Going to School in India: Uttarakhand
An Indian mother makes her children ready for their school at Beef Village in the hills of Uttarakhand.
The department of education in Uttarakhand is basically a vast structure which incorporates within its fold primary education, secondary education and the state council of educational research and training. Uttarakhand Sabhi Ke Liye Shiksha Parishad has also been put in place to implement education for all in the state which boasts of a very high literacy rate, much higher than the national average. The government has introduced necessary steps to make the children school-bound and also to attract the drop-outs back to their schools.
The Uttarakhand board of schools and examinations functions under the aegis of the Directorate of School Education and provides wide employment opportunities within the state. Uttarakhand contains some of the premier institutes of education in the country, headed by the famous Indian Institute of Technology at Roorkee. To encourage the spread of education at Uttarakhand, the government is ensuring that poor but brilliant students in its rural areas receive free and first rate education at the Rajiv Gandhi Navodaya Vidyalaya residential schools. Mid-day meals and co-curricular activities are some of the ways that have been introduced to popularize education in the state.
Beef is small village located in Rajgarhi Tehsil of Uttarkashi district, Uttarakhand with total 100 families residing. The Beef village has population of 476 of which 230 are males while 246 are females as per Population Census 2011.
In Beef village population of children with age 0-6 is 86 which makes up 18.07 % of total population of village. Average Sex Ratio of Beef village is 1070 which is higher than Uttarakhand state average of 963. Child Sex Ratio for the Beef as per census is 1457, higher than Uttarakhand average of 890.
Beef village has higher literacy rate compared to Uttarakhand. In 2011, literacy rate of Beef village was 80.26 % compared to 78.82 % of Uttarakhand. In Beef Male literacy stands at 92.82 % while female literacy rate was 67.69 %.
As per constitution of India and Panchyati Raaj Act, Beef village is administrated by Sarpanch (Head of Village) who is elected representative of village.

ఉత్తరాఖండ్ (హిందీ:उत्तराखण्ड) ఉత్తర భారతదేశంలోని ఒక రాష్ట్రము. ఇది 2006 వరకు ఉత్తరాంచల్ గా పిలవబడింది. ఉత్తరాఖండ్ 2000 సంవత్సరము నవంబరు 9న భారతదేశంలో 27వ రాష్ట్రంగా ఏర్పడింది. ఇది అంతకు ముందు ఉత్తరప్రదేశ్ రాష్ట్రంలో ఒక భాగము. 1990నుండి కొద్దికాలం శాంతియుతంగా సాగిన ప్రత్యేకరాష్ట్ర ఉద్యమం విజయవంతమై ఉత్తరాఖండ్ రాష్ట్రం ఆవిర్భవించింది. ఉత్తరప్రదేశ్, హిమాచల్ ప్రదేశ్లు ఉత్తరాఖండ్ రాష్ట్రానికి హద్దులు. ఉత్తరాన చైనా (టిబెట్), నేపాల్ దేశాలతో సరిహద్దులున్నాయి. రాష్ట్రం యొక్క తాత్కాలిక రాజధాని డెహ్రాడూన్. ఇదే ఈ రాష్ట్రంలో అతి పెద్ద నగరం. హైకోర్టు మాత్రం నైనిటాల్లో ఉంది. రాష్ట్రానికి నట్టనడుమున ఉన్న గైర్సాయిన్ అనే చిన్న గ్రామాన్ని ముందుముందు రాజధానిగా తీర్చిదిద్దాలనే ప్రతిపాదన ఉంది.
ఉత్తరాఖండ్లో పశ్చిమప్రాంతాన్ని ఘఢ్వాల్ అనీ, తూర్పు ప్రాంతాన్ని కుమావూ అనీ అంటారు. ఉత్తరాఖండ్ ఎంతో అందమైన రాష్ట్రం. ఉత్తర ప్రాంతం హిమాలయ పర్వత సానువుల్లో హిమవాహినులతోనూ, దక్షిణ ప్రాంతం దట్టమైన అడవులతోనూ కనుల పండువుగా ఉంటుంది. ఎన్నో ప్రత్యేకమైన జీవజాలాలు (భరల్, మంచుపులి వంటివి), వృక్ష సంపత్తి ఈ ప్రాంతానికి పరిమితం. భారతదేశానికి జీవనాడులైన గంగా, యమునా నదులు ఉత్తరాఖండ్లోని హిమవాహినులలో పుడుతున్నాయి. తరువాత అవి ఎన్నో ఏరులు, సరసులు, హిమపాతాలతో కలసి మహానదులై మైదానంలో ప్రవేశిస్తున్నాయి.
ఉత్తరాఖండ్ రాష్ట్రానికి పర్యాటకుల వల్ల వచ్చే ఆదాయం ఒక ముఖ్యమైన ఆర్థికవనరు. బ్రిటిష్ కాలం నుండి ముస్సోరీ, ఆల్మోరా, రాణీఖేత్లు వేసవి యాత్రికులకు మంచి ఆకర్షణలుగా అభివృద్ధి చెందాయి. అంతే కాకుండా హరిద్వార్, ఋషీకేశ్, బదరీనాధ్, కేదారనాధ్ వంటి చాలా పుణ్య క్షేత్రాలు వేల సంవత్సరాలుగా భక్తులకు దర్శనీయ స్థానాలుగా పేరుగొన్నాయి. పర్వాటక పరిశ్రమను మరింత అభివృద్ధి చేయడానికి రాష్ట్రప్రభుత్వం కృషి చేస్తున్నది.
ఇంకా వివాదాస్పదమైన తెహ్రీ ఆనకట్ట నిర్మాణం ఈ రాష్ట్రంలో భాగీరధీ-భిలంగనా నదిపై 1953లో ప్రారంభమైంది.
ప్రజలు :
స్థానిక ప్రజలు తమను తాము ఘర్వాలీలు, కుమావొనీలు అని చెప్పుకుంటారు. కుమావొనీలలో కొంతమంది పహాడీ అని చెప్పుకొంటారు. ఎక్కువమంది హిందూ మతస్థులు. ఇంకా గడచిన శతాబ్దంలో వలస వచ్చిన నేపాలీ సంతతి వారున్నారు. జధ్, మర్చా, సౌకా తెగలవారు భారత్-టిబెట్ సరిహద్దులలో నివసిస్తున్నారు. వీరందరినీ కలిపి భోటియాలంటారు. తెరాయి పర్వతప్రాంతాలలో తారు, భుక్షా తెగలవారున్నారు. దక్షిణ తెరాయి ప్రాంతంలో గుజ్జర్లనే సంచార పశుపాలకజాతులవారు న్నారు.
భౌగోళికము :
ఉత్తరాఖండ్ రాష్ట్రము అధికభాగం హిమాలయ పర్వతసానువులలో ఉంది. ఎత్తునుబట్టి వాతావరణమూ, భూస్వరూపమూ మారుతూ ఉంటాయి. ఎత్తయిన ప్రాంతాలలో మంచు కొండలూ, హిమానదాలూ ఉండగా, తక్కువ ఎత్తులున్నచోట ఉష్ణమండల వాతావరణమూ, దట్టమైన అడవులూ ఉన్నాయి. మరీ ఎత్తయిన స్థలాలు మంచుకొండలతోనూ, రాతినేలతోనూ ఉన్నాయి.
3000 - 3500 మీటర్ల ఎత్తున: హిమాలయ గడ్డి మైదానాలు, ఇంకా ఎత్తైన చోట్ల టండ్రా మైదానాలు
2600-3000 మీటర్ల ఎత్తిన: కోనిఫెరస్ అటవీ ప్రాంతాలు
1500-2600 మీటర్ల ఎత్తున: వెడల్పు ఆకుల చెట్లున్న అడవులు
1500 మీటర్ల లోపు ఎత్తున: తెరాయి-దువార్ సవాన్నా మైదానాలు
ఇంకా దిగువన: గంగానదీతీర మైదానాలు, డెసిడ్యువస్ అడవులు - వీటిని భాభర్లు అంటారు.
అక్కడి ప్రత్యేక భౌగోళిక లక్షణాల కారణంగా ఉత్తరాఖండ్ రాష్ట్రంలో చక్కని రాష్ట్రీయ ఉద్యానవనాలున్నాయి.

Gurdwara Nanak Mata is a historical Sikh shrine in a town also named Nanak Mata (often pronounced Matta) in district Udham Singh Nagar, Uttarakhand northern India. Uttarakhand borders Tibet to the north, Nepal to the east, and the states of Himachal Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh in the west and south respectively. The provisional capital of Uttarakhand is Dehradun which is also a rail-head and the largest city in the region.
The town is associated with Guru Nanak Dev and Guru Hargobind. It is situated on the bank of Deoha stream, which has since been dammed into a reservoir named Nanak Sagar. The Gurdwara is located 15 kilometres west of Khatima Railway Station on the Pilibhit-Tanakpur metre-gauge section of North-Eastern Railway. The holy shrine is near the town of Sitarganj.
Gurdwara Sri Nanak Mata Sahib is associated with the first Guru, Guru Nanak Dev ji who went there during his third Udasi in 1514 A.D. At that time, Gurdwara Sri Nanak Mata Sahib was the abode of the devotees of Guru Gorakhnath and it was called Gorakhmata. The yogis who lived there did not want the local people to become learned enough to challenge his superiority. Therefore, by using their occult power, they successfully exploited the poor people and obtain advantage due to their ignorance.
Guru Nanak Dev ji sat near the present location of the Gurdwara meditating under a pipal tree (Sacred fig or Ficus religiosa tree). The yogis were surprised to see him there as this place was quite inaccessible, especially during the winter months. The weather being cold, Bhai Mardana asked the yogis for some fire. However, they refused to help Bhai Mardana. The yogis, instead, taunted him and told him that he should go and ask his Guru who was with him.
A century later, when Bhai Almast came to preach the message of the Gurus in the eastern provinces, he found Nanak Mata again occupied by Nath Yogis. Finding himself unable to evict them, he sent word for help to Guru Hargobind, who was then residing at Darauli Bhai. The Guru at once reached Nanak Mata, chastised the Yogis and revived the Sikh shrine. Bhai Almast made Nanak Mata his principal preaching centre for the rest of his life, and it continued to be served by Udasi priests after his death.
