Tour of Yangshuo night life visiting a night market and eating Chinese street food (阳朔夜市和街头食品) China
A tour of Yangshuo night life including visiting a night market and eating Chinese street food (阳朔夜市和街头食品) China. So tonight is our very last night in Yangshuo, a charming little town in Southwestern China, so we're going to show you around the main strip. So our first stop is going to be the street food market. I haven't eaten in maybe two hours, so it's time to get a snack. So you're officially starving. Starving. Ravenous!

So what are you going to have?
Some meat. Oh la la. On a stick?
Alright, happy boy with this meat. Let's see how this tastes. Hot? Very tender. Very smokey. Well seasoned. This is good stuff. So I notice that she put lots of spices while she was cooking this. It's really spicy! I'm just tasting that now. Oh, it's hot!
Oh, that's got some nice kick to it.
Really tasty.
Another favorite of yours. What are you having this time? We're getting the ever popular backpacker meal the banana pancake. Oh la la. This time Chinese style.
Alright, big bite. Piping hot. I can barely hold this.
Mmmmmm. This is a different style. They actually smush the banana and put it right in the middle. As opposed to cutting it into little slices. Is it tasty? Yeah. It's good.
If I had to choose between Guilin and Yangshuo the two most popular cities in this region it's definitely Yangshuo. It's a more historic town. It's a lot more pedestrian friendly and there are great things to eat here.

As we were wandering around the night market tonight we had lots of people come up to us and ask to take photos beside us. At least probably four or five times and we finally filmed the last one. It was really cool. We were like celebrities in China. Yeah, almost famous.
So, this market had some pretty cool souvenirs. We saw fake Chinese passports if you want to take one of those home. They also had combs carved out of ox bone. They had these stamps where you can get your Chinese name carved on them and then you can just sign documents that way which is pretty cool.

Unusual and Usual Foods in Yangshuo Farmers Market, China
Do I really need to point out that many Chinese people eat dogs, cats, bats, rats, and other critters? Yes, I do because the Yangshuo Farmer's Market sold butchered dogs, and we saw one cat in a cage, ready to meet its maker. If sensitive about these issues, don't watch the first 15-30 seconds, give or take a few seconds, in this video.
Let me make it clear that I am not chastising the Chinese or anyone for what they eat or do not eat, and don't want to get involved in cultural tastes. My videos just record what we see and do while traveling. It just so happens that westerners tend to think of dogs and cats as family members and not for eating.
Skip the dogs, bunny-foo-foo, cats and head to the veggie section. Steve and I developed a real fondness for Lotus Root, unfortunately, because we'll never see them being sold in Chicago.

Tea Plantation | Yangshuo
Every weekend Omeida organises a weekend trip so that students get to explore the best of what Yangshuo has to offer. Check out this video from our visit to a local tea plantation close to Jiaobalin village. After being established in 2000, the Seven Stars Tea Plantation now covers 40 hectares of mountainside and produces over 40 tons of the finest quality organic green tea. Students learned about the crop and fermentation processes as they wandered through the plantation before tasting some tea back at the tea house.

Eating Mangosteen at '9 Horse Mountain' Yangshuo, China
China is a country of contrasts and besides big cities, there are some awesome places in the countryside to discover.
Yangshuo in Guanxi province is one of them. With a unique landscape, it offers breathtaking views at many spots. In this short video, we take you to the 'Nine Horse Mounatain' view and talk a bit about one of my favorite fruits, mangosteen.

A Small Chinese Cooking Lesson on a Local Farm Yangshuo, China
The ex-Marine (husband, Steve) and I thought we'd try new experiences during this particular visit to China. Not that cooking is something new for me. I won't even go into how many years I've been doing that! And not that I will even attempt to cook Chinese at home because I've been there, done it, and the prep time just isn't worth it.
Also, take a look at the size of that wok people. No wonder I can never get my little wok hot enough. We stopped at a small village on the way to Yangshuo for a mini-lesson with the nicest family. I couldn't get over how the lady of the house was able to chop red chili without burning the daylights out of her hands. Especially since they were so strong that when I threw them into the wok, Steve and I nearly choked to death from these chili. Strong and potent, I bet they'd be great for congestion...

China/Yangshuo
Yangshuo County is a county under the jurisdiction of Guilin City, in the northeast of Guangxi, China. Its seat is located in Yangshuo Town. Surrounded by karst peaks and bordered on one side by the Li River it is easily accessible by bus or by boat from nearby Guilin. In the 1980s, the town became popular with foreign backpackers, and by the late 1990s packaged tourists began arriving in greater numbers. At that time, domestic tourism represented only a small fraction of the tourists but by 2005 domestic tourists outnumbered foreign tourists by a great margin. Today, the town has become a resort destination for both domestic and foreign travelers.
Rock climbing in Yangshuo was first put on the map by American climber Todd Skinner who visited in 1992, establishing a number of classic lines such as Moonwalker which traverses the famous Moon Hill arch.
Approximately 200 routes are documented in the current edition of the Yangshuo climbing guidebook by Paul Collis, and new routes are being established almost daily. The majority of these have been established by visiting foreign climbers or expatriates. While most routes are single-pitch bolted sport climbing routes, a growing number of multi-pitch sport routes are appearing as climbers venture above the first anchor. There is also great potential for traditional climbing.
The Yangshuo region has numerous locations for climbing, most easily accessible by bicycle, public bus or taxi-van. The most famous of these crags is Moon Hill with several 5.13 graded lines. Other crags of note include Low Mountain, Twin Gates, Baby Frog, The Egg, Bamboo Grove and Wine Bottle Cliff.

Cooking Yangshuo's specialty, beerfish with our friend Harry!
From Yangshuo, Guangxi Province, China.
Beerfish is Yangshuo's specialty. Fish is from Li River, and they cook it with the local beer: Li Quian. Just a little bit of soy sauce and vegetables, the soup is amazing.
Our friend Harry from Little Bulls restaurant invited us to his kitchen and showed how the process. He's a great cook, and he doesn't use MSG.
It's is wickedly fresh, and delicious. When you are visiting Yangshuo, make sure to taste Beerfish!
