River Shannon boating is fun. But what do you do when things go wrong? #15
We head off for a spin on the river Shannon but soon end up having to drop the anchor. The reason we have to anchor the boat is because we got a warning light showing an engine problem. This isn't a how to anchor a boat video but it shows how we do it!
Then I make a temporary fan belt repair using a pair of ladies nylon tights. The lady in question meanwhile takes the helm and with the temporary repair in place we return to port. Here I do a proper fix and so I fit a new fan belt.
All the time the weather is wet and dull, well at least there isn't a wind up.

Extreme low water, River Shannon, Limerick city
Extreme low water on the River Shannon at Limerick City mid-July 2018. Flows in the river have been just 11 cubic meters per second (cumecs) over the last two weeks ago as the drought continues. The ESB have stopped all generation at Ardnacrusha hydroelectric station - as there is no water left. It is now clear that that the Irish Water proposal to abstract 4 cumecs to supply Dublin is no longer feasible. You could walk across the once-great Curragower Falls today. With climate change we can expect to have droughts like this at a greater frequency in the future - so we have to protect our own local water resources.

Boat Maintenance & fuel filter change before we cross Lough Ree. Episode #16
The boat maintenance to boat fun ratio should always favour the fun! That said there are times when boat maintenance can’t be avoided and you have to just roll up the sleeves and delve into the black hole that is the bilge. And the fuel filter change is one of those important jobs that can't be put off indefinitely.
Your fuel filter is the most likely cause of your diesel engine cutting out. Regular fuel filter changes are an essential part of boat maintenance.
In this episode we do a bit of essential boat maintenance before we set out across a very large lake called Lough Ree. Lough Ree is one of three big lakes on the Shannon system.
It takes our boat just over three hours to travel the full length of the lake and there are very few places that you can run to if the weather changes (which it regularly does in Ireland!) So you can appreciate why I wanted to spend some time checking the engines.
