Wingspan nation bird of pray centre . (Karearea /NZ forrest falcon conservation)
This is a great place to go if you are near to Rotorua.
These guys put a special effort into looking after all birds of prey especially the native NZ falcon or Karearea.
Only 10,000 left in the wild. Most NZ people never see one of these or confuse them with the Australian swamp harrier (hawk).
NZ falcons continually flap and catch live prey as harriers flap, glide & go for whats on offer. Karearea and the Morpork are the only remaining native birds of prey.
The Haast Eagle, Laughing Owl & Eyles Harrier are now extinct.

New Zealand Falcons in Slow Motion at Wingspan
Filmed at Wingspan, near Rotorua New Zealand, April 2017. Wingspan Bird of Prey Centre was established in Rotorua in 2002, and is now recognised as New Zealand’s leading conservation, education and research organisation for birds of prey. They are committed to the conservation of the threatened New Zealand falcon. The New Zealand falcon, or kārearea in Māori (Falco novaeseelandiae), is New Zealand's only falcon. Other common names for the bird are bush hawk and sparrow hawk. It is the country’s most threatened bird of prey, with only around 3000–5000 breeding pairs remaining. Wingspan supports wild populations directly by releasing captive bred falcons and rehabilitating injured wild birds, and supports long-term sustainable conservation action by identifying the reasons for the decline in wild populations and promoting action to reverse this.
The music is the song Askeladden by Ceolskog (me). The background noise was mostly kids, couldn't really hear the faloners speak.
Ceolskog is the solo folk metal project of Adam Helliwell from Hamilton, New Zealand. It is also the name given to his nature-themed YouTube channel. Ceol is an Irish word meaning music, and skog means forest in Norwegian and Swedish. No, I don't have a Patreon. Wild New Zealand Falcons
These are some wild New Zealand falcons i have come across in the wilds of Otago. The new zealand falcon, also known as the Kārearea or bush falcon is a native bird of prey found only in New Zealand. I have witnessed these birds do some interesting things on my travels. I hope you enjoy the video.
