Amazing Thailand #12: Chiang Mai
Last chapter on the series Amazing Thailand!
Chiang Mai ( เชียงใหม่ ), Lanna sometimes written as Chiengmai or Chiangmai, is the largest and most culturally significant city in northern Thailand, and is the capital of Chiang Mai Province. It is located 700 km (435 mi) north of Bangkok, among the highest mountains in the country. The city is on the Ping river, a major tributary of the Chao Phraya river.
In recent years, Chiang Mai has become an increasingly modern city and attracts approximately 1 million visitors each year. Chiang Mai gained prominence in the political sphere in May 2006, when the Chiang Mai Initiative was concluded here between the ASEAN nations and the +3 countries (China, Japan, and South Korea). Chiang Mai's historic importance derived from its strategic location on the Ping river and major trade routes. The city has long been a major center for hand-crafted goods, umbrellas, jewelry (particularly silver) and woodcarving.
While officially the city (thesaban nakhon) of Chiang Mai only covers most parts of the Mueang Chiang Mai district with a population of 150,000, the urban sprawl of the city now extends into several neighboring districts. This Chiang Mai Metropolitan Area has a population of nearly one million people, more than half the total of Chiang Mai Province.
Some of the touristic attraction in or around Chiang Mai include the Elephant Nature Park, the X-Centre (buggy, zorbing, kart, etc), Adventure Centre (river rafting, quad-bike/ATV), trekking in the forest and hill tribes and the night bazar.

Bang Pa-In Palace Discovered
พระราชวังบางปะอิน
Sixty kilometres north of Bangkok and close to the ancient city of Ayutthaya, is the beautiful Bang Pa-In Palace, built as a summer residence for the Kings of Siam on the banks of the Chao Phraya River. This is a really popular place on the tourist trail with throngs of Thai school children and Chinese tours.... The Palace opens at 8.00am. I was here a 8.00am and had the place to myself, apart from the gardeners, for one and a half hours. Fantastic.
The palace was originally created by King Prasat Thong in 1632.
Following the Burmese raids of 1767, the palace was laid to waste and abandoned for almost 100 years. During the reign of King Rama IV, better known as King Mongkut (1851-1868), a temporary residence was constructed on an outer island close to the former palace complex.
However, the palace we see today dates from from the time of his successor, King Chulalongkorn the Great (1868-1910), one of Thailand's greatest rulers. Construction began in earnest in 1872 and and continued until 1889. . The king also expanded the area to create a magnificent Versailles style garden.
The architecture of the buildingss have a distinct European flavour with the exception of the Phra Thinang Wehart Chamrun, the Royal Residence of the Heavenly Light, the two-storey Chinese-style mansion. My favourite, though, is the Ho Withun Thasana, the 'Sages Lookout', built in 1881 as a lookout tower........

Ayutthaya, Lopburi market, Japanese village and Bang Pa-In Royal Palace.
Ayutthaya is an ancient Thai city with lots of beautiful temples, parks and things to do/to see. It was a former residence of Thai kings with beautiful Bang Pa-In Royal Palace.
