Phu Lang Pottery Village in Bac Ninh Vietnam
Phu Lang Pottery Village is located in Phu Lang Commune, Que Vo District, Bac Ninh Province, around 60km from the north of Hanoi.
Unlike the ceramic products made from the white clay of Bat Trang (Hanoi), the Phu Lang pottery is made from the light-pink clay taken from the areas of Thong Vat, Cung Khiem. The Phu Lang potteries are covered by the special glazes which are named interestingly such as stone crab, eel’s skin, etc. The ingredients to make the glaze are also unique, including ash trees, slaked lime, crushed pebbles, and alluvial white mud. After the initial processing, these four ingredients are mixed in a certain proportion and then left dry and broken into pieces to add to water.
The next steps are about filtering and processing into the liquid and yellow substance. When the ceramic product is still wet, ceramists will use a brush to coat a thin glaze layer on the cover of the product and leave it dry. Besides creating the unique glaze, Phu Lang Pottery also has the distinct characteristics thanks to the techniques of firewood heating. They use the varied heat generation to create extraordinary traits of the ceramic surface that no other heating technique can do the same. After the steps of glazing and painting with colors, the ceramic products are put into the kiln of 1.000 Celsius degree for the continuous heating of 3 days 3 nights.
The local potteries have three predominant types: (1) products for worshipping (censers); (2) products for household goods (pots, vases, pipe tubes, etc.); and (3) aesthetic fine-art ceramics (jars, pots with the animal patterns like elephants, horses, etc.)
Travel to Phu Lang Village in Bac Ninh to discover how the ceramists produce the masterpieces in traditional ways!

About Ba Chua Kho Temple
Follow National Highway N°1 A to the North direction until Thị Cầu Railway Station (Milestone N°33), turn left and take the road towards the Giasswork Factory; after 500 meters’ distance, you will enter cổ Mễ Village and find Bà Chúa Kho Temple on the side of the Kho Mount, not very far from the main road.
The Temple is connected with a historical event: in 1076, Lý Thường Kiệt1 led the resistance war against the invading Song army. In this period, all this area, cổ Mễ Village, Kho Mount, Gạo Bridge, etc. (around the present Bà Chúa Kho Temple) were the State’s cereal stores on the Southern bank of the Như Nguyệt River (Cầu River), the front line of that war. Kho Mount, Đinh Mount, Thị Cầu occupied strategic positions from where the troops could control the long road from Lạng Sơn to Thăng Long (Hanoi) via the Cầu River.
Cổ Mễ Temple is dedicated to the cult of Bà Chúa Kho, a Vietnamese woman who perfectly organized food production and storage and superintended the State Treasure prior to and after the Như Nguyệt victory in 10762.
Legend has it that Bà Chúa Kho was bom into a family of poor peasants in Quả Cảm Village in the same region. She became a wife of a Lý King. Seeing that her native region had many uncultivated lands, she asked King Ly’s permission to go back to her village to create farms.
Having placed large cereal stores in cổ Mễ by the Cầu River to supply the army with food in the struggle against the Song invaders, the King entrusted her with the task of both superintending the food stores and reclaiming land. Under her good management motivated by the love for her native region, 72 farms in VŨ Ninh and cổ Mễ regions all became prosperous. After each harvest, rice was brought to the stores in cổ Mễ and Thượng Đồng. That is why the mountain in cổ Mễ is called Kho (store) Mount and Thượng Đồng Village is called Lam (large store) Village.
Nobody knows the real name of Bà Chúa Kho. After her death, the villagers built a temple dedicated to her in token of gratitude for her merits in 11th century. Her great services were also recognized by the succeeding feudal dynasties which granted the Temple the title of “Chủ Khô Linh Từ” (Sacred Temple Dedicated to the Great Store-Manager).
The present Temple was built in the architectural style of the 19th century. Its simple structure is designed with a three-stepped stair leading up to the side of Kho mountain. This is a rare commemorative site connected with the Như Nguyệt battle led by General Lý Thường Kiệt.
In Cổ Mễ Village, there are also a communal house and a pagoda. The latter (Cổ Mễ Pagoda) was built long ago with three beautiful statues made in the sculptural style of the Mạc Dynasty (15th- 16th centuries), its present structure with the letter “T”-shaped roof dates back to 19th century.

Mekong Delta river, Often referred to as the 'rice bowl of Asia' due to its plethora of emerald rice paddy fields, the Mekong River Delta is surrounded by fertile lands that showcase nature’s riches. On Vietnam’s mighty Mekong, sleepy floating communities live surrounded by an abundance of tropical fruits, buffalo wallowing in paddy fields, and mangroves rich with birdlife.
Attractions Along the Mekong Delta
The commotion of Ho Chi Minh City is easily forgotten as you float down the mud-brown waters of the delta. Highlights include the Cai Rang Floating Market, the largest of its kind in the area, where boats swell with fresh coconuts and exotic produce, and the UNESCO-listed Can Gio Mangrove Biosphere Reserve, where the river meets the South China Sea.
In the Thua Thua area, the delta transforms into narrow canals that snake past agricultural villages famed for their coconut palms and production of whiskey and wine. Travelers seeking serenity will be delighted by Ben Tre, where a sleepy waterfront and languid pace provide a welcome retreat. The region is also home to two spectacular religious landmarks: Cao Dai Temple and Cai Be Cathedral, whose distinct styles range from vibrant to austere.
