STORYLINE:
A grenade was fired into a mosque on Thursday in Thailand's restive south, wounding about 15 Muslim worshippers, including a 14-year-old boy, before fleeing in a pickup truck, police said.
Police suspected at least five Muslim insurgents were involved in the attack on the mosque in Yala Province's Yaha district, where at least 100 people had gathered for morning prayers.
One of the assailants fired into the building with a grenade launcher, a police spokesperson said.
The district is one of two under a curfew since a series of bloody attacks on both Buddhists and Muslims last month - including execution-style shootings of Buddhist van commuters - triggered fears of open combat between the region's two communities.
The military suspects that Thursday's attackers were Muslims seeking to foment tensions or intimidate fellow Muslims who might cooperate with the government, an army spokesperson said, dismissing suggestions that it could have been a revenge attack by Buddhists.
Authorities could not say why this particular mosque was targeted.
The militants fled in a pickup truck after the attack, police said.
Meanwhile suspected insurgents torched seven schools, a teachers' residence and a government office in Yaha district and neighbouring Bannang Sata district on Wednesday night.
No casualties or injuries were reported.
Thailand's military imposed a curfew in the two districts in March, the first such curfews in the region since January 2004.
A massacre of Buddhist commuters, a mosque bombing and a grenade attack on a tea shop full of Muslims on March 14 left at least ten people dead and more than 20 others wounded in Yaha.
More than two-thousand people have died since January 2004 in Thailand's southern provinces of Yala, Narathiwat and Pattani as a result of the separatist insurgency.
Government measures to quell the violence have failed to make any noticeable headway.
