Places to see in ( Chamonix - France )
Chamonix-Mont-Blanc (usually shortened to Chamonix) is a resort area near the junction of France, Switzerland and Italy. At the base of Mont Blanc, the highest summit in the Alps, it's renowned for its skiing. Year-round, cable cars take visitors up to several nearby peaks with panoramic views, including Aiguille du Midi above town, and Pointe Helbronner, across vast glacier fields on the Italian border.
With the sheer white heights of the Mont Blanc massif as its sensational backdrop, the Chamonix Valley shows the Alps at their most dramatic. First ‘discovered’ as a tourist destination by Brits William Windham and Richard Pococke in 1741, it has become a wintertime playground of epic proportions, more than satisfying the most demanding skiers as well as the après-ski revellers who pack themselves into its boot-stompin’ bars. In summer, lift-accessible highland trails offer thrilling panoramas to hikers, mountain bikers and other high-altitude thrill seekers.
Chamonix is connected to the valley by a highway and a small railway line. It is also connected to Courmayeur in Italy by road via the tunnel under the Mont-Blanc [18], and Martigny in Switzerland by road and rail. In the winter there are TGV lines that go directly to St. Gervais-les-Bains (Le Fayet), where you can switch to a small local train to ride up into Chamonix. There is also a TGV that leaves directly from Charles-de-Gaulle airport to Lyon, and you can transfer to St. Gervais-les-Bains (Le Fayet) from there. Via St. Gervais, sleeper trains to Paris are also easily accessible. Eurolines offers a connection to Chamonix from Italy, Amsterdam, Antwerp, Brussels, Lille, Paris and Geneva. The Chamonix valley can be considered everything between Servoz and the Swiss border, or the towns of: Servoz, Les Houches, Chamonix, Les Praz, Argentiere, and Vallorcine.
Mer de Glace (Sea of Ice), one of the biggest glaciers in continental Europe, accessible by the Montenvers rack railway. Aiguille du Midi cable car, one of the highest cable cars in the world, apart from a few in South America. In fact the Aiguille Du Midi starts at 1035 m and finishes at a staggering 3810 m! From the bottom to the top, it has the greatest vertical range in the world. Brevent cable car, on the other side of the valley, provides the best views of the Mont-Blanc massif.
In Les Houches you can take the Bellevue cable car (Telepherique de Bellevue) for another view of the Chamonix valley, with Mont Blanc to one side and the Brevent to the other. Another option is to take the Montblanc Tramway from St.Gervais Le Fayet that goes upto Nid d'aigle. Musée des cristaux, (crystals museum), a very nice museum, exhibiting an impressive collection of crystals, mostly from Chamonix.
Vallée blanche (White Valley), glacier skiing. Needs a full day from the Aiguille du Midi cable car. The easiest route can be skiied by someone who is confident on red runs, although a guide is highly recommended due to the Glacier on which you would be skiing. Your guide will have ropes, shackles and locator beacons.
The Brevent and la Flegere are the easiest ski areas to get to from the center of town. You can walk to the ski lift at le Brevent, or take a shuttle from a number of different drop of points. Skiing for all levels, but mostly mid- to extreme ski. Les Houches is the best family resort, and often has the best low-altitude conditions. It is the only ski area with slopes below the treeline, so it is a good place to go when there is a lot of fog. Le Tour is at the far end of the valley, towards Martigny. It has many easier slopes for beginners, but also some out-of-bounds skiing if you are willing to hike up with your skis. The front side of Le Tour is also a good place to go if you don't like being cold, because most slopes are in the sun (although it can still be very windy, especially on the back side down towards Vallorcine). The Grand Montets has the most extreme and highest altitude slopes, and can be accessed from the town of Argentiere.

Chamonix-Mont-Blanc, more commonly known as Chamonix (formerly spelled Chamounix), is a commune in the Haute-Savoie département in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region in south-eastern France. It was the site of the first Winter Olympics in 1924. Situated near the massive peaks of the Aiguilles Rouges and most notably the Aiguille du Midi, Chamonix is one of the oldest ski resorts in France and is known as the gateway to the European Cascades. The north side of the summit of Mont Blanc, and therefore the summit itself are part of the village of Chamonix.
The south side was in France, assigned to the commune of Saint-Gervais-les-Bains sharing the summit with its neighbor Chamonix. It is this situation for France, which is found on the French IGN maps. The Chamonix commune is well known and loved by skiers and mountain enthusiasts of all types, and via the cable car lift to the Aiguille du Midi it is possible to access the world-famous off-piste skirun of the Vallée Blanche. With an area of 245 km2 (95 sq mi), Chamonix is the fourth largest commune in mainland France.

Places Featured:
► Meribel. Part of the 3 valleys (des 3 Vallees). In winter the biggest skiing area in the world, and in summer a great starting point for hikes in the surrounding. We hiked to Col de la Lune (which provided us the great views over the mountains) and then on to our hut for the night.
► We stayed in Le Refuge du Christ. A very nice place, in the middle of nature, friendly people and amazing food!! Definitely recommended. Say hi to the hottub from me ;)
► Horse riding through the local forests and to the lake. Just a 2 hour trail, good for beginners. Ask at the local tourism office for information and tours.
► I asked Savoie Mont Blanc if they could make this trip possible for us, and they did.
All opinions are my own, as always.
