Oban is a resort town within the Argyll and Bute council area of Scotland. Despite its small size, Oban is the largest town between Helensburgh and Fort William. During the tourist season, the town of Oban can play host to up to 25,000 people.

Oban occupies a setting in the Firth of Lorn. The bay is a near perfect horseshoe, protected by the island of Kerrera; and beyond Kerrera, the Isle of Mull. To the north, is the long low island of Lismore, and the mountains of Morvern and Ardgour.

The area around Oban is rich with attractions for tourists, from the dramatic scenery of the coast and mountains to the fascinating histories of the local castles and ancient religious sites. There are also many activities available for families and those interested in more active pursuits. The Oban and Lorn tourist information website has detailed information for visitors. The Oban Visitor Information Centre, operated by VisitScotland, is located in the Columba Buildings on the North Pier.

Oban lies at the western end of the A85 road. It also has a railway station from where a number of Abellio ScotRail trains run to and from Glasgow Queen Street daily. The town is also an important ferry port: it is Caledonian MacBrayne's busiest terminal. Oban is known as the Gateway to the Isles, with ferries sailing to the islands of Lismore, Colonsay, Islay, Coll, Tiree, to Craignure on Mull, to Castlebay on Barra and to Lochboisdale on South Uist. In 2005, a new ferry terminal was opened, and in 2007 a second linkspan opened, allowing two vessels to load/unload at the same time.

Lewis and Harris, Outer Hebrides Islands, Scotland

Lewis and Harris in the Outer Hebrides make up the largest island in Scotland. This is the third largest single island of the British Isles, after Great Britain and Ireland. The northern part of the island is called Lewis, the southern is Harris and both are frequently referred to as if they were separate islands. The boundary between Lewis and Harris is formed by a line with Loch Resort on the west and Loch Seaforth on the east. The island does not have a common name in either English or Scottish Gaelic and is referred to as 'Lewis and Harris', 'Lewis with Harris', 'Harris with Lewis' etc. Rarely, the collective name of the Long Island is used, although this is normally applied to the entire Outer Hebrides. Most of Harris is very hilly, with more than thirty peaks above 1,000 ft (300 m) high and seven mountains, defined as Corbetts. It has an area of 841 square miles (2,178 km2) – slightly under one per cent of the area of Great Britain. It is 24 miles (39 km) from the nearest point of the mainland, from which it is separated by the Minch. Lewis is comparatively flat, save in the south-east, where Ben More reaches 1,874 ft (571 m), and in the south-west, where Mealasbhal 1,885 ft (575 m) is the highest point. Lewis and Harris is the most populous of the Scottish islands, and had just over 20,500 residents in 2011, a rise of 5.6% from the 2001 census total of 19,918. The civil parish of Stornoway, including the main town of the island itself and various nearby villages, has a population of approximately 12,000.

The Hebridean Way in 7 Minutes!

This is our adventure on Britain's newest long distance walking route The Hebridean Way in September 2017. We completed the 156 mile walk in 11 days and this is the first video on YouTube on the completed walking route.

If you are thinking of backpacking this route and want some information leave a comment and I'll get back to you.

I will warn you though that the route in some places is not very well waymarked and there are long stretches of road walking to contend with along with very exposed moorland crossings. Think of the Rannoch Moor crossing on the West Highland Way then times it by 10 !

Also, apart from the Machair Way, you will be following waymarkers through pathless marshland where no one has walked before these markers were placed. Only near the end of the trail, before the 9 mile road walk to Lews Castle, you will actually walk on established paths again like The Coffin Route and The Scholars' Path.

You will also need to carry water in the south part of the islands because freshwater is scarce.

It is a long, lonely walk but it will reward you with landscape like nowhere else on the British Isles and the people of the Hebrides are so far beyond hospitable that a new word should be added to the dictionary just for them! :-)

Gigalum Island with Paul McCartney As Your Closest Neighbour Could be Yours (for Just £450,000)

Gigalum Island, off the west cost of Scotland, boasts just over 19 acres, a modern house and private sandy beaches. It's being sold as 'the perfect solution for island hunters on a more modest budget' at less than cost of a London flat. Nearby Kintyre Peninsula shot to fame when Sir Paul McCartney wrote the well-known song Mull of Kintyre. A private island just a few miles from Sir Paul McCartney's Scottish estate has had £100,000 slashed from its price. The 19-acre Gigalum Island - off the west coast of Scotland - boasts a modern house, private beaches and its own jetty with breathtaking views of the surrounding islands. It was put on the market last summer at the price of £550,000 - a bargain considering the privacy, stunning surroundings and Sir Paul's Mull of Kintyre home 15 miles away. But after six months with no takers the sellers have knocked a staggering £100,000 off the asking price. The new £450,000 price tag would get you a three bedroom ground floor flat in Edinburgh's upmarket Merchiston area. In London, the 'slimmest house' in the city - just 99 inches wide - was recently put on the market for £450,000. The island sits just a stone's throw away from the Isle of Gigha - the most southerly Hebridean Island, with a population of just 110. The only way to reach the mainland from the island is via a private boat to Gigha, before taking the ferry to the mainland in a trip that can take up to two hours. The only address on the island is Gigalum House - a striking modernist octagonal building with four separate 'wings' put up in 1980. But the main attraction of the property is undoubtedly its surrounding land. Along its sprawling coastline sit a number of white sand beaches, woods, rock outcrops and wildflower patches. Seals live on the rocks to the south of the islands, whilst dolphins and otters can often be seen playing in the surrounding waters. A scenic walk from the main beach at the lagoon takes you around the whole perimeter of the island - with views out to Jura, and even Northern Ireland. No-one from sellers Rettie were available to talk about why the property had failed to sell at its original price. But the firm's Nick Ainscough insisted the island and its house were an excellent buy. He said the eventual buyer would enjoy 'rustic and charming accommodation on a spectacularly sited island with wonderful surrounding seascape and far reaching scenic views.' Mr Ainscough added that there was the opportunity, subject to planning consent, to extend the house, develop renewable energy sources and even build additional dwellings.' The nearby Kintyre Peninsula found fame when Paul McCartney - who has owned High Park Farm since 1966 - wrote the song Mull of Kintyre. When Gigalum Island originally hit the market, it was described it as 'the perfect solution for island hunters on a more modest budget', well within reach of 'everyday island dreamers'. They went on: 'Gigalum Island is available to purchase now for offers over £550,000 - meaning that for less than the average cost of a one-bedroom flat in London, you could be the proud owner of fully-developed 19.3 acre private island.'

Mallaig; is a port in Lochaber, on the west coast of the Highlands of Scotland. The local railway station, Mallaig, is the terminus of the West Highland railway line, completed in 1901, and the town is linked to Fort William by the A830 road – the Road to the Isles.

The village of Mallaig was founded in the 1840s, when Lord Lovat, owner of North Morar Estate, divided up the farm of Mallaigvaig into seventeen parcels of land and encouraged his tenants to move to the western part of the peninsula and turn to fishing as a way of life. The population and local economy expanded rapidly in the 20th century with the arrival of the railway. Ferries operated by Caledonian MacBrayne and Bruce Watt Sea Cruises sail from the port to Armadale on the Isle of Skye, Inverie in Knoydart, and the isles of Rùm, Eigg, Muck, and Canna. Mallaig is the main commercial fishing port on the West Coast of Scotland, and during the 1960s was the busiest herring port in Europe.

Mallaig prided itself at that time on its famous traditionally smoked kippers, but today only one traditional smokehouse remains, Jaffy's and Sons. Mallaig and the surrounding area is a popular area for holidays. The majority of the community speaks English, with a minority of residents speaking both English and Gaelic. In addition, traditional Gaelic is still taught in the school to pupils who choose to learn the language.

Mallaig has several restaurants, cafes, and takeaways along with a community-run swimming pool and leisure centre. The main focus is on the tourist trade during the summer, however some facilities are open all year round, including the swimming pool. Mallaig has three hotels, lots of self-catering accommodation and several guest houses.

There are two banks and three pubs. The compact village centre is close to the harbour and railway station, with residential areas beyond to the south and east of the harbour. Most of the retail premises are in the main street, or on Davies Brae, which runs south from the village centre. The swimming pool is at the high point of the village on Fank Brae.

There are two minimarkets, and gift shops. An art gallery sells work by local artists. There is a small bookshop A heritage centre next to the railway station is based around old photographs of the locality, but as Mallaig has only existed during the age of photography this offers a good introduction to the history and heritage of the locality. There are Roman Catholic and Church of Scotland churches, and also a Fishermen's Mission facility run by the Royal National Mission to Deep Sea Fishermen. There is a small petrol station with restricted opening times near the harbour.

The West Highland Line links Mallaig railway station by rail to Fort William, Oban and Glasgow. The line was voted the top rail journey in the world by readers of independent travel magazine Wanderlust in 2009, ahead of the iconic Trans-Siberian and the Cuzco to Machu Picchu line in Peru. The four-hour trip to Dumbarton Central railway station passes through spectacular scenery including seascapes, lochsides, mountain and moorland terrain, and offers views of Loch Lomond, the Gare Loch, Rannoch Moor, Ben Nevis, Glenfinnan and Glen Shiel, and Loch Eil. The line also runs along the Clyde between Helensburgh and Glasgow and offers views across the estuary.

Mallaig is an important ferry port with regular Caledonian MacBrayne ferry services to Armadale on the Isle of Skye, a thirty-minute sailing. They also run a daily service to the Small Isles of Canna, Rùm, Eigg and Muck, although the timetable and itinerary differ from day to day. Calmac also offers a non-landing ticket which allows visitors to cruise the Small Isles. In addition, a local ferry service owned by former lifeboatman Bruce Watt sails daily to Inverie in Knoydart, a very remote village, and also calls by prior arrangement at Tarbet in Morar, a location that is only accessible by sea. This service also offers a non-landing cruise through scenic Loch Nevis.
