Ambato is a city located in the central Andean valley of Ecuador. Lying on the banks of the Ambato River, the city also sits beneath several tall mountains. It is the capital of the province of Tungurahua, at an elevation of 2,577 meters above sea level. It is variously nicknamed City of Flowers and Fruit, Cradle of the Three Juans, and Garden of Ecuador. Inhabitants of Ambato are called Ambateños, Guaytambos or Patojos. The current mayor of Ambato is Luis Amoroso.   • 2. La Quinta de Juan Leon Mera Ambato
    Botanical Garden Atocha-La Liria is a botanical garden located on Avenue Circunvalación, in Ambato, Tungurahua Province, Ecuador. It consists of 14 hectares and dates from 1849. It was established by Dr. Martinez Vasconez Nicolas, who acquired the properties that make up the Fifth La Liria. It is administered by the Municipality of Ambato, which created the Fifth Atocha and formed the botanical garden Atocha-La Liria. The first eucalyptus trees planted in Ecuador in 1849 when President Gabriel García Moreno came on a visit to meet Dr. Nicolas Martinez, are located in the garden, as is the Martínez-Holguín House Museum. The museum is made of adobe and exhibits the furnishings and artifacts belonging to the La Quinta Mera family.

The 3-kilometre -wide caldera was formed by the collapse of this dacite volcano following a catastrophic VEI-6 eruption about 600 years ago, which produced pyroclastic flows and lahars that reached the Pacific Ocean, and spread an airborne deposit of volcanic ash throughout the northern Andes. This last eruption followed a dormancy period of 14,000 years and is known as the 1280 Plinian eruption. The fourth eruptive phase was phreatomagmatic, indicating that a Crater lake was already present at that time. The caldera has since accumulated a 250 m deep crater lake, which has a greenish color as a result of dissolved minerals.
