Vikramshila, Bihar - Buddhist Tourism
Vikramshila, Bihar, Buddhist, Vikramaśīla University, India
Travel Videos HD, World Travel Guide
Vikramshila is an ancient site located 40 km away from the Bhagalpur city of Bihar. The small town is famous for housing Vikramshila University, which was built under the guidance of Dharmapala, a Pala king of 8th century AD. Situated on top of the hills along the banks of river Ganges, the university became a learning center of Tantric Buddhism. Over the years, Vikramshila became one of the most popular Buddhist destinations in India and a major tourist spot in Bihar.
During the ancient period, there was a temple located at the center of Vikramshila University. A life-size copy of the Mahabodhi tree was enshrined in this temple. It is believed that around 108 temples were constructed around it. The study of Guhyasamaja Tantra was carried out in 53 of those temples. Some of the great scholars, including Santipa, Jetari, Ratnavajra, Jnanasrimitra, Naropa and Atisa, have been closely associated with Vikramshila University.
In the present times, Vikramshila stands as a site for the remains of this University, which was built with bricks and decorated with terracotta plaques in the walls of the two-tier circumambulatory paths. Carved pillars, Buddhist images and pictures of Hindu deities have been excavated from this ancient site. The town of Vikramshila is 10 km north of Kahalgaon and 291 km from Patna, the capital city of Bihar.
How To Reach Vikramshila
===========

Vikramaśīla University
=================
Vikramaśīla University was one of the two most important centres of Buddhist learning in India during the Pala dynasty, along with Nālandā University. Vikramaśīla was established by King Dharmapala (783 to 820) in response to a supposed decline in the quality of scholarship at Nālandā. Atisha, the renowned pandita, is sometimes listed as a notable abbot.
Vikramasila (village Antichak, district Bhagalpur, Bihar) is located at about 50 km east of Bhagalpur and about 13 km north-east of Kahalgaon, a railway station on Bhagalpur-Sahebganj section of Eastern Railway. It is approachable through 11 km long motorable road diverting from N.H.80 at Anadipur about 2 km from Kahalgaon.

Mandar hill is a large mountain situated in Banka district under Bhagalpur division of state of Bihar. It is approximately 45 km south of Bhagalpur city. There is, adjacent to this hill, a pond called Paapharni.
As per references found from Puranas and Mahabharata this hill was used for churning the ocean to extract the nectar from its bosom, which is also described as Samudra Manthan.
This awesome isolated, singular boulder hill appears as a gigantic monolith rising at a height of 700’ is aptly connected with a popular mythical tale of immortality in Hindu Puranas.
Mandar hill is a sacred destination to Jains and Hindus both. At the base of the hill a large tank having a Vishnu temple at the centre with a lotus structure is built in the recent past. In the memory of the 12th Jain Tirthankara Vasupujya who attained nirvana here, a temple is built on top of this hill. On the way to the top an astounding lake settled at the niche of the black rock is absolutely startling.
The mythological tale of Hindus describes this hill as Sumeru Parvat, the churning pole of Amrit Manthan (Nectar of Immortality) with the winding ‘Naag’ (the Great Snake). The patterns that are visible on the rock is believed to have created by the mythical Great Snake while the churning took place between the Devs and Asuras.
