Places to see in ( Sardinia - Italy ) Arbatax
Places to see in ( Sardinia - Italy ) Arbatax
Arbatax is the largest hamlet of Tortolì, Sardinia, in Italy. With almost 5,000 inhabitants, it is also the third largest town in its province by population, after Lanusei municipality and Tortolì proper. The origin of the name Arbatax is uncertain; according to tradition it derived from the Arabic for 14th Tower and refers, probably, to the nearby watchtower built by the Spaniards to protect the territory from the incursion of Arab pirates.
The founders of Arbatax were Campanian fishermen from the island of Ponza, located in Lazio, close to the coast of the Italian Peninsula. The location assumed importance in the 1960s after the construction of the main Sardinian paper mill.
The town is situated by the Tyrrhenian Sea, 5 km west of Tortolì. The port is used by ferries from Civitavecchia and Olbia and is also monopolized by the marine construction company Intermare, which builds gas rigs and vessels. The marina is one of the cheapest in Sardinia.
The town is connected to Lanusei and Cagliari by a narrow gauge railway, today used for touristic purposes, owned by Ferrovie della Sardegna. The closest airport is the Tortolì Airport, about 4 km from the town. Today, the economy is focused on tourism and industry. Arbatax is home to a factory dedicated to the building of oil platforms, controlled by the Italian oil and gas industry contractor Saipem. Mussels are farmed in the nearby lagoon and fresh fish are on sale from the fishing cooperative. The red rocks are a tourist attraction.

5 Top-Rated Tourist Attractions in Sardinia, Italy
Maybe the only thing you've heard about Sardinia is its fabled Costa Smeralda, Emerald Coast, which takes its name from the color of the water that laps against its white sand beaches. But there is a lot more to the rugged Mediterranean island than this sybaritic jet set paradise. Tourists seeing Sardinia for the first time are surprised to discover that an island so well known for its outstanding beaches can be so rugged and mountainous only a few kilometers from the wave-washed sands. Let's see five tourist attractions in Sardinia, the Mediterranean Sea.
1. Cagliari and Southern Sardinia
2. Nuraghe Su Nuraxi
3. Costa Smeralda
4. Alghero
5. Nuraghe Losa

SARDINIA ISLAND, ITALY, HISTORY & TOURISM
Sardinia is a large island in the Mediterranean to the west of Italy. It is the second-largest island in the Mediterranean Sea after Sicily. Sardinia is one of the most geologically ancient bodies of land in Europe. Its area of 24,100 square kilometers. The coasts of Sardinia are generally high and rocky. It is an autonomous region which currently belongs to Italy. It is located in the Western Mediterranean, to the immediate south of the French island of Corsica.
HISTORY
The island has a long history. In the Bronze Age the island was populated by an enigmatic people who built nuraghi - stone towers - across the island. The importance of these sites is recognised with a UNESCO World Heritage listing.
TRANSPORT
Sardinia has three international airports connected with the principal Italian cities and many European destinations. Ferries connect the island to mainland Italy, and if you prefer not to fly, you could travel by train via Paris to Genoa or Livorno and then catch a ferry. About 40 tourist harbors are located along the Sardinian coasts. The island's towns are connected by trains and buses.
TOURISM
It is one of the most popular summer holiday destinations for beach-loving Italian families. The smartest destination in Sardinia is the Costa Smeralda. Every summer gossip magazines are full of photos of Italian and international 'celebrities' partying, swimming or hanging out on huge yachts in Porto Cervo and the other exclusive resorts of the Costa Smeralda.
MILITARY
Around 65% of all the Italian and NATO military installations in Italy are on Sardinia. The bases, used for manufacturing plants and military testing grounds, totally take up more than 350 km² of the island's land. Sardinia is the most militarized region in Italy and the most militarized island in Europe.
Places to see in ( Sardinia - Italy ) Tortoli
Places to see in ( Sardinia - Italy ) Tortoli
Located on the east coast of Sardinia, Tortoli is a charming town in the midst of a stunning and very rugged coastal landscape. Consisting of beautiful beaches, ample shopping, and comfortable accommodation; Tortoli is also a popular destination for tourists wanting to escape the crowds and get lost in small town Sardinia.
Although the nearby town of Arbatax is better known to tourists, Tortoli is an encounter with a smaller and slightly more authentic experience. There is still an excellent infrastructure within the town, and you will find many shopping options including an extensive variety of vegetables and fruit at the market. Furthermore, the village is situated right next to the mountains in Parco Nazionale del Golfo di Orosei e del Gennargentu and a truly stunning pond – Stagno di Tortoli. Tortoli is very antiquated in appearance, and this is best evidenced in the church of St. Andrew at the very center of town. Consisting of baroque styled facades, this ancient theme continues throughout the village with many beautiful pieces of art ensuring the exterior of these buildings is just as interesting. Featuring San Gemiliano Tower and a nuragic village in San Salvatore Park, there seems to be history and culture at every turn.
As already mentioned, there is also a very enticing range of accommodation which includes the luxurious Orri Hotel and Hotel Antica Posada. In fact, while Tortoli is the kind of travel destination to which customers keep coming back year after year, the luxurious and comfortable nature of these hotels is often the main reason it happens. However, the east coast of Sardinia is renowned for having a rugged appearance and some of the most idyllic stretches in this regard are surrounding the town of Tortoli. Standing tall next to the crystal blue waters of the Mediterranean, the mysterious red cliffs are quite the spectacle.
In many instances, these cliffs are what attract tourists to the region, and they offer an unforgettable sight during sunset and sunrise. And then there are the many beaches dotted along the coastline next to Tortoli. From Cea, Basaura, and Lido di Orri; there are several of these white sandy beaches which never fail to delight tourists, and these are also rather isolated beaches where you can enjoy your small piece of Sardinia in private.
Featuring a tiny airstrip, you can also expect a very secluded experience in the town itself but for a little bit more variety, the above-mentioned town, Arbatax, is just a short distance away. With this in mind, Arbatax is perfect for a day excursion as this will mean taking a ride on the train which travels through stunning scenery between each port. In spite of the small size, it must be noted how Tortoli is an essential hub for Ogliastra – a region in which the tourism and services economy is now even more important than agriculture. For this reason, the tiny airport and harbor still play a very important role
