Mana Pools National Park is a 219,600 ha wildlife conservation area and national park in northern Zimbabwe.
It is a region of the lower Zambezi River in Zimbabwe where the flood plain turns into a broad expanse of lakes after each rainy season.
As the lakes gradually dry up and recede, the region attracts many large animals in search of water, making it one of Africa's most renowned game-viewing regions.
The park was inscribed, in conjunction with the Sapi Safari Area (118,000 ha) and Chewore Safari Area (339,000 ha) as a single UNESCO World Heritage site (for a total of 676,600 ha) in 1984.
The Mana Pools were designated a Ramsar wetland of international importance on 3 January 2013.
Mana means ‘four’ in Shona, in reference to the four large permanent pools formed by the meanderings of the middle Zambezi.
These 2,500 square kilometres of river frontage, islands, sandbanks and pools, flanked by forests of mahogany, wild figs, ebonies and baobabs, is one of the least developed national parks in Southern Africa.
It has the country’s biggest concentration of hippopotami and crocodiles and large dry season mammal populations of the zebra, elephant and Cape buffalo.
The area is also home to other threatened species including the lion, cheetah, Cape wild dog, and near-threatened species including leopard and the brown hyena.
When the area was inscribed by UNESCO, it was one of the most important refuges for eastern black rhinoceros populations in Africa, with about 500 animals.
By 1994, poaching had reduced these to just 10 remaining rhinos, which were removed to another area for their protection.
The park is contiguous with Zambia's Lower Zambezi National Park on the opposite side of the Zambezi River, and the larger UNESCO area is contiguous with the Urungwe Safari Area (287,000 ha),the Dande Safari Area (52,300 ha) and the Doma Safari Area (76,400 ha).
The sanctuary, one of the only two pockets of nyala in the country, is also home to over 16 000 buffalos and more than 12 000 elephant.
More than 350 bird species are enough to draw the breath of any ornithologist.
Its banks flutter with Goliath herons, Egyptian and Spurwing geese, cormorants, storks, brilliantly coloured bee-eaters, and kingfishers.
Vultures, plovers, Nyasa lovebird, yellow-spotted nicator, white-collared pratincole, Livingstone’s flycatcher, banded snake-eagle, and the cliché symbol of Africa, the black and white fish eagle, haunt the riverine forest and mopane woods.
In the river, tiger fish, bream, tilapia, vundu, nkupi, chessa, electric fish, eel fish, cornish jack and lung fish sport and prey upon one another.

Hwange is a town in Zimbabwe. It is located in Hwange District, in Matabeleland North Province, in northwestern Zimbabwe, close to the International borders with Botswana and the Republic of Zambia. This location lies approximately 100 kilometres (62 mi), by road, southeast of Victoria Falls, the nearest large city. The town lies on the railway line from Bulawayo, Zimbabwe's second-largest city, to Victoria Falls. Hwange sits at an elevation of 770 metres (2,530 ft), above sea level.
Overview

The town houses the offices of Hwange Town Council, as well as the headquarters of Hwange District Administration. Hwange and the surrounding countryside is a centre for the industry in Zimbabwe. Hwange Colliery is the largest in the country, with proven reserves that are estimated tlo last over 1,000, at current production levels. The Wankie Coal Field, one of the largest in the world, was discovered here in 1895 by the American Scout Frederick Russell Burnham. Today the coal for the whole country is transported by the mining railway to Thomson Junction, where it is handed over to the National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) for onward transmission. In 2010, Botswana, Zimbabwe and Mozambique signed an agreement to develop a railway for the export of coal to Technobanine Point near Maputo.
Hwange is also a tourism centre due to the presence of the nearby Hwange National Park, the largest National Park in Zimbabwe. The national park is home to a vast number of elephant, giraffe, lion and other wildlife. Royal Bank Zimbabwe, a commercial bank, maintains a branch in the town.[4] Zimbabwe's biggest power plant, Hwange Thermal Power Station was built here in the 1980s.

The town is named after the chieftain of Zwange, who is now called Chief Hwange. The town was known as Wankie until 1982.

The current population of the town in not publicly known. According to the 1992 Population Census, the town had a population of 42,581. In 2004, the population of Hwange was estimated at 33,210.[5] The next national population census in Zimbabwe is scheduled from 18 August 2012 through 28 August 2012.
Wankie Coal Mine Disaster
=================
In June 1972, the deadliest mining disaster in Zimbabwean history took place when an underground explosion occurred in Wankie No.2 Colliery. Four hundred and twenty-seven miners lost their lives; three hundred and ninety-one Africans and thirty-six Europeans. Apart from the one hundred and seventy-six Zimbabweans who died, there were ninety-one Zambians, fifty-two from Mozambique, thirty-seven from Malawi, thirty Tanzanians, thirteen from Namibia, and one from Botswana.

First-class cricket has been played in Hwange, at the well established cricket venue located in the town, the Tom Kenton Oval, home of the Hwange (Wankie) cricket club. Earlier called the Wankie Oval. Hwange Colliery F.C. (formerly known as Wankie Colliery F.C.) is a Hwange- based Premier Soccer League club, promoted to division One in 2009.

Khami is a ruined city located 22 kilometres west of Bulawayo, in Zimbabwe.
It was once the capital of the Kingdom of Butua of the Torwa dynasty.
It is now a national monument, and became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986.
Khami was the capital of the Torwa dynasty for about 200 years from around 1450 and appears to have been founded at the time of the disappearance of the state at Great Zimbabwe.
After that (the traditional date is 1683), it was ransacked by Changamire Dombo who led an army of Rozvi rebels from the Mwenemutapa State.
Excavations seem to show that the site was not occupied after these Rozvi took over.
The Rozvi made another Khami phase site, Danamombe (Dhlo-Dhlo), their new capital.
In the 1830s Nguni speaking Ndebele raiders displaced them from Khami and many of the other sites they had established.
The settlement that we see today was a development of the architectural form that emerged at Great Zimbabwe in the 13th century AD and a local Leopard's Kopje culture that built platforms of rough walling on which houses would be constructed.
Khami marks an innovation that recognised the environment in which was built.
The site of Khami reveals seven built-up areas occupied by the royal family with open areas in the valley occupied by the commoners.
The complex comprises circular, sometimes terraced, artificial platforms encased by dry stone walls.
The beautifully decorated 6 metres high by 68 metres long retaining wall of the precipice platform bears a checkerboard design along its entire length.
The platforms, rising 2 to 7 metres above the ground, carried dhaka (clay) huts and courtyards where those of lower status lived.
The remnants of cattle kraals and huts for ordinary people can be seen below the Hill Complex.
The ruins include a royal enclosure or Hill Complex, which had to be on higher ground than other buildings, stone walls and hut platforms, and also a Christian cross believed to have been placed by a contemporary missionary.
There are also ruins on the eastern side of the Khami River.
Other platforms are believed to have been cattle kraals and a retaining wall with a chequered pattern.
Recent excavations (2000–2006) have revealed that the walls of the western parts of the Hill Complex were all decorated in chequer, herringbone, cord, as well as variegated stone blocks.

Victoria Falls is a waterfall in southern Africa on the Zambezi River at the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe.
It has been described by CNN as one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the world.
The two national parks at the falls are relatively small – Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park is 66 square kilometres and Victoria Falls National Park is 23 square kilometres.
However, next to the latter on the southern bank is the Zambezi National Park, extending 40 kilometres west along the river.
Animals can move between the two Zimbabwean parks and can also reach Matetsi Safari Area, Kazuma Pan National Park and Hwange National Park to the south.
On the Zambian side, fences and the outskirts of Livingstone tend to confine most animals to the Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park.
In addition fences put up by lodges in response to crime restrict animal movement.
In 2004 a separate group of police called the Tourism Police was started.
They are commonly seen around the main tourist areas, and can be identified by their uniforms with yellow reflective bibs.
Mopane woodland savannah predominates in the area, with smaller areas of miombo and Rhodesian teak woodland and scrubland savannah.
Riverine forest with palm trees lines the banks and islands above the falls.
The most notable aspect of the area's vegetation though is the rainforest nurtured by the spray from the falls, containing plants rare for the area such as pod mahogany, ebony, ivory palm, wild date palm and a number of creepers and lianas.
Vegetation has suffered in recent droughts, and so have the animals that depend on it, particularly antelope.
The national parks contain abundant wildlife including sizable populations of elephant, buffalo, giraffe, Grant's zebra, and a variety of antelope.
Katanga lions, African leopards and South African cheetahs are only occasionally seen.
Vervet monkeys and baboons are common.
The river above the falls contains large populations of hippopotamus and crocodile.
African bush elephants cross the river in the dry season at particular crossing points.
Klipspringers, honey badgers, lizards and clawless otters can be glimpsed in the gorges, but they are mainly known for 35 species of raptors.
The Taita falcon, black eagle, peregrine falcon and augur buzzard breed there.
Above the falls, herons, fish eagles and numerous kinds of waterfowl are common.
The river is home to 39 species of fish below the falls and 89 species above it.

This is a must see tourist attraction in Zimbabwe. Most people visit the falls between July and August when the weather is dry and less misty.
River Zambezi
The Zambezi (also spelled Zambeze and Zambesi) is the fourth-longest river in Africa, the longest east-flowing river in Africa and the largest flowing into the Indian Ocean from Africa. The area of its basin is 1,390,000 square kilometres (540,000 sq mi), slightly less than half of the Nile's. The 2,574-kilometre long river (1,599 mi) rises in Zambia and flows through eastern Angola, along the eastern border of Namibia and the northern border of Botswana, then along the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe to Mozambique, where it crosses the country to empty into the Indian Ocean.
Chinhoyi Caves
The Chinhoyi Caves (previously the Sinoia Caves) are a group of limestone and dolomite caves in north central Zimbabwe. Since 1955 they are designated as a National Park and managed by the Zimbabwe Parks & Wildlife Management Authority.
Bulawayo city
After Harare, Bulawayo is the second most visited town in Zimbabwe. You may also consider visiting Railway museum around the town to enjoy the view of a passenger coach used in 1904.
