-heel bindings. It is typically practiced at ski resorts which provide services such as ski lifts, artificial snow making and grooming, first aid, and restaurants. Back-country skiers use alpine skiing equipment to ski off the marked pistes, in some cases with the assistance of snowmobiles, helicopters or snowcats. Alpine skiing has been an event at the Winter Olympic Games since 1936 (except for the 1940 games).[1]

BLAZE NEW TRAILS
While Vail’s village has been buzzing with activity all summer long, up on the mountain there’s a different kind of excitement in the air. Trenches are being dug, pipes are being laid, and the groundwork for the largest snowmaking enhancement project in North America is well under way.
The first phase of our multi-year snowmaking expansion project will deliver:
The most legendary early season experience
A more predictable opening date
A better late season
You only get one start to a season. Never settle for anything less than the most legendary early season experience.
Vail is known for it’s upscale amenities and massive ski resort, which is the largest in the state. The town is located on both sides of I-70, about two hours west of Denver. The Austrian-modeled ski village has a lot of charm and one of the nicest around.
The Vail Valley offers much to do and see year round. In addition to skiing, ice skating and snow tubing are available, as are family-friendly festivals filled with music, food, and fun.
Camping, rafting, hiking and fishing are all extremely popular activities during summer. There are several 4×4 trails around town which are great way to take in the beautiful Colorado landscape.
Main Attractions
Vail Ski Resort – With over 5000 acres to ski on, there’s a new run or powder stash to find. Biking and hiking are popular on the mountain in the summer.
Biking:
Traverse across Vail’s epic back bowls on the Two Elk Trail. With two trailheads to start from, an East and West, this is one the best mountain biking trails in Eagle County. It’s also a great hiking trail, though a bit long at 11.8 miles.
Ride the paved 9 mile trail from near the summit of Vail Pass down to Copper Mountain. It’s called the Vail Pass Bike Path.
Camping:
Between Minturn and Red Cliff, take County Rd 707 to Halfmoon CG or primitive car camp anywhere on that road. It’s a bumpy road though.
Take US 24 south of Vail just past Red Cliff, you’ll see Hornsilver Campground.
Just after Hornsilver CG take a right on Homestake Rd to Gold Park CG or primitive car camp anywhere along that smooth road. It’s ten miles back to the reservoir.
If you continue south on Hwy 24 past Hornsilver, you’ll past Yoder Gulch Rd. Take a right and and pull over at any spot on that road.
Keep going on Hwy 24 and you’ll hit Camp Hale Memorial CG just before Tennessee Pass.
There’s also primitive camping in the wilderness north of Vail. Take exit 173 onto North Frontage Rd. At traffic circle, stay on N Frontage Rd. Turn left onto Davos Trail and a quick right on Cortina Ln. Follow that for 0.5 miles then stay slight right onto Buffehr. Follow that into the woods where camping is everywhere. Red and White Mountain is the area.
Ski home trail to condo at Copper Mountain
I held a digital camera in my hand while I skied down the Skid Road trail and turned off onto the condo ski home trail. I headed directly to the Wheeler House condo in the East Village of Copper Mountain.
Louie Vito Copper US Grand Prix/World Cup-Dec'16
Highlights of Louie Vito's first contest of the 2016-2017 snowboard season - The U.S. Grand Prix/World Cup held at Copper Mountain.
Copper Mountain Run - July 2011
After an ill-fated attempt to summit Copper Mountain in 2010, Chris joins Denver local Matthew Syzek to run up Copper Mountain. They start at an elevation of 9,700 feet and run along a winding trail before reaching the summit at 12,441 feet. On the way they see babbling brooks, skiing in July, aerial wipe outs and the majesty of the Rockies. After reaching the summit, they somehow find a way to get back down in their exhausted state.
Avy1 Hut Trip Leadville CO
Ryan and I took a trip from Austin to CO to get our Avy1 certification. Instead of just doing the certification at a resort, we decided to step up our backcountry experience and do a hut trip at the same time. What a solid weekend it was... not to mention the 40in of fresh that fell within the time we were there.
We did our AIARE 1 at a 10th Mountain Division Hut.

Elk Mountain by Helicopter
We recently visited Elk Mountain by helicopter. Landed right in the rear parking lot. Elk is the tallest, best and most friendly ski area in all of Pennsylvania. The hospitality we were extended was unprecedented. Thank you Gregg, Joe, Russ and the entire Elk management and security team. We'll be back!
