Heading East to the Midwest (Pt. 25) - Country Roads Took Me to West Virginia
July 3/4, 2015 - These country roads took me home to West Virginia for the first time. Featured are US Route 50 through the Appalachians the Ohio River in Parkersburg to Clarksburg, my hotel room for the night at the Days Inn in Fairmont, and then Interstate 79 heading north to Morgantown the following morning.

SOUNDS OF A DISTANT TORNADO?
Sometime around noon on November 17, 2013 the Midwest region of the United States was barraged by a massive severe weather front. Warm temps, and cool winds merged together to set the stage for a series of Tornado Warnings, and Tornado Watches throughout a large portion of the suburban Chicagoland area. This is a video documentary of just a very small portion of how that storm was witnessed from a safer distance further away from the epicenter of some of the reported tornadoes. Some of these Tornadoes were on the ground causing great destruction, including loss of some lives. As an example of the powerful magnitude of this severe weather event please let me mention some facts, as they were reported via the local weather media sources.
Washington, Illinois confirmed that they had a touchdown of an EF-4 Tornado (capable of winds between 170 mph - 190 mph). This specific Tornado was on the ground for an estimated distance of about 3 miles. Many homes were literally flattened. This is a community, which is located about 110 miles southwest from the location of this video being taken.
Coal City, Illinois was reported to have had a touchdown of an EF-2 Tornado (capable of winds between 111 mph - 135 mph), and is located about 44 miles southwest from where this video was taken.
Another Tornado was reported as being on the ground in Wilmington, Illinois, which is about 40 miles southwest from the location of where this video was taken.
Also in Manhattan, Illinois, another Tornado was reported as touching down as well.
It was reported that there were some sixteen plus (16+) Tornadoes throughout Illinois on this day, and there were also more throughout other Midwestern states as well. There were two EF-4 rated events in Illinois, one being in Washington, Illinois, which was reported to be the location where the most severe damage was witnessed.
This video can only capture a tiny portion of the severity of this event, and the recording didn't come close to capturing the worst of what my area saw. We were much more fortunate than many others were. Distance made this storm much safer for us, than it was for those who dealt with the event head on. I can't imagine how horrid that experience must have been. We witnessed heavy winds, grumbling thunder, heavy rain (some sideways), small sized hail, and some serious howling winds, during some of the worst portions. Listen closely (preferably with headphones on, or a quality sound system), and you will hear some sounds from far off in the distance, and some not so distant, which might be sounds of one of these distant Tornado events.
I've heard many severe thunderstorms before in my life, but this one was very different. The video honestly doesn't do as much justice to the pounding winds in the distance, as did the actual event at the time it was happening. I'm not at all saying this video is as powerful as are many others who were looking this storm in the teeth, but I'm amazed at the strength of this storm from such a long distance away from it's strongest points! Give this video a listen, and let me know if you can hear any extra distant booming within it, such as the SOUNDS OF A DISTANT TORNADO.
As the Chicago Bears fans were preparing to enjoy a home game vs. the Baltimore Ravens within Soldier Field, the game was early on temporarily suspended. Game officials, as well as city officials, and Dept. of Homeland Security officials removed all spectators from the seating areas, in order to secure them deep within the stadium for their own safety. Players were sent to their locker rooms, to sit and wait out the storm until it left the region, and they were safe to return to the game again. The sporting event made for a long day for everyone involved, as the event ended up being a 5 1/2 hour outing. There were zero injuries, or incidents reported from the event. Sadly, the same can not be said for some of the other regions, which were forced to deal with this series of Tornadoes on a much closer basis.
Again, please let me know if any of the sounds heard within this video could possibly be from one of the Tornadoes mentioned, or if they were simply some serious winds within my own region itself. This event was captured on November 17, 2013, and in between 12:00 pm - 12:36 pm. I'm not too sure if the time-frame fits or not, but some of the sounds I was hearing while recording this event live sure did. Enjoy!
