Athirappilly Falls the most famous waterfalls of Kerala, Athirappalli and Vazhachal are situated at Athirappilly Thaluk in Thrissur district of Kerala, India on the Chalakudy River , which originates from the upper reaches of the Western Ghats. At the entrance to the Sholayar ranges is the largest waterfall in Kerala, Athirapally, which stands tall at 80 feet. Just a short drive from Athirapally, the Vazhachal waterfall is close to dense green forests that are home to many endangered and endemic species of flora and fauna.
There is another waterfall on the way from Athirappilly to Vazhachal Falls, in close proximity to the road and is locally called “Charpa Falls”. Athirappilly Falls is the largest waterfall in Kerala and is nicknamed The Niagara of India. Controversy about a state-proposed hydroelectric dam on the Chalakudy River above the waterfalls began in the 1990s and has continued through 2011
The 145 kilometres (90 mi) long Chalakudy River, originates in the Anamudi mountains of the Western Ghats and flows through the Vazhachal Forest toward the Arabian Sea. The river initially runs smoothly but becomes more turbulent as it nears Ayyampuzha. At Athirappilly Falls, the water surges around big rocks and cascades down in three separate plumes. Below the falls, the river remains turbulent for about 1 kilometre (0.62 mi) until it reaches Kannamkuzhi. Then it calms and flows smoothly until reaching the dam at Thumburmuzhi.

A major portion of 1986 Tamil movie Punnagai Mannan was shot near the falls, the falls itself playing a role in it. It made the falls so popular in Tamil Nadu that it got the nickname Punnagai Mannan Falls.
The falls were featured in Mani Ratnam's Bollywood film Dil Se.., starring Shahrukh Khan, Manisha Koirala, Preity Zinta ; song : Jiya jale.
The 2007 Bollywood movie Guru used Athirappilly Falls as one of its locations. Rajiv Menon, the cinematographer of the movie, chose Athirappilly Falls as a background for one of its songs Barso Re.
The falls are also famous as a site location for Narumugaye Narumugaye, a song from the Tamil film Iruvar acted by Mohanlal and actress Aishwarya Rai.
This falls is also a major location for songs like Behne deand most scenes in the Hindi film Raavan and Tamil film Raavanan.

Mahagani Thottam is a scenic place nearby Malayattoor. Malayattoor is a village in the North Eastern corner of Ernakulam District in the state of Kerala in South India.

Originally known as Mulankuzhy, Mahogany Thottam, as the name suggests is a forest of huge, black Mahogany trees and tall wild jack trees, including the oldest one that dates back to 1820 (the display board says it approximately weights 25000 kg).Managed by the forest authorities and Vana Samrakshana Samiti,the area where the wilderness and the Periyar merge is a calm spot for travelers, especially for those who love some quiet time.
At the entrance, there is a ticket counter where a fee of Rs.20 per head is collected. Those alone can get a forest official to accompany them along the forest trail. The path is slippery and needs to be tread carefully. The chirping of birds and the cool atmosphere can uplift the spirit. If there is a noise from the nearby bushes, it means something just ran away. The visitors have nothing to fear here. In fact, it is the animals who are afraid of human.
On reaching the forest clearance, the view that awaits visitors is something seen in dreams or movies – the beautiful rock laden Periyar, hanging from the trees, offering visitors a wonderful swinging experience. The huts and benches on the riverside offer a resting spot and visitors can gaze into the glittering river for hours.

Ezhattumugham is a country village in the Ernakulam district of Kerala India.It is situated 11.8 km from the nearest Nedumbassery Airport, Ernakulam, Kerala, India and 40 km from Cochin. You can get there hiring a taxi from the nearest town Angamaly as there is no public transport to the location. The railway station nearest Athirappilly Falls is 30 kilometres (19 mi) to the west in Chalakudi Railway Station, and the nearest airport is Kochi International Airport, about 55 kilometres (34 mi) southwest of the waterfall and 58 kilometres (36 mi) south of City of Thrissur. Athirappilly is easily reachable from Chalakudy and Angamaly by taxi or by bus from the Chalakudy and Angamaly bus terminal. Athirappilly is situated on the highways connecting Tamil Nadu and Kerala, amidst thick forest, so night riding is not advised.
The journey from Chalakudy to the Athirappilly Falls passes through a landscape of winding roads, small villages and lush green trees. Visitors can reach the top of the waterfall via a paved path that leads through thick bamboo clusters. From Angamaly the route is in the midst of an Oil Palm Reserve through Ezhattumugham tourism village A steep narrow path also leads to the bottom of the falls. The falls attract visitors from across India, especially during the monsoon months (June–September). About 7 million tourists visit the falls and the Vazhachal picnic spot each year.

Thumboormuzhi Dam Garden is one of the most famous tourist spots on the bank of Chalakudy River in Thrissur District, Kerala. Every One who visits Athirappally waterfalls happens to travel across this calm and quiet butterfly garden with a small children’s park. Thumboormuzhi dam is a check dam built across the Chalakudy River and water is diverted for irrigation purposes. Here a portion of the water from the river splits into two canals namely Edathukara canal and Valathukara canal that are the backbone of irrigation for the nearby villages. During summers almost whole of the river water will be directed towards the canals making the river bed visible.
Thumboormuzhi is a natural habitat of butterflies. Almost every species of butterfly in the world harbors here. At Thumboormuzhi Butterfly Park, you can enjoy the nature to its fullest with butterflies and flowers conversing with each other. About 148 species of Butterflies can be seen in the park. If you reach early morning you can see bigger butterflies similar to birds. Some of the butterflies that can generally be seen in the garden include lemon butterfly (Papilio demoleus), southern birdwing (Troides minos), common rose (Pachliopta aristolochiae), light blue tiger (Tirumala limniace), dark blue tiger (Tirumala septentrionis). Some of the plants which are grown in the park as feed for butterflies include Pagoda flower, rattlepods, Mexican heather or Hawaiin Heather, Rubiaceae, flame lily or fire lily, Heliotropium keralense (Medicinal Plant) and more.
A restaurant run by District Tourism Promotion Council is present at the Garden where we can manage traditional Kerala food. They also prepare special dishes on request. The other facilities includes a snack bar inside the garden, rest house, washroom etc.
