Madagascar: Antananarivo, Antsirabe and Ranomafana - how to travel around + Kenya Airways review
How to travel around Madagascar? What do I need to know? How should I prepare? How are the people like? How to get around? How do the cities look like? Many questions running through my head while planning the trip to Madagascar. In my videos about Madagascar I give you an overview about information you need to know before going. For example how to get around - we had a privat driver for €50 a day.We booked with the company GMT+3. You can also use public transport which is really slow. Depending how much time you have public transport is cheaper for sure (some rides cost like 20.000 Ariary)! We almost didn't book any hotel / resort in advance. We just went to the town and looked for accommodation which is really easy if you have your own driver.
I also give you some ideas about the airline Kenya airways, our short stay in Nairobi (Kenya), how much you pay for the hotels in Madagascar, how to book tours (hikes) through the National Park of Ranomafana and much more.
Our route in this video:
-Hamburg to Amsterdam
-Amsterdam to Nairobi (one night in Nairobi)
-Nairobi to Antananarivo
-Antananarivo to Antsirabe (one night in Antsirabe)
-Antsirabe to Ambositra
-Ambositra to Ranomafana (two nights in Ranomafana)
-Ranomafana to Antananarivo (one night in Antananarivo / hotel close to the airport)

Visit Madagascar: Road Sights Driving Around Antananarivo
Madagascar is the world's fourth-largest island and twice the size of Arizona. Adventurous travel to see thousands of animal species, such as lemurs, found only in Madagascar. Madagascar split from India about 88 million years ago, allowing plants and animals on the island to evolve in relative isolation.
Know that Madagascar is the 10th poorest country in the World with a GDP of $1,477. I'll do the math for you -- the average family survives on $4 USD a day. No wonder the streets are clogged with people selling whatever they can… sigh.

A short review about how we travelled:
The easiest way is to travel around by a private driver. We booked a driver with to company GMT+3 and payed about 50 Euros per day. As Madagascar is really big, we also booked a flight with Air Madagascar. But Air Madagascar is first of all really expensive and secondly they cancel their flights quite often. And you won't get a refund. As it is hard to get around, transportation is slow (for example the taxi brusses need a lot of time to get around and even by private car it can take hours) you really need to plan which part of Madagascar you want to visit. We focused on the center and east coast. Our highlights were Île aux Natte, Ranomafana and Andasibe. The people of Madagascar are friendly - that was an amazing experience - but they are also really poor.

Madagascar - how to travel to Madagascar and how to prepare your trip
How to travel Madagascar?
In this video I explain what you need to prepare before traveling to Madagascar. This includes general information about visa on arrival, the currency, what are the highlights of Madagascar and how to get around.
Getting around in Madagascar can be really time consuming so we booked a private driver and one internal flight with Air Madagascar. This helps you to get around faster as you can't really rely on the public transport. For our trip we mainly focus on:
Ranomafana, Andasibe Mantadia national park and Île aux Natte (Nosy Noraha). Of course there are more places to visit like: Antananarivo, Isalo, Nosy Be or Antsiranana.
Your medical preparation must include: malaria prophylaxis, typhoid, hepatites and rabies, polio.

Madagascar: Île aux Nattes, Sainte-Marie and Mahambo. How to travel around?
How to travel around Madagascar?
We got lost on Île aux Nattes which is a little island south of Sainte-Marie. It is so close to Sainte-Marie you could even swim, but the currents make it dangerous. So after staying in Ranomafana we went back to Antananarivo and stayed in a hotel close to the airpot. For 50.000 Ariary we got a little room including a free airport shuttle. We flew with Air Madagascar. The flight was ok! Quite expensive as the flights within Madagascar a really expensive (€250 per person). Air Madagascar can cancel your flights spontaneously. We heard that this could happen for sure. Maybe the give you a refund maybe not. Most of times not. So the company is not really reliable. Better play safe and have some buffer time when you plan your trip around Madagascar. Our flight was going and we flew from Antananarivo to Sainte Marie. Here we took a tuk tuk (5 minutes) to get to the point (south of Sainte-Marie) where small boats are taking you to Île aux Nattes (round about 15 to 20 minutes). For two people we paid 30.000 for the tuk tuk and boat. The island Île aux Nattes is a dream. We stayed there for 5 nights and it was wonderful. The sand is white, the water is crystal clear. The bungalows of the Sambatra Beach Lodge are amazing! One night costs round about 140.000 per person.
Leaving Île aux Nattes was hard (emotionally) but easy to do. You can buy your ferry ticket on Sainte-Marie. Buy the one of El Condor (nice boats) which takes you to Mahambo. If you don't want to, then don't got to Ivongo! But it depends where you are heading next. We heard Ivongo is a place you could (should) skip. The ferry ticket costs 100.000 Ariary per person. For 10.000 Ariary extra you get a bus to Tamatave. Mahambo was nice to relax - nothing much to do here (99.000 Ariary per night - La Pirouge). By the way there is an ATM on Sainte-Marie, so you withdraw money if you need to!
