There Goes the Neighborhood
There Goes the Neighborhood: Highway Construction's Contribution to Community Disintegration in Fox Point and Cities Across America
There Goes the Neighborhood is a short documentary that covers the devastating effects the interstate highway system had on multiple neighborhoods across America during the mid-20th century. The construction of the interstate resulted in each neighborhood's destruction in order to create space for the highway to be built. These demolitions caused the communities that once existed in their respective neighborhoods to disintegrate. We chose to use Fox Point as an example.
My brother and I created this documentary for the National History Day competition. It won first place in Rhode Island's competition for Senior Division Group Documentary, which allowed us to compete on the national level. At the national competition, our documentary was selected as one of fourteen finalists out of a total of around five hundred-thousand total entries submitted across the country, including international entries as well. We placed ninth overall, and were also selected as recipients for the Outstanding Affiliate Award. This was our first time ever making a documentary.
We hope this documentary creates a better understanding of how revolutionary change can only occur when it replaces what once existed before it.
Thanks to Eric Hubble, Lou Costa, Rhode Island Historical Society, David Freeman and Maguire Group, Claire Andrade-Watkins, Robert Clarkin, and Mark Harris for your help, knowledge, and support.
